Stopping Minoxidil After Just 3 Months

Hi Dr Rassman
I’ve been taking propecia and minoxidil for about 3 months. Now i feel there is improvement in my hair. I am thinking of quiting minoxidil and use propecia only. Would i maintain my hair if i use propecia only. Thanks.

If the minoxidil gave you any improvement, stopping it would see those benefits disappear. Propecia will not maintain any minoxidil benefits for you (and vice versa). If the improvement you saw was from the Propecia, then stopping the minoxidil will be fine. Unfortunately, since you started both at the same time, the only way you’ll really know which medication was working is by stopping one and hoping you made the right choice.

Finasteride, will I keep more hair staying on it?

People say that Finasteride loses its effectiveness. Is this actually true, since DHT levels are similar till 40? I don’t see the logic of why it would lose its effectiveness.

Studies comparing two groups (1) people who stay on finasteride vs (2) those that do not take it or stop it show that those on finasateride keep hair counts higher for longer. Some further studies by others seem to show that the spread between the two groups continue past 5 years and from my clinical experience I have seen it extend to 20 years. For those that take it and stop it, they shift to the lower curve fairly fast (3+ months) which I have also seen in my practice.

Stress Causing Head to Tingle, So I Scratch It

hi was just wondering whenever i get stressed i start to feel the right side of my head above my ear area get warm and tingly so ive just noticed recently that whenever it happens i tend to scratch/rub that area i ahave very bad thinning now on that side and also my right eyebrow for same reasons will these hairs ever grow back ? thanks

Chronic scratching will produce traction alopecia. What you are describing is a variant of a condition previously discussed on this blog, trichotillomania. It may grow back if the damage is not severe and you stop picking at it. Only time will tell you the answer.

The focus on the drug is to create or enhance collagen production. I was able to find some articles in support of hair growth claims, they are:

Is It Stupid Wearing a Hair System Because It Is Considered Unattractive Projecting My “Insecurity” About My Hair?

Hair systems are a choice. They work well for some men but not for others. The three limitations of the hair systems are (1) the cost is very, very high when calculated over a 5 year period (more than transplants, (2) they cause traction alopecia which is permanent hair loss from the glue and attachments that are used to secure them and (3) for the young man, they can’t allow a woman to run their fingers through their hair.

Follica

Dear Dr.,
I see that Follica Inc. have lincensed a technology developed at Penn university. The research suggests that new hair follicles can be produced in the skin with the protein wtn. Apparently this protein can make lots of new follicles in the skin. If this is the case would it lead to an end of male pattern baldness? Surely, any new follicle made would be affected by DHT. What are your thoughts on this new approach? Many thanks

Yes, I read of them as I was skimming the Scientific American website. It seems the research is relatively new with good potential. There have been many that promised the world, but delivered little. With regard to the ‘new hair’ I really don’t know the answer to your question. Lets keep our fingers crossed!

Suicide and hair loss

Suicide happens in association with balding young men. I have seen it a few times and it is tragic. This should never be taken lightly as anyone who threatens suicide are reaching out for help

17, I regressed from a NW 2 to NW 3 in just a few fucking months. My “peninsula” is just 1 inch wide at best, and I had to have a combover which is extremely uncomfortable for months now. My scalp itches so much, and it fucking radiates pain. It’s seriously taking a major toll on my mental health, I’m starting to hate everyone who has hair, which is like 99.999% of teens my age. I hate it so much, and the worst part it i can’t do anything about it. Minox and fin aren’t available yet, and even if they are they’re too expensive for me to afford consistently for months. feel like shit, i got finals on monday and this thing hindered me from studying for 6 months now. I can’t buzz it cause my head shape looks like shit and no one buzzes it at my age, especially since im in an asian country. I have been having suicidal thoughts the whole time, and my mind has been all over the place i can’t even write this structurally. It sounds stupid but this thing is seriously making me lose spirit in life. I really want to off myself

MY ANSWER: See a good doctor and establish a good relationship with that doctor. An expert physician in this field will work with you and follow balding if and when it occurs to help you keep your hair. I can tell you affirmatively, that I can give a solution to every young man who is balding, so if you are in Southern California, come see me, if not, tell me where you are and I can connect you to a good doctor.

For people with sexual side effects from finasteride, do they go away over time?

In some people who reported initial sexual side effects, these effects went away in a few months. In others, it did not. If it persists, you should consider stopping it because there is a theory that in some of those people those who maintain long term side effects, they may get permanent sexual side effects.

Suture Scarring

I have a couple stretch marks in my back donor area performed years ago from older methods of harvesting graphs.

My new HT doctor has revised these stretch marks by suturing into the subQutaneous. What is your opinion on this?

Thanks,
Tony

I am having difficulty understanding your question. I think you are saying that there are ‘rail road tracks’ where you were stitched years ago. If widely spaced sutures are placed a bit of a distance back from the wound, they tend to produce ‘hash marks’. Today’s suturing with very fine sutures close to the edge of the wound does not produce ‘hash marks’. Is this what your doctor is suggesting?
