Is thinning hair always miniaturized?

Does miniaturized hair gradually grow shorter with each cycle or can a miniaturized hair be long, say 5-6 inches then fall and stop growing?

At the start of the year my hair was thick but after a stressful couple of months, all my hair turned super thin with bald patches. The hair turned so thin it has very wide partings. Also all my body hair thinned too. Beard, arms, legs and pubic area. It’s like every hair on my body miniaturized. I can see my scalp now with wet hair. It all happened quickly, this wasn’t a gradual thing. The hair texture feels weird. My beard hair has thinned the same. I had thick hair on arms and legs now it’s all very fine. My pubes are now thin and wispy. I started taking fin a few months ago. I was prescribed it for prostate. Will this help? I can’t find anything about this when searching the net, only TE but does hair thin during that? At the start of the year I was very stressed, hardly eating or sleeping for a couple of months which I”m sure caused this.

Let’s imagine a hair that grows out for two years and is 12 inches long. If miniaturized started into the second year, the hair closest to the scalp would be thinning then the hair at the end which was made 2 years earlier. So a miniaturized hair can be seen simply by pulling out a long hair and looking at both ends. Another aspect of these miniaturized hairs is that they will grow slower and slower over time, eventually they stop growing and just stay there, falling out with washing, brushing and just the wind.

There is another condition that I just recently defined in the literature called Age Related Thinning. In this situation, all of the scalp hairs become thinner all at once and it is uniform thinning throughout the scalp. Although this is more common in men and women over 50, it does appear in younger men and women. I have seen it in men in their 20s and they make the mistake to think that this is balding because they can see through the hair to the scalp. There is no known treatment for this and neither minoxidil nor finasteride can reverse this as I know it. This is my article about it: https://newhair.com/pdf/Kumaresan-Muthuvel-Bernstein-Rassman-Commentary.pdf

tell me about body hair transplants, how good are they?

It is more than possible as many people have this done. The problem is the growth cycle of body hair which is about 6 months and the telogen cycle is 6 months. That means that if you are transplanting 100 hairs, only 50 will be growing at any one time. Because of the short hair cycle, the length is limited as well as the character which comes with the body hair texture. This, in combination, makes for considerable expense when doing these, you are only getting half of what a scalp or beard donor hair transplant would give you.

How do you tell the difference between recession and a mature hairline?

This man sent me an email asking this question:

How do you tell the difference between recession and mature hairline?

I asked him to send me a photo of his hairline with his eyebrows lifted high so that the creases show on his forehead. A mature hairline can be seen here because the hairline is about 1/2 inch above the highest crease of the furrowed brow. The shape of a mature hairline is V-shaped which is a typical male hairline shape. If you are concerned about a receding hairline, always do this test.

mature hairline

How do you tell the difference between a receding hairline and a maturing hairline?

Almost all Caucasian males develop a maturing hairline. When recession occurs, it usually is associated with hair loss elsewhere on the head and scalp and that is why I perform a HAIRCHECK if I have any doubts on the distinction between a receded hairline and the appearance of a maturing male hairline. The HAIRCHECK instrument will show hair loss behind the hairline which always occurs when the hairline is receding. The picture of me below shows a V Shaped mature hairline that is 100% mine since it changed from the rounded hairline of my youth. This hairline was not transplant but my entire crown was transplanted with 2700 grafts. The second picture shows early hairline recession that was transplanted along with a replacement of the temple peaks. You can see that this hairline was ‘ratty’ in appearance which is essentially what often happens when the hairline starts eroding.

How do I tell the difference between Nutrafol and minoxidil products for my thinning hair

These are neutraceutical products which have general claims like hair health but minoxidil has science behind it to show it really can grow hair. You can’t draw any science from some claims from Nutrofol; however, the photos (if they can be believed when produced by the company and not peer reviewed medical journals, can be impressive but not always believed).

Tegretol and Hair Loss?

Dr Rassman
My doctor is talking to me about putting me on Tegretol for anxiety. I asked him if this med causes hair loss and he told me he does not no any one had this from Tegratol but i think i read that it does. Can you tell me if you saw any people that came into you office that while taking this drug had any hair loss from it.
Thanks

I have no memory of treating anyone that lost hair as a result of taking Tegretol (also known as carbamazepine, a seizure medication), but I’ve read claims online that it could be a rare side effect. It isn’t officially known as a side effect, however.

Teenager’s Eyebrow Never Grew Back After Shaving It 3 Years Ago

(male) I shaved a good bit of my eyebrow when I was twelve – I’m, fifteen now. In short, they never quite grew back right. Will rogaine work? If not, what can I do?

I don’t think that giving a 15 year old advice on medication should come from me. Assuming that you were of legal age to make such decisions on your own, minoxidil might grow back eyebrows… and then again it may not. See a doctor and have your problem managed. You should also get a parent/guardian involved in your situation.

Teenage Female with Thinning Hair

Hi I am 17 years old. I’m going to be 18 in 2 months. I used to have very thick, long, black and beautiful hair. Over time it started thinning. I dont know why. Is it that Im not eating enough vitamins? Or that I dyed my hair? I’ve dyed it about 5 times my whole life. I also blow dry and straighten my hair. Is that bad for my hair? I really want my long thick hair back. Will it grow back? What can I do? Is there anything I can take to make it grow faster?

You need a proper examination of the scalp looking for miniaturization. First you must rule out that you are not early in the female genetic hair loss course. Then, if positive, you need to have your overall health checked out, looking for a variety of hormonal issues and diseases that can cause hair loss. If you do not have miniaturization or other causes of hair loss and hair thinning, then you may be having changes into a new adult hair type. Some people as they mature from teens to adults, will change their hair character. Sounds like you need a good doctor to point you in the correct direction.

Teen Using Procerin to Try to Regrow Hairline

Hello, I am now 17 and I’ve noticed my hair loss (or receding hairline) about a year ago. The strands of hair around my hairline are uneven with the rest of my head and I knew it’s not gonna last long.

I’ve tried Procerin for the past 3 weeks now (since it seemed like the “safest” way for treating it) but I still shed the same amount of hair than before I started taking it. So much for that.

Then I started to read about stem cell treatments that might come in the next few years, and it sounds promising. Do you think I should wait until cell injection treatments are available? Or am I just fooling myself and should I go with treatments like Rogaine?

ProcerinAt 17 years old, I wouldn’t be surprised if what you’re seeing is a maturing hairline. Have you seen a doctor or are you just treating yourself with over the counter supplements? You might not be experiencing male pattern hair loss, but rather, the maturation of your hairline (a totally normal part of getting older when your hairline goes from juvenile to mature). For more on that, see here.

Procerin is essentially saw palmetto (an herbal that hasn’t been scientifically proven to stop hair loss, though many people on the internet swear by it) with a fancy label and some added vitamins. You can learn more about Procerin here. You’ve only used it for a few weeks, but I wouldn’t expect it to do much for your hairline regardless of how long you used it. Rogaine is proven to regrow hair, but I wouldn’t expect much in the hairline from that either (works best in the crown).

Future treatments are just that — future. There’s no timetable for them to actually make it to market. We’ve been hearing hair cloning would be popular by now, yet it is still in the early stages of trials. We’ve been hearing the cure would be available by now, yet there is no such magical elixir, pill, or lotion available. It’s up to you to decide how long you want to wait for something to maybe become available.
