My Hair Loss Consultant Was Nicer than My Doctor!

I went to a hair clinic for a consultation to get someone experienced to examine my hair and I have a couple questions, but I’ll give you the story first. I’m in my early twenties and a NW I or somewhere between a I & II at most, so I wasn’t considering surgery (felt guilty “wasting their time” but oh well). I hoped they’d focus on miniaturization/magnification, etc… But unfortunately it wasn’t until the end when I asked them did they actually use magnification. The guy didn’t really take the time to examine me thoroughly and after looking quickly at a few areas said there was possibly miniaturizing near the hairline but everywhere else was consistent and thick. He said my recession was minor and (adult hairlines are 7-8 cm from the brow?) that I had 1-2 cm before I was even at an adult hairline. My questions are:

1) The consultation advisor was very helpful and nice (unlike the M.D. who basically seemed annoyed that he wouldn’t make money from me, which I guess is understandable. The advisor implied that Propecia has little effect on any frontal areas. Is this true? I’m questioning this because he was sincerely advocating the laser comb, which seems ridiculous.

2) My brother gradually thinned and is noticeably thinner on top at in his mid-twenties. If my hairline is changing isn’t that still a form of hair loss? I’m just worried and trying to take preventive measures.

3) How certain/significant are the results of the HairDX gene test? Would you say it is worth the $250 it costs?

Thanks very much for your time taken to read this.

Not all clinics use magnification during a consultation, and it doesn’t make much sense to me that they try to rush you out the door if you’re not a candidate for surgery. It’s a good idea to call ahead and make sure that you will be able to have your scalp mapped during your initial consultation, so that you don’t leave disappointed.

  1. It is unfortunate that your doctor wasn’t caring or gave an annoyed impression. Not all doctors are like that, but I suppose it is better than having your doctor scam you into an unnecessary surgery. Your advisor was right though, Propecia has minimal effects on the frontal hairline other than slowing down the hair loss, but on occasions I have seen some reversal of the hairline in very young men (under 27 years old).
  2. Changing hair characteristics occurs with aging and it is not balding when it occur, but it does occur when a person is balding in its early stage. That is why bonding with a good doctor is a good idea. Think long term.
  3. I think I’ve answered this question before. The existence of miniaturization in the patterned hair loss areas is the best way to diagnosis balding, for if you have it, the test will be positive. If it is not clear and you are concerned about what is going to happen to you, then you need to ask yourself how much you’d pay for peace of mind. Remember, HairDX will tell you if you carry the gene, but not if you will lose hair, to what degree, or when it might occur.

Can Hair Loss Stabilize, or Does All Hair Loss Progress to Complete Baldness in MPB? (From Reddit)

I went to a surgeon for a consultation, and he said the following in an email to me afterwards: “Your Norwood classification is possibly Norwood 3. You may not look like this, but you are showing a similar pattern. Your Norwood classification is not meant to be seen as a progression of hair loss, but rather a genetic predisposition (like the color of your eyes).” Is this true? I thought this entire time that when you start going bald, you always end up going completely bald (at some point). This is an important question to have answered because it will determine if I end up getting transplants or not. Is it actually possible to lose hair up to, say, Norwood 3, and then the hair loss completely stops? Or is this bullshit? I’m currently 26, and the surgeon said to me that, by the time you are in your late twenties, it is relatively easy to predict what classification you fall under by just using the microscope to identify currently thinning hairs, and that most men who ended up completely bald showed clear signs of hair thinning throughout the head in their late twenties.

Yes, many people with a Class 3 pattern of hair loss will retain a Class 3 pattern of hair loss for their entire life. The original classification system was to define the end stage of hair loss patterns, not necessarily transition stages of hair loss, although some people do get transitions from a Class 3 pattern to a more advanced pattern of hair loss.

My hair system shows

Most hair system have the hair combed in such a manner that it hides the base of the hair system. The very expensive ones (I suspect like Donald Trump has) uses a weave with your remaining hair and a lace base that is almost invisible. Speak with your hair system maker and I am sure he can arrange the style to cover the base fabric.

Can I Be Helped Without Having a Hair Transplant?

If my balding is due to one of these: (braiding (dreadlocks), hypothyroidism, iron deficiency, malnutrition, stress, hormone imbalance) can I really be helped without having a hair transplant?

In your case, probably not — but you should correct the medical conditions. You seem to have a lot going on. See a doctor, because an in-person, face-to-face meeting would be miles ahead of internet advice.

My Hairy Butt Is Perfect for Donor Hair!

Hello

I have little donor hair for a transplant, and not much on my body either. Except in my arse, it is very hairy there and when I shave it off it always grows back quickly. Please answer my
question seriously, would it be possible to transplant these hairs onto my head?

Thanks

This is the first time I have ever been asked that question. Yes, it could be done… but I am not sure it would be worth it.

Hair Transplant without finasteride?

I’m 24 year old with stable nw3 hairloss pattern. Is a hair transplant worth it if I cannot tolerate finasteride?
Many men will seek out a hair transplant if they can’t tolerate the drug finasteride. That works if you are not losing a lot of hair and developing an advanced hair loss pattern at the time you want to do a hair transplant. Hair loss patterns can be stable in some men, so a good surgeon will tell you what your situation might become for planning purposes. I certainly do that for all of my hair transplant patients under 30.

Can I Have One Side Transplanted Now, and The Other Side Later?

I work at a job where I really wouldn’t want people to know that I had Transplant. I was wondering if I could have one side done at a time. That way I could comb over it. What do you think?

I have done this with good effect on a number of people. You are correct, if you have enough frontal hair, combing it to the front and side can provide cover for a transplant.

My Stylist Is Helping Me Treat My Hair Loss

Hi,
I’m 22 and starting to bald. My stylist said it’s from High DHT levels. She gave me NIOXIN System 1 and told me not to worry that my scalp is still alive and NIOXIN will take care of it. It’s been a month and I’m still gradually thinning. There’s evidence of it all over my head. especially my sides receeding and my sideburns thinning. She said NIOXIN would help me keep most of my hair.

What should be my next step. Speak with my dermatologist? I don’t really know any hair experts. I have long hair, and it’s a big part of me. I really want to hold on to it. I’d hate to lose it before I’m 24. Is my baldness inevitable? Or is it really possible to catch it early and take care of it with the NIOXIN S1 treatment? I’d be thankful just to hold on to what I have now. Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks for your time

Well, of course your scalp is alive. Unless you have gangrene all over your head, I think that would be a given. Your hair stylist isn’t necessarily going to be an expert in treating hair loss, but I’m sure she’s an expert in selling products that are available in the salon. The Nioxin won’t solve your hair loss problems, and I’ve found that medication such as Propecia and/or Rogaine are the best bets. You can discuss a Propecia prescription with your dermatologist, and Rogaine is available over the counter.

I don’t know if your balding is inevitable since I haven’t seen you. I’ve found much success in treating patients with Propecia, and even if you don’t see regrowth with that daily pill, it’ll at least hold onto the hair you have. If you want to try to make your own diagnosis, look to Mapping Your Own Scalp for Miniaturization.

Can I Shave My Head Bald After FUE?

Well I am black male and currently shave bald. I want to continue to shave bald. I am thinking of FUE to give me some hair in a thinning area. I have few questions: What does the donor area look like when you shave bald after FUE, does it show scarring? I mean razor bald like MJ. Is it worth doing?

I’m confused as to why you’d want a hair transplant only to shave your head bald. All wounds to the scalp will cause some scarring. With FUE, the scars are tiny dots, instead of a straight line scar like that of the strip transplant and they may have a white color to it that would show up after healing an FUE donor area. With dark skin, that might be a problem and one way to tell that is to have a test FUE session done of just 2-4 grafts and assess the healing at 3 months. These tiny scars allow you to keep your hair very short without noticeable scarring if the whitish scar does not appear, but that being said, completely shaving your head may make these scars visible. Again, a test is worth a try.
