When Will Generic Propecia Be Available?

I have been on finastaride for 3 years and have been taking 1/4 of a Proscar tablet daily. Do you know when generic Proscar will be available in the US? I know there are some overseas, but I don’t want to take the risk.

My Merck representative says Propecia (1mg of finasteride) goes off patent in 2011, but the generic Proscar (5mg of finasteride) goes off patent later this year. Many people will buy this generic finasteride and break the pill in quarters. Incidentally, I don’t trust the overseas drugs either, for there are too many cases of forged goods. This means it is a risk for you to take (and possibly lose your hair) for the short term gain of a few bucks.

Lastly, I’ve received a couple of emails in the past about this, and I would like to point out to new readers by stating unequivocally that although I am a big fan of Propecia, I am not employed or paid by Merck, nor do I own stock in the company (see here and here).

When Will Dr Rassman Retire?

Hello dr Rassman,

I think you are 68-69 years old.Does that mean that you are going to retire soon?If yes what will become of baldingblog?I hope you are going to be with us for another 5-10 years.

Dr RassmanMy grandparents lived well past their 90’s and longevity runs in the family… and since I love what I do, I suspect I will be doing this for a very long time. In fact, I am very involved with Dr. Pak in the engineering process of new hair transplant instruments and we will be testing a new FUE extractor and implanter in the next month!

Besides, even if I do eventually retire, I only need a computer and Internet for BaldingBlog, right? With respect to what you read on this site, Dr. Pak and I equally share contributing to the posts without the reader knowing who answered what. So even if I am gone for a long vacation, BaldingBlog will continue on. But in general, before any content is posted, both Dr Pak and I cross check and edit each other’s answers.

But just to make it clear, I am not planning on retiring yet.

When to use both dutasteride and finasteride?

Should Finasteride and Dutasteride be taken on the same day? For example: should I take Dutasteride in the morning, then Finasteride at night?

It makes no sense to use both dutasteride and finasteride. Pick one or the other. Get a doctor to advise you.

When Someone Gets 3000 Grafts Transplanted, Does That Mean 3000 New Hairs Will Grow at Most?

A graft should represent a Follicular Unit which contains between 1-4 hairs each. When an FUE is done, the surgeon usually cherry picks the larger grafts to give you more hair per graft, so that 3000 grafts should give you about 6000 or more hairs. A good surgeon actually counts these hairs and grafts, and can and should make these counts available to you after the surgery. IF the surgeon doesn’t offer this, then maybe the surgeon is hiding something from you.

When Should I Start to Use Rogaine for Women?

I have written before, forgive the repeated question (I have not seen it answered to date). I’m 36, female, thin hair. Is there a certain amount of thinning hair that should have taken place to be on Minoxidil (generic Rogaine-women)? It’s over the counter, and I’m having hair shedding now, due to either childbirth (I had a baby 5 months ago) or medications. My hair is thin and my dermatologist recomended I take minixidil for three months, tapering off it at that point, to get hair jump-started growing. I’m scared to not stay on it once I start it for fear of losing hair again, and want to know if there’s anything wrong with being on Minoxidil if you are not really thin-haired or balding? What constitutes the need for it? Is it up to the consumer?

If you have lost hair from the pregnancy, chances are that your hair loss will reverse over the next 6 months or so. You might want to hold off on the minoxidil, just for the reasons you suggest. If the hair came back and you were on the medication, you might ascribe it to the drug rather than the normal reversal which you will probably experience. If after 5-6 months, you still have not had your hair loss begin reversing, then consider the drug at that time.

When Should I Apply Minoxidil After I Take a Shower?

I have thinning hair on the top of my head. Should I apply minoxidil after a shower when the hair is still damp, or wait till it dries? If I apply when it is wet, it seems like more gets to the scalp since less gets absorbed by the hair and is easier to apply in between the hairs. But if the skin is nearly saturated with water, won’t less medicine get absorbed? The instructions don’t cover this.

I would use a towel to dry your hair and then apply minoxidil while the scalp circulation is increased from the warm water.

When Shedding

Ever since week two post op, I’ve been experiencing a lot of stress, anxiety, lack of sleep, and even panic attacks a few times. All of this is due to family issues, losing my job, and an underlying depression. These stressful issues have resulted in a very inflamed scalp. I’m now 2 months post op. My question is, can any of this, especially the stress/anxiety and inflamed scalp have permanently killed off my grafts?

Please help me. I’m at an all time low. Thank you

When Microneedling produces hair, how long will it last?

Generally, the dermaroller (the microneedling device) induces Anagen, a single hair cycle and it should be sustained for the duration of the growth cycle. After the hair goes into telogen (about 2-3 years for men and 3-5 years for women), the pre-treatment state should return so you would have to go through the entire dermroller treatment all over again. Microneedling induces wound healing and the release of inflammatory molecules that can stimulate hair growth bringing hairs that have stem cell present back to functioning and into the anagen growth cycle.
