I Want Specific Solutions to My Mustache Problem!

I’m looking for an explanation on why all of a sudden I have a bold spot in the right side of my mustache. I read about other persons having the same problem in your site and asking the same questions, but at that time, no specific answer was provided besides going to an specialist and sending you a photo. Any changes lately?

Just because I am a doctor, it does not mean I have all the answers. The sudden appearance of a bald spot could reflect a series of medical conditions such as ringworm, alopecia areata, and/or other autoimmune diseases. You need to see a good dermatologist if you want to know more.

I Want Scar Revision and Then FUE to Eliminate My Scar Completely

Hi,

First of all I want to thank you for this informative blog. I have searched this wonderful blog and have found numerous postings relating scars and hair transplant. Here’s my case: I have what “they” call a coronal scar that runs from ear to ear. What I want is to completely cover the scar through a FUE procedure, but I want my scalp to be like how it first was, normal. My research has been conclusive and I first want to have a scar revision surgery to reduce the width of the scar, once that is done i want to follow some type of scar treatment to make the scar less obvious in color (seems like the scar gets pink/red after a scar revision surgery). Afterward get the FUE procedure and go from there. Is there any treatments that you would suggest?

I want the scar to be inconspicuous to the point to be able to cut the hair in the military/short hair style, because ultimatley i want to join the military as an officer.

Best Regards

Your plan is good, but it may not be realistic to have the scar completely hidden. Even if the hair in the scar is brought up to near normal density (which may take a few FUE procedures), there is often a color difference in the remaining scar, though of course it will be hidden with FUE grafts.

As you are local to my Los Angeles office, please arrange to see me so that I can ascertain a plan that matches yours. Any preparatory treatments can be assessed and recommended when you see me. You can call 800-NEW-HAIR (or 310-553-9113) to schedule a free consultation with myself or Dr Pak.

I Want My Juvenile Hairline Restored with High Density

Hello. I needed to know if you have any high resolution before and after photos for male patients who have had transplants at NHI to restore their juvenile hairline with a high density. I was trying to find some on the newhair.com site, but couldn’t. I know that this is not a common procedure in men as many guys do not commit to taking propecia early on in the balding process and come in when the hair is only restorable to the mature position, but I’m sure juvenile hairline restoration has been done as for certain modeling/acting careers the thick Juvenile hairline is the aesthetic-standard.

The mature position is unacceptable for some of us, especially with how the aesthetic standard is becoming more stringent in 2011 due to many popular icons who lack the balding genes. I am considering doing hair transplantation for my career at your practice and was recommended to have FUE by my doctor (if I really wanted it). I do not have advanced balding or miniaturization beyond the hairline.

In general, we do not restore juvenile hairlines or any hairline with high density, especially with one surgery for most patients… perhaps with the exception of young male actors or models that have careers dependent on a specific look. You probably will not see these patients at our website, because many are convinced that their hairline will put them at risk for recognition if shown online. We don’t force patients to sign a photo release, so we can only post what we have permission for.

We don’t recommend transplanting a low hairline in men, because you are setting yourself up for disappointment if you develop a more advanced balding pattern over time. More specifically, I do not know what your expectation of “high density” and your desire for a “juvenile” hairline is.

If you want to see examples of hairline density, just attend one of our open house events in Los Angeles and see some of our patients in person. A few of them who regularly attend do have high density, and meeting them to see for yourself in person is a great way to get an idea of what can be done. Our next open house event in Los Angeles is this Saturday the October 1st, and you can find our upcoming free open house events listed here.

I Want My Head to Always Have a 5 O’Clock Shadow of Hair

Heres one for you: I wouldnt mind a shaved head if the shadow of existing thick hair wasnt so obvious around the donor areas. It’s like the top is your normal face color, and the donor areas white with potential hair. The shadow where hair grows is just so noticeable. My question is: is there a procedure where you can have implanted just tiny hairs as in a shadow over your balding? So it looks like you only shave your head?

I suppose you can tattoo your bald area, but that’s not the recommended route. I have seen it done in a few patients with reasonable results, but they have done this because of some deforming surgery they had from older hair transplant techniques many years earlier. Alternatively, you can air spray the balding area to develop a subtle shadow. If you’re looking to transplant a “5 o’clock shadow” look to your head (like the facial hair style that became popular in the 1980s), it’s really not going to be possible without having visible scarring to some degree (even if minor from FUE) in the donor area.

In other words, to answer your question — no.

I Want My Hair to Fall Out Faster So I Can Get a Transplant Sooner

I am currently taking finasteride and it has been helping me in slowing down my hair loss but not stopping or regrowing anything. If I am losing hair still, wouldn’t finasteride be a bad thing for me to take because I would want my hair to fall out faster so I can get a transplant right away instead of waiting to see my final hair loss pattern.

Wouldn’t this also avoid me risking shock hair loss if I get a transplant in areas I still have a bit of hair in which was being saved by finasteride?

Love the website.

Oh boy. Why in the world would you want your hair loss to progress faster?! Please read about building a Master Plan.

If you are ready for a hair transplant, I would think you would want your existing native hairs present as long as possible for a better result. Shock loss may be an issue, but that is something you discuss with you surgeon for its risks in relation to the aforementioned Master Plan.

I Want My Donor Area Repaired So I Can Shave My Head

Dear Dr. Rassman,

I am looking to have the donor area from an earlier procedure eliminated so that I could wear my hair extremely short or shaved.

Please let me know what you recommend.

Thanks in advance.

All cuts on the skin will produce a scar and most cannot be completely eliminated. Scars can certainly be minimized depending on the individual healing characteristics so that short hair is a reasonable option. At New Hair Institute (NHI), we continually strive to incorporate scar minimizing techniques in all our procedures and will tackle repairs of scars if they are there. Please refer to Techniques to Minimize Donor Scarring. Your original hair transplant surgeon should be able to address your scar. If not, I would be happy to meet with you in person or by phone to discuss your options.

I Want My 17 Year Old Brother to Take Propecia

Hello Dr.

I have a problem regarding my brother starting to lose his hair.He is losing his hair at a very young age (he is 17.5) I want to get him on propecia since he is nearly 18 but i am worried that even 18 years old is a little young to use propecia,do you think this is true? The reason i think it may be too young is that boys don’t stop growing until they are around 20 to 22 sometimes, and i am worried that DHT is needed for boys to develop into men.Do you think 18 years old is to young to use propecia and could it stunt his growth? I am really worried for him, please respond.

You are your brother’s brother, not his doctor, so you can not be objective about the process of hair loss and its diagnosis and treatment. Assuming that he meets with a good doctor, gets examined for miniaturization, and gets a diagnosis of male pattern baldness (MPB), taking Propecia at 17.5 years old should not be a problem. The clinical trials and data are from men as young as 18 years old, and as you stated he’s nearly 18, he should be done growing anyway.

Maybe there is something else wrong? Perhaps he is not genetically balding, but just developing a mature hairline In any case, do what is right and in his best interests. Seeing a doctor should be step 1, as the medication is by doctor’s prescription.

I Want More Facial Hair

Other than a transplant are there any methods, creams, or procedures to increase facial hair growth? I know it sounds ridiculous but I am 100% serious. I’m growing my beard and its not growing in areas I’d like it to. Thank you

It’s not a ridiculous question, but I don’t know anything about you so I’ll have to generalize. If I assume that you are a young man under 25 years old (you didn’t mention your age), that would be typical of late onset appearance of beard formation. If you wait it out, your beard will most likely appear over the next few years.

I remember when I was 20 years old, my beard was thin and spotty. My father told me to wait and one day it would look like his (very scratchy, coarse hair). He also told me that one day I would wish it did not grow as heavy as his. Oh, was he ever right! That is exactly what happened and over the next 5 years, my beard came in heavy enough that my 5 o’clock shadow came in at about 1pm. Now I wish it never grew in, as shaving is quite the daily chore.

If you are over 25 years old, you might try Rogaine (minoxidil) and apply it to your face twice a day, but be careful you do not overdose the medication and develop side effects that are defined in the drug insert found in the product packaging. It’s not guaranteed to grow a beard, but you don’t really have many options for facial hair growth.

I Want All Body and Head Hair Gone

This might sound weird, but I dont want body hair or head hair. What can I do to got rid of it permanently?

You’re one of the very few that write in wanting to know ways to get rid of hair. Electrolysis and hair removal lasers (epilators) are the only permanent method to remove unwanted hair and removing all of your hair would be quite difficult. These involve using electric current to damage the areas that generate hair or lasers to burn them at the roots, but both of these methods have a high failure rate (50% per hair per treatment on average).

It’s too bad there is no method of donating hair to other people (beyond for wig making purposes). We know some people that would love to be in your situation.
