Hypertrichosis and minoxidil

Will the hypertrichosis caused by minoxidil stop at one time if I stop minoxidil, Or will the unwanted hair all over the body keep growing longer and darker if I keep taking minoxidil? Here in France, no doctor have knowledge about this issue….

If you are getting hypertrichosis with minoxidil, then as long as you take the drug, it will continue. When you stop it, the hypertrichosis should go away in a matter of months

Hyperthyroid and Hair Loss

Thank you Doctor for a great blog and for taking my question. I am a healthy 44yo male and have been shedding hair for almost 9 months now. I have seen a GP, a Derm. and a Endo. doctor who all found my thyroid to be slightly hyper. ( 3.4 , range 0.40-4.50) My derm. said I do not have MPB and diagnosed me with global telogen effluvium and feels my thyroid MAY be causing my hair loss. My DHT level is 29 (range 25-75). The GP and Endo. state that my thyroid is only a little hyper and that is not the reason for my hair loss and will not treat me for it.

My question Doctor is can a slightly hyperthyroid cause hair loss and is that loss permanent? Also, is there anything I can do for it aside from avoiding caffine, soy and shellfish. Thank you very much for your time.

Thyroid issues can lead to hair loss, and it can be permanent, particularly if you’re genetically inclined to lose hair anyway. Of course I would have to see you to determine if you have hair loss with miniaturization present in a pattern that reflects the genetic process.

There is also a genetic test to determine if you are carrying the gene for hair loss which, if negative, would rule out that as a cause. If your genetic test is positive and the miniaturization testing shows a pattern of hair loss, then drugs like finasteride (Propecia) should work and is something that is worth considering assuming that you have a doctor willing to abide by my plan. For more about the genetic test, see HairDX.com.

Hyperparathyroidism and Hair Loss?

(male) Hey,

I wrote before and didn’t know if you missed my last question or just didn’t get a chance to answer it. To cut to the chase, is there a relationship between hair loss and hyperparathyroidism (and the removal of a parathyroid gland)? Blood tests also indicated that I had high testosterone levels before that along with high calcium. Surgery was 2 years ago. I’m just about 21 right now.

Thanks for your help

One of the symptoms of hyperparathyroidism is hair loss. I do not have experience about reversal once the condition is treated successfully. You are of the age where genetic hair loss may come into play here. Be sure that you get your hair mapped out for miniaturization, so that you can be sure that you are not also experiencing genetic hair loss. If there is miniaturization present, then is may be likely that the hair will not grow back.

Hygiene, Pulling, and Hair Loss

Dr Rassman,

I appreciate your reponse regarding sebum question in whether it causes hairloss. You responded by saying it doesnt cause hairloss but it may cause your hair to be stuck to your scalp, then pulled out when combing or brushing, which leads me to 2questions.

1) IF hair is pulled out, would that loss of hair be permenant or would you regrow it once consistant washing resumes?

2) To put simply can hygiene like my case of not washing my scalp consistantly for 4yrs cause permenant hairloss? Like I said, its possible I went up to a month w/o washing with shampoo although the scalp got wet everyday because I did take a shower daily. Are all the factors that contribute to hairloss below the scalp, so even if a scalp was dirty or oily, it wouldnt make a difference?

EmergencyAs I said in my last response to you, not washing your hair will not cause hair loss, even for years.

If hair is pulled out once, twice or just a few times, it will usually regrow. If it is consistent, we call the hair loss traction alopecia (caused by pulling) and it can be permanent.

I remember a patient of mine with a beautiful hair transplant (one time surgery). He was mugged and the gang that mugged him, held him by his hair while they beat him and robbed him. After they finished with him, they yanked out his transplanted hair, laughed and left him with a broken nose, lacerations on the face, torn lip and scalp bleeding. He was taken to my office looking like a train wreck because he refused to go to a hospital Emergency Room. He only cared about the hair that was pulled out and gone. I told him that his hair would come back and sent him on to a hospital emergency room with the ambulance that brought him to my office. Later that year, he told me that all of his hair grew back within 4-6 months.

Human Hair Density

i am a student at State University of New York College at Geneseo. i am doing a reseach and it requires me to find out the density of human hair, in terms of kg/m^3.

i know that human hair density might have a range. if you have that stat., please also give me.

thank you very much for your concern.

In the Caucasian, human hair density averages 2.2-2.3 hairs/mm square. In Asians, the density averages approximately 1.6 hairs/mm square and in Africans, is averages apprxomately 1.3 hairs/mm square. In the head of an average male with a hair bearing area of approximately 80 square inch area, the density is approximately 1250 hairs per square inch (rounded) bringing the total count to 100,000.

You must keep in mind that this is center point in a Bell Curve, and standard deviations overlap heavily between the races. The highest densities I have measured were in Caucasians at 4 hairs per mm square and the lowest numbers are not trustworthy because they may reflect diseases or some form of genetic balding.

Human Growth Hormone Reversed my Post Finasteride Syndrome

good afternoon Dr. Wrassman, I would like your opinion on the use of HCG to reverse the effects of PFS. This user reports reversal in 6 months after HCG administration: https://raypeatforum.com/community/threads/finally-cured-from-post-finasteride-syndrome.33215/ “…After nearly 4 years of suffering, I have finally & fully recovered from Post Finasteride Syndrome

All my symptoms have subsided and improved with this method which takes a while but I am fully functional It’s H.C.G (HCG) dosed at 250IU Monday, Wednesday and Friday only. I did this for 6 months straight but at the 10th week or so, the improvements were weekly. That is 250IU, not a typo… so you’ll mix your 5000iu HCG with 5CC water and take 1/4 CC intramuscular three times a week using an insulin needle…”

Have you heard about it?

I am not aware of the use of Human Growth Hormone in the treatment for Post Finasteride Syndrome. I did a limited search and did not find other such claims. Worth exploring possibly for those people who have not found a cure.

Huge Reduction in Body Hair Since Starting Propecia Years Ago

I am just following up on a recent post I read on your Blog – I am 44. I have been on Propecia for almost 4 years – starting off as a Norwood 2.5, I have probably progressed to a Norwood 3 over this time. My hairfall seems to be less than a few years back, so I am not going to risk getting off Propeica – it is probably doing some good.

My question however is about the impact on body hair – I have probably seen a 30-50% reduction in body hair over the 4 year period. Is this likely to be related to Propecia, or is their some other factor. (FYI I am a regular smoker and accept that this may be impacting the benefits of Propecia)

It very likely could be the Propecia is causing your reduction in body hair. People have reported body hair loss with Propecia, and one rare occasions I have heard it go the other way. I wish I’d experienced the loss of body hair when I was taking the medication, but I wasn’t that lucky. I’d expect most patients would prefer to have this side effect, particularly those with excessive hair in undesirable areas (back, shoulders).

Huge central necrosis from hair transplant

This was a complication arising out of a hair transplant performed by unskilled technicians in Turkey. The patient most likely was a smoker. This complication is called ‘Necrosis’ which means in this situation, all of the skin in the area that is now an open crater has died. Fortunately, he either sloughed off the dead skin or a surgeon removed it. I will eventually heal with a huge scar and transplants into the scar may correct the defect after everything has settled down.
