I Want a FUE Hair Transplant. Is 1200 Grafts Enough? Here is My Photo.

I have been on Finasteride for 4 years and my hair didn’t really change much. I did, however stop the drug for the past two months, but am back on now. 1) could my hair have changed in those two months? 2) what pattern do I appear to be? 3) a reputable IAHRS surgeon consulted me and recommended 1200 graft FUE , what are your opinions on that?

FUE 1200 grafts recommended by one doctor

If you trust your doctor then go with it!
The Internet is not a place to receive a second opinion.
If you would like a second opinion it is best to consult with another doctor in person.

Photo(s) are not a good way to determine if you are balding or if you “need” surgery for the following reasons:

1) There is no way to know your history in detail. This involves a dialogue between a doctor and patient. A consultation usually involves 30 minutes or more.
2) There is no way to examine your hair under a microscope to understand how much miniaturization you may have (to plan for a possible surgery). What will you do if you have further recession or balding after the surgery? Are you prepared to have another surgery to fill in the gaps? You need a Master Plan.
3) Photos do not convey your understanding or expectation of a hair transplant surgery. Someone with your hair loss may be happy with 1200 grafts. Another person with the exact same hair loss may not be happy with 1200 grafts.
4) Photos do not convey your goals. Someone with your hair loss may want a drastically low hair line where 1200 may not be enough. Another person with the exact same hair loss may want a very conservative hair line where 1200 may be too much.
5) FUE or Follicular Unit Extraction is just a harvesting technique. It has nothing to do with the end result. In fact FUE may give you a suboptimal result over a FUT (Strip) surgery. Did your doctor tell you this?

Was My Crown Loss from Eczema?

I am a 28 year old male and I have quite thin hair. Around three years ago someone mentioned it was thinning around the crown. At the time I had quite bad eczema on my head. I assumed this was the source of the problem and have since managed to get it under control with the help of a dermatologists.

However, the hair around my crown does not seem to have grown back. I keep quite a close eye on my crown and I don’t think it has got much worse over the last few years, although it is hard to tell.

Could the hair loss around my crown be due to the eczema? Should I assume it won’t grow back?

I suppose anything is possible, but your guess is as good as mine in this case. It is relatively unusual to just have crown hair loss from eczema. In general, crown hair loss for men is genetic in nature. It’s possible that you have genetic balding in addition to the eczema.

Wearing a Hat After a Hair Transplant

So, I’m getting a hair transplant over in India, which is about a 20-30 hour series of flights, and would like to know if it’s okay to wear a hat afterwards? Like even if it’s just a light bandana, would it be okay for it to touch the grafts lightly for the trip at 6 days post op?

Wearing a hat should be fine. Just make sure that the hat does not rub against the grafts. We give out standard trucker’s hats after the hair transplant procedures we do. You can also double check with your surgeon to find out what he/she recommends.

Has Finasteride Made My Penis Small?!

Hi Doctors,

I am a 23 year old male. I started taking Dr. Reddy’s 5mg Finasteride about a month ago in 1.5 mg doses. I have noticed that it has made my penis decrease in size in it’s flacid state (it’s like right after coming out of cold water), as well as a tightening of the scrotum.

I stopped for about a week and the problem went away. I tried to start taking it again today and the same problems occur.

I have heard of people feeling this tightness in the scrotum, but not the sympton of decrease in penis size. Have you heard of this before? Should I discontinue my use of the finasteride.

I highly doubt a small penis size is a reaction from finasteride or any drug for that matter. If stopping the drug solves the problem, then you made a decision between your penis and your hair. Trade-offs in life are always made. I’d say the penis is more important than the hair, but I really suggest you see a physician in person for an exam if you are concerned.

What are Hims medications?

The website shows it is a prescription service for an entire hairloss kit for a fixed price (the shampaoo, finasteride, minoxidil and biotin). You don’t know if the products are trustworthy. You might be better off buying what you want and not pay the prescription service

Have You Had Any Patients on Finasteride That Had Kids Who Later Presented Health Issues?

Have any of your patients come back to you to report on children they had who were born with or who later presented with health issues that your patients thought might be linked to their use of finasteride? I know there’d be no way to show causality, I’m just wondering if it’s happened.

Personally I don’t care as much about infertility as I do about having a child who has health issues as a result of my finasteride usage. I’m having conscience-pangs just thinking about it. Could finasteride exert some kind of deleterious effect on the genetic content inside sperm whereby the sperm _does_ manage to fertilize the egg but where genetic abnormalities are passed on to the child? As usual, I suppose the answer is that nobody knows for sure.

No. At least, no one ever came to me who was on the medication asking about it. Propecia / finasteride taken by men as directed is not a pregnancy / health risk. When taken by women, it can potentially cause birth abnormalities possibly due to hormonal changes it causes during fetal development.

I know there are plenty of men that have had kids after taking the medication, so perhaps our readers will leave comments about their experiences.

What Can I Do About Poor Hair Growth of My 7 Month Old Son?

I want to ask about the baby’s hair. I had a baby boy, his hair slightly at birth, even in the crown of the region virtually no hair or bald. But I put aloe vera on a regular basis to grow hair on the crown. But overall not too much hair.

My baby boy is now seven months old and has never cut his hair. I want to ask is, whether the baby’s hair will grow thicker if shaved off? And what if the hair was shaved off, whether the hair would grow up to be more violent?

Shaving the head does not make hair grow faster, so do not do that. Also, aloe vera isn’t going to grow his hair.

The hair will change over the next year or so. I would not worry about it, as some babies look bald and some are very hairy. By 18 months, you should see a full head of hair on your son. Baby hair is very fine and will not develop its normal thickness for some years.

Head Swelling

I have had some surgery (face lift and hair transplants) and my face gets swollen from time to time. When it was swollen last, I went to my plastic surgeon who said that he did not see any swelling, but I know it is swollen because my hat is too tight when the swelling is there. Can you help me?

I suspect that you may be seeing a very subtle type of swelling. This is a condition more often seen in the legs or arms, called lymphedema. If it is very subtle and does not produce symptoms, leave it alone. If it is in the legs, then compression stockings may help. For leg swelling, you must worry about heart disease and dependent edema from right sided heart failure. This is not the case with lymphedema of the face or scalp.

Massage works and it feels good. Compression at night with a compression bandage will reduce the scalp component of it. Lymphedema can be a result of surgical or cancer therapy, and irradiation. It can also reflect tumors and metastases of tumors. I have seen patients present with lymphedema of the face and scalp as the first sign of tumors that invade the lymphatics of the neck, where head and neck tumors tend to migrate or even in Hodgkin’s disease (which are a type of lymphoma/cancer). If there are no cancers in consideration (you are not a smoker and have never been one, do not chew tobacco and never done that, have any other symptoms around the face, nose or neck, and no swelling in the nect and it is not bothering you) you might just wait it out. I am slightly concerned because you said you had a face lift and that would imply that you may be over 50, when these types of cancers are more common. Certainly, get yourself cleared by a good doctor because cancers of the head, neck and problems in the lymphatics of the abdomen sometimes present the way you are telling this to me.
