I have been on minoxidil and finasteride for over a year and now am shedding very fast

Is there a way to tell the difference between a standard min/fin shed cycle and min/fin no longer being effective? I’ve lost a ton in the past 3-4 weeks after being on fin and min for over 14 months, and am terrified min/fin are no longer effective and that this shedding won’t stop.

If you have been on finasteride and minoxidil for 14 months are are now seeing shedding, you most likely are experiencing an acceleration of your balding. You might want to see your doctor and get an opinion. If you were my patient, I would have had a HAIRCHECK test done on you a year ago and would repeat the test to confirm new hair loss and to what degree. That is the value of the HAIRCHECK test when you start treatment.

I Have Alopecia Totalis — Anything You Can Recommend, Either Clinical or Cosmetic?

I am 41 years old and a female. When i was 4yrs of age, i lost all my hair, including eyebrows, eyelashes, scalp and the nails on my fingers and toes. With homeopathy over a period of time, i regained my eyelashes, eyebrows, nails. With puberty, i grew hair in the correct places, normally. Just my scalp, arms and legs remain without hair till today.

I was diagnosed with Alopecia Totalis. I am happily married with a son also now. Do you have any hope for me,whatsoever? If not clinical, then
anything cosmetic that you can recommend for me which would be available in India?

Unfortunately, there is little anyone can offer for treating alopecia totalis. There are people with this disease where the gene runs in the family and the hair loss goes complete at the age of about 4. These conditions do not reverse.

You can visit the National Alopecia Areata Foundation site for support and the latest research.

I have Alopecia Areata

I have Alopecia Areata and the patchy part of the disease that had various bald spots is gone. Now I am left with thinning hair but a normal hairline, but a thin one. Can I have Scalp Micropigmentation?

Good planning with SMP is critical in discussions with your doctor. In a worst case scenario where your disease comes back with a vengeance, you can always resort to a shaved look that will look good always, regardless of the presentation of the AA. We often perform SMP giving the patient the opportunity to go both ways, with a full head of hair (whatever they have especially when thinning or patchy balding spots) to a shaved head of hair. These are options should be discuss with your doctor. This is a great option for patient who don’t know what their future hair loss will look like.

I Have Acne — Is That Because I Have More Testosterone Than Normal?

I am 23 years old and I am an avid bodybuilder. I work out 6x per week, and the only supplements I take are whey protein and creatine ethyl ester. I still have some acne on my back and upper shoulders and occasionally on the chest and face. I used to have it worse on the shoulders but I started exfoliating and it’s def. 99% better, although I still get some here and there. I was wondering if b/c I am 24 and have acne if this is b/c I have more testosterone than normal. I should also say my sex drive is not very high at all, and I’m relatively unhairy on the chest, back, legs, arms, face.

I also drink a lot of milk, typically milk that says it’s from cows untreated with rbGH or any growth hormones. I read on Wikipedia that milk could cause IGF-1 levels to increase. Could this cause hair loss?

Regards.

It is not known why one young man develops acne and another of the same age does not. Clearly the presence of testosterone is important for it to be there as it reflects an over-secretion of sebum and cyst formation. To be sure, you should be under the care of a good dermatologist. Bodybuilding, milk, IGF-1, acne, sex drive, and testosterone are all extraneous factors that do not have a direct causational relationship and you are just complicating the matter. As an example, you can have a very high testosterone level and still have no hair on your body. You can have a high testosterone level and still have a low sex drive, because sex drive is a complex problem. You can have no hair on your body and have a full head of hair (or vice versa or any permutations) You can drink rBGH milk or any type of milk for that matter and still have hair loss… or no hair loss depending on your genes. Get the point?

I am curious to know, if I were to tell you that working out and bodybuilding were causing your hair loss, are you prepared to stop working out? I doubt the connection!

I Have a Vitamin D Deficiency and Diffuse Hair Loss.

Hello, as the title says, I have vitamin D deficiency (10.22 ng/mL, below 20 ng/mL) and severe diffuse thinning. I’m talking shitty hair density all around the scalp, the top, front, back and sides. Basically, all scalp is visible. However, I still retain my Nw1 hair line from 18 years old(currently 20) or so. My father is bald but his baldness started out in a classic horse shoe pattern until Nw6-7 and that started in his mid 20s till 30s. My hair loss started by shedding 150-200 hairs every shower starting 13-14 years old which lasted for a few years(stopped at about 17-18 yrs old) leaving me with shitty density all around. Could fixing my vit D deficiency improve the situation on it’s own or do I need to complement it with minox/fin/rolling?

Fix the Vitamin D problem first. As we know, it can cause hair loss if the Vitamin D levels are very low.

I Have a Small Scar On My Head from When I Was a Child

(female) I have a small scar from a cut I got when I was younger. Hair doesn’t seem to grow there anymore, and I was just wondering if there is any procedure I could get to fill in this scar. It’s very small, but it bothers me, because it is on my part. It’s noticible when I want to part my hair down the middle. What can I do?

A small hair transplant into the scar should solve that problem. This is easy to do and should take under an hour (depending upon the size you call small) in a skilled specialized office.
