How long do transplanted hairs live typically?
Generally, they live as long as the source hair where they came from. The donor area in the back of your head generally lasts your lifetime so when it is transplanted, it lasts our lifetime 98% of the time.
How Long Do I Need to Wait After Injury Heals to Transplant Into It?
Hello Doctor,
Maybe a slightly unique question here… I have about an inch forehead scar in the hairline(above right temple side of head) I received from injury back in April, and had it revised with a scar revision procedure in June. Results are good (about 2 months into the healing/remodeling phase), but I’m facing facts here: I want the hair back where the incision-line scar is, no matter how less/ or barely visible the scar is overall…My question would be at the 3 month mark here in September (if 3 months matters, as that is when I have my follow-up with the plastic surgeon who performed the revision at that time as well), would I be able go forward with the minor transplant without jeopardizing the healing scar? It’s primary (main) healing phase is already complete, right? So, would I be safe in getting the procedure done? Or could I jeopardize the scar or general healing phase of the area at all? Thanks so much for your help; I read your blogs frequently.
I would have no hesitation to transplant the area after 3 months have passed, but might be concerned at less than that time period. The basic scar healing should be complete by then. For those curious about the various phases of wound healing, check out this article.

How Long Can You Realistically Delay Hair Loss?
Delaying hair loss depends upon (1) the types of genetic hair loss you have inherited, (2) its overall aggressiveness, (3) your ability to get good responses to drugs like minoxidil or finasteride. The drug finasteride can be very effective in delaying hairloss providing that the genes are not very aggressive.

How long can topical finasteride be effective?
Do you believe that it stays effective long term? (Say more than two years) Or will it lose effectiveness compared to the oral form? I am 22 years of age and considering taking topical instead of oral. Let me know what you think.
If you are asking me if you continue to apply it for 2 years or more, will it still be effective. The answer is yes!

How Long Can Shock Loss Last?
Hi, Im 23 and i had a hair transplant almost 4 months ago. I’ve been on propecia for 3 + years with good results. I have an observation and a question for you regarding shock loss.
I’ve noticed that i’m losing a fair amount of native hairs in my recipient area, BUT, i’m really only losing these hairs after i workout really hard. For instance I went for a very intense run two months and right after i was finished i ran my hands through my hair and i noticed a mass amount of hair falling out from my recipient area. Do you think my workouts are contributing to the process of shock loss? If so how long will this last? ( how long can shock loss last?)
For starters, shock loss usually slows down between 3-5 months following your hair transplant. I really can’t fully address your concerns, because I haven’t had the opportunity to examine you before and after your surgery.
In our office, we offer the use of a device called HairCheck, which is a way of measuring hair bulk. We would’ve had measurements of before your surgery and if you really had shock loss after the surgery, we would actually be able to calculate how much hair you lost. This test could have been repeated monthly after noticing the problem. The first thing is to diagnose what is really happening.
Many men in your young age group are riskier patients for shock hair loss. Based upon your report, I can’t confirm your opinion without at least seeing you and all of your before photos. I would want to know what your patterned hair loss was like, where the recipient sites were placed (I hope that it was not placed in areas where you had significant amounts of native hair), and I would want to be able to predict the status of your miniaturization throughout the scalp. If you had significant miniaturization present and rapid hair loss present before your surgery, that would be an alert of an unusual risk for shock loss.
How Long Can I Skip Propecia for Without Problems?
I take propecia. It works. I’ve taken it for about 6 months. How long can I miss a dose? If I miss a day, I know it says just take one the next day. But will my hair fall out, and then the program just restart? Is there a site describing the way the drug works in your body, that would help me get this idea down? How much time can you miss?
Thanks.
Well, I wouldn’t suggest that you try to miss a dose. If you should miss a day, I doubt that it would produce measurable hair loss. Same goes for two skipped days… but 1 week starts to creep up on you and one month certainly will not be good. I have only seen 3 months of stopping Propecia where significant hair loss occurred. Don’t make it a regular habit of skipping days, though.

How Long Can A Hair Graft Survive Outside The Body
I was wondering how long can you have a hair follicle outside the body before it dies? I had surgery that lasted 10 hours and I am worried because I saw my grafts sitting in a clear solution for over three hours. Is this normal?
A freshly extracted hair follicle or hair graft can survive outside the body for as long as 6 plus hours. It is very fragile and if mishandled it may desiccate and “die” in as little as a minute. A harvested graft must be hydrated, kept moist, and cooled as soon as it leaves the body. Cooling slows down the metabolism process. If your grafts were not cooled, it may be an issue!
It all comes down to the experience and expertise of the surgeon and staff. With poor coordination, and standardization the surgery may be failure even before it has a chance to be implanted.
Some doctors use special solutions and precise temperatures to keep the grafts alive longer. However, this DOES NOT guarantee that the grafts will go on to survive the implantation process! More importantly there have been recent concerns that these new “solutions” to maximize the graft survivability may actually do harm than good. Often times doctors may advocate PRP but these solutions also have not been proven by randomized controlled scientific studies.
The implantation process can also dry up the grafts and harm the grafts if mismanaged by an inexperienced staff. In other words, cooling or preserving the harvested grafts would all be for nothing, if the team cannot transfer it from the petri dish back to the recipient site with care and expertise.
This is one of the many reasons that hair transplant surgery is not a standard or a guaranteed process. In other words, shopping for “cheap” surgeries may sacrifice these critical quality control issues.
