Snippet from the article:

Former ‘N Sync star Joey Fatone has undergone hair transplant surgery after experiencing premature balding.

The singer agreed to try out the hair restoration treatment, courtesy of bosses at medical firm Bosley, and he’s been so impressed by the results, he has signed on as the new face of the brand.

He says, “It (the surgery) was pretty intimidating. That’s life, but the beautiful thing is that now you can do something about it.”

What I would want to know is your hair character, its thickness and your donor density, all three are determined at an examination. Once I have that, I can determine what it would take to perform a hair transplant in terms of using up your donor supply which is limited. Your pattern of hair loss is a ‘high’ Class 6 pattern which means to me that the sides may come down as you age. It would be all part of my Master Plan to be able to work with you for the years to come as hair loss is progressive and you might not have yet seen where your hair loss will take you. i tell most men that they should not do a hair transplant until they are at least 25 years old and clearly you are older than that so that your present hair loss pattern is now evident? The key here is to set realiztic expectations with your surgeon.

In the News – The Fountain of Youth in a Pill?

Snippet from the non-hair article:

UCSF researchers have identified an existing medication that restores key elements of the immune system that, when out of balance, lead to a steady decline in immunity and health as people age.

The team found that extremely low doses of the drug lenalidomide can stimulate the body’s immune-cell protein factories, which decrease production during aging, and rebalance the levels of several key cytokines – immune proteins that either attack viruses and bacteria or cause inflammation that leads to an overall decline in health.

The initial study, which was designed to define the dose range of such a therapy in a group of 13 patients, could lead to a daily pill to boost immunity in the elderly, the researchers said. Data will appear in the January issue of the journal Clinical Immunology.

This is all great stuff with the research done at UCSF medical school. Worth a read!

3 Months on Dutasteride (photo)

The patient reported no side effects taking this drug. I suspect that this man would have also responded in a similar manner to finasteride.

IndiaTimes Says Dandruff Causes Hair Loss

Hello Dr,
I found this new article from India Times that says dandruff is a hair loss cause. You said it wasn’t.

IndiaTimes.com

This reads like a brief article with bits of truth and bits of confusion all mixed together. I would doubt that this was written as a means to educate by someone who is an expert. The term trichoanalysis (or as the article calls it, Tricho Analysis) indicates the analyzing of hair (tricho) which is really not informative on any level. Look at one of my recent posts on dandruff for the real scoop — What is Dandruff and Why Do I Have More of It Than My Friends?

Inherited, who do I take after

I feel like my rate of loss isn’t as bad as my grandpas and line’s up better with my uncles. However they lost more overall than my great grandfather, which I attribute to their father’s influence. Neither of them were as bad as his though. I can’t tell if they had crown loss like I do, my uncles seemed to just recede from front to back while I started at the crown and eventually the temples. I believe my grandfather was a diffuse thinner.

Best case scenario is that I take exactly after my great grandfather, his hairline was fairly far back but it looked more or less like a full head of hair, kinda Richard Nixon territory. -but considering he started losing hair about… 100-ish years ago? There’s not many people I can query about regarding the rate it happened. Nor any pictures where I can see his crown.

Today, drugs like finasteride which slow down the loss were not available with your grandfather or other relatives, so you can modify your end balding stage and with a good hair transplant, you can bypass what happened to them. Look at yesterday’s post about a 10 year finasteride study, it shows that men with less severe hair loss, may gain hair with finasteride.

30 y/o female with hair loss, what do I do?

I first started noticing my very fine hair was thinning around 5 years ago. I’ve struggled with depression for a long time so I never did much about it, just accepted my fate I suppose. I should also note that I had a thyroidectomy in 2010 due to thyroid cancer.

My mom has very, very thin hair, there’s not much left on her head. She’s 58. I take this as a sign that my problem is genetic.

Well my hair is to the point that I am embarrassed to show it in public. It’s super obvious. I have thin patches on the back of my head and some on the sides, plus right at my hairline, all up by my crown. I’ve decided to actually do something about it. So I started with Rogaine about a month ago. I saw a dermatologist who said he’s ‘never seen anything like it, its unheard of’ (my hairloss), I really didn’t like his bedside manner and didn’t feel comfortable with him. He said to do Rogaine, Biotin, and a Hairmax laser (which is out of my price range). Is it worth it to get a second opinion? I’m discouraged by my first experience but I would like some answers to the cause of my hairloss.

I wrote this on female hair loss and you should read it will give you a good guide through the doctoring process. https://baldingblog.com/female-patterned-hair-loss-fphl-diagnosis-made-biopsy-no-solution-hair-loss-losing-200-hairsday/ . If your mom lost much of her hair, then you need to consider Scalp Micropigmentation which might work for your mom and maybe even for you if you can’t find a cause for your hair loss (see here: https://scalpmicropigmentation.com/smp-for-women/)
