No, I don’t recommend DHT testing. Finasteride is a competitive inhibitor to DHT at the 5 alpha reductase level. Simply put: competitive inhibition means that finasteride competes with DHT for the receptor that triggers hair loss. If the finasteride occupies the receptor, than DHT can’t cause the hair loss. Finasteride is about 75% effective at competitive inhibition.
Should my boyfriend go back on fin? Will he get sexual sides if he didn’t get them before?
Posting for my ‘off-the-grid’ boyfriend. He took fin in his mid twenties. It worked great, and he had no sexual sides. He stopped cause he was afraid of cancer. Now that the 2018 follow up study came out, he’s thinking about going back on. Do you think he has less risk of developing sexual sides cause he didn’t before? If he goes on it and has sides, will they disappear when he goes off? Should he go on it?

Should I worry about PFS if I have no side effects for 3 years
I’ve been taking finasteride for 3 years without any side effects but started reading about post finasteride syndrome (PFS). Is It real? Should i worry about It?
If you are not having side effects of a sexual nature, there is nothing to worry about.

Should I Wipe The Scalp Oil Off My Balding Areas?
Dear Dr Rassman
Hi, Great blog this! I have noticed that the balding areas of the crown and front are very oily/ greasy. If I take a tissue and gently wipe it, the tissue comes off with grease. Could this be blocking the hair follicles and thereby increasing hair loss? I play sports actively so I wash my head twice a day.
Would you suggest wiping the greasy areas with a tissue during the day if it helps the hair in any way?
Thanks.
Greasy areas on your scalp have nothing to do with hair loss. If you want to wipe the grease off or use any products, go ahead, but it will not affect your hair. I don’t have any particular suggestions. Your hair will fall out no matter what you do over time, because you likely have genetic balding. If you are concerned about hair loss, you should see a doctor to see if medication may be an option for you.
Should I Wear Goggles When Applying Minoxidil?
Dear Doctor
Do you know any possible ways of avoiding eye irritation because of minoxidil lotion usage?
*Does it make any good if i put goggles on when i am applying it on my scalp?
*Does it make any good if i close my eyes during application?
*Does it make any good if i wash my forehead with a wet cloth after application?Thanks..
You should not get eye irritation from minoxidil use. If you are having eye irritation you are likely allergic to the medication or you are doing something wrong. Goggles are not likely the answer.
Should I wait to get a hair transplant?
Is it better to do it sooner or does it really matter when you undergo surgery? do I need to rush into it or will the results be the same if I wait a couple of years?
Timing of the surgery is a personal decision. The question is if you are bald, can you handle it, or , if you are becoming balder, can you handle it? If you are over 25, a hair transplant can be an option. Will getting your hair back now make a difference in your life?
Should I Use Vaseline On My Eyebrow Transplants?
Doctor, compare about eyebrow transplant and hair transplant. Which has higher success rate and why?
3-4 days after eyebrow transplant I have a very little crust and scabs. Is it a good sign? Do I have to use vaseline petroleum to my eyebrow right away after procedure?
Hair transplant results are the same for eyebrow or scalp. The eyebrows tend to crust less, but the key to keeping crusting down is to use a good washing technique daily after the transplant. I have never recommended Vaseline petroleum after a hair transplant.
Should I Use Propecia and Rogaine Together?
Dr. Rassman:
What is your opinion on Rogaine? Do you think it should be used with Propecia or is Propecia by itself sufficient?
Some people use both together, but I recommend using one at a time so you can figure out which one is providing benefits. If you see some results from Propecia, you can add Rogaine later to try for a maximum benefit. If you start with both and see results, you’re committing to a lifetime of using both medications (otherwise you won’t know which one is providing the results).
Rogaine can work, but I’ve seen better results from Propecia… particularly in men with early hair loss.

Should I use minoxidil with my transplanted hair?
Minoxidil will have no value to the transplanted hairs. Minoxidil’s has value is in the non-transplanted areas. I performed a study where I had patients apply minoxidil to 1/3rd of the transplanted area (to manage overlap) and then compared both the speed of growth and the thickness of the end result. There was no difference between the treated sides and the non-treated sides.
Should I Use Clippers or a Face Shaver After SMP?
Hi Dr. Rassman!
I am thinking about getting SMP for the entire scalp. I have had several hair transplant procedures so there is a considerable amount of scarring. I want to shave my head close to the scalp and have been told that I should still be able to do this. I am confused about whether I should use clippers (Oster 76 – 00000 Blade) or a face shaver (Remington 91/Remington 6150). Which would be better for me to use after the SMP procedure?
They all work, you just have to use what is most comfortable and convenient for you. I have no preference.
