SMP and Scarring Alopecia

I have lost alot of the hair on the sides of my head due to a form of scarring alopecia. Would it be possible to have micropigmentation done just on the sides as haircuts that are buzzed on the sides and a bit lengthy on top are very common and in style?

Generally, scarring alopecia with balding from it does well with Scalp MicroPigmentation (SMP). We have done a few severe cases which I could show you if you visited my office. One particular patient who had very extensive scarring and balding would rather not have his photos online.

SMP and Future Hair Cloning?

Hi,
I read about Scalp MicroPigmentation (SMP) and I think this might be a good choice for me, because I am not candidates for hair transplant surgery. However, I am waiting for the day that the hair cloning technology can be used by people like me. My question is: Is SMP a barrier for future hair cloning?

Thanks

When properly designed, Scalp MicroPigmentation (SMP) can work with hair transplants and possibly with a good cloning process once cloning is practical. Hair cloning is “not ready for prime time”, but I expect that once it is viable, any good cloning procedure must restore a normal appearance, including the leading edge of the hairline which is critical to a normal look.

This process is often ignored by tattoo people who do SMP type of work, partly because the patient pushes a hairline design that may not be normal, or the tattoo person does not appreciate the blend between the natural balding process, the maturing hairline, and what they should look like.

The influence of someone like Dr. Pak (who designs all of our SMP work) is critical to the excellent results we obtain. I would imagine that the same conditions would apply to the cloning process.

Smoking In Young Men Causes Change in Y Chromosome And Lung Cancer

The relationship between young men who smoke show changes in the Y Chromosome suggesting a causal relationship between the appearance of earlier lung cancer in young men than comparable men of the same age. Lung cancer has been known to have a higher in men than women, so this relationship is important. The changes can be measured in the red blood cells of smoking men. This article was published in the prestigious journal Science.

Smoking, Hair Loss and Attractiveness

Hello, I am smoker of 24 years here. I am 37, and I have quit smoking for one month now. I have noticed that my hair is falling out far less and it is thicker and shiny. My skin is full of color as well. When I go out now, lots of ladies check me out and approach me even though I have a receding hair line. The ladies never approached me when I was smoking, probably because having a fag hanging out of your mouth isn’t very becoming. Anyways, smoking is a waste of time and money, and we don’t have a lot of either these days. Quit smoking and free yourself! Be your best self!

Good for you. You will also probably live longer and better.

Smoking, Drinking, and Hair Loss

I was wondering since alota aussies smoke cigerettes, drink and love to party, if it cuases any premature hairloss from excessive binge drinking and chain smoking.

I am not familiar with a proven connection between smoking, drinking alcohol, and hair loss. Your definition of “party” may include drugs, in which case hair loss could be a problem, though I hope this is not the case. Please note a previous post, Does Drinking Alcohol Contribute to Hair Loss?

Smoking Cigarettes and Hair Loss

Does smoking cause hair loss, will smoking affect the success of a transplant? Best Regards.

There are known effects on blood supply to the scalp and other areas of the body when one smokes. This may or may not contribute to hair loss. Many hair transplant surgeons warn patients that if they smoke, they run the risk of losing hair from a transplant or reducing the yield from a transplant. I have not found that to be the case, but from a good legal position, I must warn you of that possibility.

Smoking Cannabis After Hair Transplant

First off let me say I find your answers to be very informative.

My first question is: Will cannibus affect my hair transplant I had on Feb 08/06? I don’t smoke cigarettes but cannibus helps me deal with my occasional back pain.

Secondly when can I resume my normal jogging of a couple miles in the morning? As well as doing chin ups and push ups? I have been told exercise of these sorts will only expand the the donor scar.

Thank you and i appreciate your advice.

Medically speaking, smoking cigarettes (even the cannabis / marijuana kind) promotes poor wound healing by decreasing blood circulation. It may have an impact on your hair transplant, however, I do not know how much of an impact it will have.

Exercises such as sit-ups that may have a potential to stretch the back of your scalp will also have an impact on your donor scar. Running 1 week after surgery is not a problem. Although you can probably resume most of your regular activity after one or two weeks post surgery, the scar takes about 6 months to a year to completely set and in the first 3-6 weeks, the wound structural elements that make for good solid healing change and build. I generally tell my patients not to do the type of exercises that stress the neck muscles like body press or sit-ups for up to 6 weeks. A few of my patients even ran marathons a few weeks after surgery without any negative effects.

Smokers may have more or earlier hair loss

https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jocd.13727

Results

The majority of smokers (425) had a form of AGA, while only (200) nonsmokers had a degree of AGA (P < .01). Of the smokers group, 235 (47%) had grade III AGA and 120 subjects (24%) had grade IV AGA. In the nonsmokers group, 100 subjects (20%) had grade II AGA and 50 subjects (10%) had either grade III or IV AGA.

Conclusion

The prevalence of AGA among smokers was statistically higher than among nonsmokers, while severity of AGA was not associated with the intensity of smoking. Nicotine and its derivative cotinine might be responsible for accelerating AGA progress pending further validation.

Dr. Rassman’s Comments: This is a fascinating study strongly suggesting that smoking (possibly nicotine) accelerates male pattern balding, in those who I suspect in those who have a genetic predisposition for it.

Smokers May Harm Their Sperm And Impact Babies Health

The New York Times “reported a study published in BJU International found that the sperm of male smokers was “damaged in ways that could reduce the chance of fertilization and might also lead to health problems in the baby.” The researchers found that the “DNA in smokers’ sperm was fragmented, probably because of oxidative stress from the cadmium and nicotine in cigarette smoke,” which has been associated with increased risk of genetic problems and childhood cancer. They also found nonintact acrosomes and changes in seminal plasma, both of which “might impair fertilization.”

Smelly Hair

i have hair but it smells awful i wash it daily but the smell goes away for only a few minutes, anyway it keeps me from doin stuff like datin hangin out, simple things.

You might want to get a doctor to examine you to understand the problem. I can imagine many conditions that may contribute to this, but a good examination is the best approach if you wash it thoroughly. I might wash it in my office, and then observe what good washing can do versus what you are doing; maybe there is a difference just on that level. Our office has good washing facilities for our patient hair washes which we do after all surgeries.
