Side Effects Only After Quitting Propecia?

Is it possible to not have any side effects while taking Propoecia, but then expriencing them after quitting?

Propecia (finasteride 1mg) stays in your blood stream only for one day, which is why you need to take it daily. You weren’t clear as to what side effects you are experiencing after stopping Propecia. I would need more information from you to know where you are taking me.

Side effects from oral minoxidil

What do the side effects generally feel like, for lack if a better word. ive been monitoring my blood pressure daily, and ive been keeping an eye on my heart rate as habit for a while now. Both have been consistent and continue to be consistent 3 days into oral minox, but i cant shake the feeling that somethings a bit off. Ive been experiencing mild chest discomfort for months since starting adhd treatment, but having had a full check up done on my cardiovascular health (ekg, bloods, xray), everything was fine. This discomfort feels more pronounced with oral minoxidil, but I cant tell if its in my head or not. It will go away and come back occasionally, and i can exercise for a while feeling fine until i start getting worried about it and then it becomes noticeable.

could it be a result of heavy weight lifting? I lift regularly, but i feel like the discomfort should be uniform across my chest then right? When i press the cartilage near my breastbone, there is pain on the left side, as well as when i press the area of my left pec near my collarbone.

You need to have a serious discussion with your doctor

Very Sick and on Losartan – Losing My Hair

In September, I had a virus that closed my throat, or at least that’s what they thought happened. I was intubated for 22 days and was in the hospital for 30 days. I was prescribed blood pressure medications: Amlodipine (10 mg) and Losartan Potassium (50mg). I always had really thick curly hair, but about 3 weeks after I got home, I noticed a lot of hair on my pillow and in the shower. Now, I can’t even put my hair in a ponytail; what’s left of it is straight and stragglers. My doctor said that hair loss isn’t a side effect, but I have read hundreds of the same stories. She told me that any kind of trauma will cause temporary hair loss and she won’t change my meds. Instead, she wants me to go to a dermatologist. My insurance sucks and I don’t really have the money to pay for a specialist. Anyone know if this is true or of any BP meds that don’t cause this?

Between your protracted and traumatic illness and the various medications you were on, it is impossible to point to any single cause of your hair loss. Although Losartan is known to have rare hair loss side effects, I think that the long-term stress you went through is as much a cause of your hair loss than any single medication. By the end of a year, you might see improvement. Good luck.

Is the Shrinking of the Prostate a Serious Concern? I’ve Been Taking Finasteride for Almost Ten Years, Should I Be Worried About Prostate Damage?

No, shrinking of the prostate is not a problem. As men get older, the prostate gland often becomes larger, and when this happens, they often “pee” more, especially at night. Shrinkage of the prostate reduces these symptoms.

Show me transplanted Class 7 patients (photos)

Let me address your probe my way. Here is a Class 7 patient who had 11,000 grafts (about 26,000 hairs) in an area that would normally, in a normal person contain 37,000 natural hair follicular units or (possibly 78,000 hairs). It should be clear from the observers, that this man looks like he has a full head of hair, but 75% of his head is transplanted as he and even his father, had a Class 7 pattern of balding: as well as here: https://baldingblog.com/difference-between-norwood-class-7-patients-with-photos/ (the first patient is the father of the previous patient shown here and the second patient had a very fine hair and if you don’t know, fine hair is poor for covering a full Class 7 pattern).

Show Me Evidence that Masturbation and Hair Loss Aren’t Linked!

You seem pretty sure that no amount of ejaculation can contribute to hair loss. Where is your evidence?

I’m merely saying this because I know for a fact that my bald spot is a direct result of my excessive masturbation. Seeing that I’m only 19 and that the hair loss completely stopped after I stopped masturbating I’d say I have plenty of evidence at least for myself.

Testosterone is converted to DHT through frequent ejaculations…therefore masturbation does in fact contribute to baldness. I’m only 19 and after two years of masturbating 5-7 times a day I already have a huge bald spot on my head so don’t give me any bulls..t and don’t contribute to the suffering of others just because you don’t want your precious masturbation to be seen for what it really is -A dangerous addiction.

In addition masturbating does not relieve sexual urges, it merely feeds them. I haven’t masturbated or had sex for 5 months now and I don’t miss it.

You are a pitiful human being and I hope that one day you realize how big of a mistake you are making right now. You are being extremely selfish and you will have to answer for your actions just like the rest of us.

What can I say? Sexual addictions are addictions. I can not prove a connection between masturbation and hair loss… I just know it in my gut. There is no doubt that people who take high doses of testosterone can become overly sexually obsessed. That is how our biology works. You are correct, testosterone does cause hair loss largely when it is converted to DHT. I would have to do a study isolating hundreds of men who have the balding gene, then get accurate information about the frequency of their masturbation and separate the groups so that the balding would be considered. Then it would have to be statistically significant according to a statistician. I don’t know of anyone willing or driven to do this study scientifically. As this is your focused question, why not resolve the issue with your own study and report it back to me? I will post it if it is a serious study.

I gather from your email that you are also angry and have focused that anger on me. Excess testosterone has been known to cause aggressive behavior in some men. You may have a hormonal problem or an addictive one. In any event, your anger is misplaced. I do wish you well.

Shouldn’t I Try Propecia and Rogaine At the Same Time?

Dear Dr. Rassman,

I found this blog a very interesting read, and I appreciate you taking the time to answer questions online like this. It has been a wonderful resource in coming to terms with the somewhat shocking discovery of my hair loss.

I am about to start treatment with propecia for my thinning top, but there’s something that has been nagging me:

I want to heed this blog’s earlier recommendation and wait until after a year on propecia before trying Rogaine. But isn’t it “the earlier, the better” even with propecia working in the background? Wouldn’t this delay risk my potential for improvement? Wouldn’t it risk killing miniaturized or dormant hair?

It is my hope to completely eliminate the visible thinning with medical treatment. I realise my odds aren’t super great, but I also feel it wouldn’t take much improvement to achieve this. My hairline has receded to mature levels but seems stable. I will be 25 this year and I only noticed my thinning a month ago.

Propecia
Rogaine

Generally, when I recommend a medical treatment for androgenic alopecia (AGA), I only have two proven medications I can recommend: (1) Rogaine (topical minoxidil), and (2) Propecia (oral finasteride 1mg). While you can start taking both treatments at once, it would be difficult to assess which medication had more or no benefit. So I usually give the patient a choice on one medication and they use it for 6 to 12 months to assess how it is helping their hair loss issue before we add on the second medication.

Also, in practical (real world) terms, it is a hassle for men who are not used to taking any medication to stick with the regimen of taking a pill every day (Propecia) and putting on a topical medication twice a day (Rogaine). Before they know it, most patients get lazy, forget to take the medication, or forget to resupply the medication when they run out. I find that in a good percentage of time, the failure of a medication is related to the poor compliance issue. This not only applies to Propecia, but many other medications.

So yes, while starting both at the same time allows you to potentially see your maximum benefits begin sooner, it’s a lot for most men to keep up with every day. And who knows — since you just noticed your thinning, only one of the meds might be all you need.

Shouldn’t I Take Propecia Twice a Day?

Dr. Rassman,

Why is it not necessary to take propecia more often than once a day??? If I take 1mg at 6am, then 12 hours later, I only have 0.125mg in my bloodstream which has to last me another 12 hours. Since 0.125mg doesn’t block hair loss—aren’t I losing hair for the second half of the day??????

The studies done by the drug company for the FDA showed that the value of the 1mg daily dose was as good as twice the dose. The goal was hair counts, and the benefit on hair count was the same for 1mg as it was for 2mg.

Shoulder and Back Pain from Propecia?

Hi doctor , i have been taking propecia almost 8 months . I am 28 years old and do not have thinning anywehere but some receeding from the front sides. I was taking to slow down my receeding. Two weeks ago i decided to take two pill per day and i took it 5 days like that. And when i didnt see any difference i stop taking two pills and went back to one pill. Just two days after i went back to one pill .I started to realize that i have a pain on my upper back and shoulders and my shoulders started to move forward like a body builder. I stop taking propecia one week ago to see if it cleans whatever damage i had . Is it possible that something like this can happen in a short time. Now i have shoulder pain and upper back pain time to time during the day. Is the hormones has something to do with it.Thanks.

I have never heard about Propecia causing shoulder, back, and joint pain. I do not believe that blocking the conversion of testosterone to DHT will cause these muscular and joint problems. Have you been carrying some heavy loads or started new exercises which could cause your shoulder or back pain? Look for other causes for the problem, but get to see your doctor and do not treat yourself.

Should you take daily Aspirin to prevent a heart attack?

As a results of three trials, the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology (AHA/ACC) issued updated aspirin recommendations in March. They advise against routine aspirin use in people older than 70 years and those with increased bleeding risk. Routine aspirin may be considered in adults 40 to 70 years of age at high risk for CV disease with no increased bleeding risk, they state. “People may think that because it’s over the counter and it’s been called ‘the wonder drug’ for 30 years it must be pretty safe,” Susan Smyth, MD, PhD, told theheart.org | Medscape Cardiology. “Now we have to work to get the word out to talk to your doctor first before starting aspirin,” said Smyth, Gill Heart and Vascular Institute, University of Kentucky, Lexington, who is not associated with the current analysis. “As physicians, we are reasonably good at implementing guideline-directed medical therapy when we know something works. What we don’t do a very good job at is de-implementing when we learn that it maybe doesn’t work so well. De-implementation is much harder,” she said. However, she said, it’s equally important to remember that for patients at high risk and those with known coronary disease, aspirin remains a key component of lowering the risk of having a first or second heart attack or stroke.
