Will I Go Bald?

Dear doctor, I understand that you’re a busy person, but I’d really appreciate if you took the time to anwser a few questions. I’m a 19 year old male; full head of hair without any signs of balding. My father and my paternal grandfather both have thick hair with no signs of balding. However, I once read an article about baldness being inherited from one’s mother and my maternal grandfather has no hair at all. Does this mean that I should be worried about going bald? I guess all men lose at least some hair due to old age; around what age would you say that natural balding starts to occur?

The leaning to one’s mother’s genetics is 51/49%. You probably won’t inherit any balding based upon what you told me, but if I am wrong, you will see in in your mid-20s or later.

Will I Go Bald if Dad is Bald?

If my dad is bald will i be bald too?? If so, when will I start losing my hair. I am 26 now.

We inherit our genetic balding from both sides of the family, even from our grandparents when our parents do not express the balding gene and have a full head of hair. Do not obsess with what may happen to you for if it has not started by 26, it is less likely that you will follow a signficant balding pattern. Ask your dad when he first noticed balding, and if it was after 30, then maybe time will yet unfold an outcome like his. If he started before 26, then it is likely that you will not follow his pattern. Most bald men have signs by the age of 26 that balding may happen.

Will I Experience the Same Side Effects from Dutasteride As I Do From Propecia?

I read your blog everyday, and really appreciate the advice you give to the balding community.

This is my question: If I had negative side effects from taking finasteride (Propecia) that actually made me stop taking the medication even after cutting the dosage, does this mean that I will likely experience the same or similar side effects if I decided to take Dutasteride? Do they contain the same side effect-causing ingredients, or do they work in different ways? The answer to this would really be helpful, as I am interested in taking Dutasteride, but was wondering whether the side effects that I had from Propecia would occur with Dutasteride (or even in a worse way).

Thanks so much for your time.

Those two medications work in similar ways, so I would expect the side effects should be similar. In fact, dutasteride is a stronger drug with a longer half-life, so if you experienced side effects from finasteride I would have to assume you’d see them with dutasteride… perhaps even to a greater degree and taking more time to disappear.

Remember though, dutasteride is not FDA approved to treat hair loss at this time. Your doctor would have to be willing to prescribe it off-label to you, something many doctors will not do.

Will I bald like my grandpa

My dad is 55 and is still a NW2 with good density, but unfortunately I don’t think I got his hair genes. Looking at my maternal grandfathers pictures I have a really similar hairline to him and the same big forehead. He said he didn’t start losing hair until 40 and was a nw7 around 60. However I think he started earlier than 40 he just didn’t really notice it getting bad until then. I was an NW2 at 20 and have been on fin since then (am 23 now) and am still an NW2, but my overall density has thinned a little bit. Do people usually follow an exact pattern as certain people in their family or is it sometimes a combination of multiple people?

Many men who are balding can find someone in their family line that have a balding pattern and rate of balding that they can identify with.

Great Question! Your final pattern is the pattern you inherit from your family (mother or father’s side). The drug finasteride will slow the transition to balding. However, it depends on the effectiveness of the drug in your situation. If your father and grandfather on both sides of the family had a Class 7 pattern, then it is likely that will also be your pattern. If you have great donor density, then it is possible that hair transplants can solve your balding problem as I have done in many Class 7 men with average or higher than average donor densities. You should find a great doctor who specializes in this field and build a Master Plan with that doctor so you can manage your hair loss. You will not be a hair transplant candidate until the age, at least, of 25.

Will my hair return? I had 3800 FUE grafts 10 days ago

You may have been over-harvested, and if that is the case, it may not return to normal. Wait it out for six months and see what happens. If your donor density was low, this can happen and cause donor site depletion, not only where it is outlined, but throughout the donor area as well. I am particularly disturbed that the hair loss occurred on the upper part of your donor area near the fringe where the hair may not be permanent.

Will Hair Regrow When Skin Does from the Cut On My Head?

I fell and have a tiny sliver 1/4 inch scar, but a i lost a chunk of hair and thin layer of skin about the size of a quarter. Will hair regrow when the skin does? how long?

If you lost hair bearing skin, then hair will not grow back. If the skin is sutured skin edge to skin edge (hair-to-hair edge), it will grow back.

Will Hair Regrow After Cyst Removal?

I had 2 cysts on my scalp removed at Easter and one has healed quite well but the other has left a bald spot about the size of a 50 cent peice. The skin is more pink and shinny. Will the hair grow back? There doesn’t appear to be any re-growth? Should I be seeking some form of treatment? What can I do to look normal again? This is not a good look for a female. Thanks.

You’ll have to allow more time to see if there will be regrowth. Being patient is all you can do at this point. If after a year the bald area is still the size of a half dollar, then you might have lost hair permanently… and a very limited hair transplant would likely solve the problem.
