Help me doctor! I think I am thinning my hair and have DUPA?

Well, this is not an uncommon question for many people who wake up one day and look in the mirror and see what they never noticed before. Usually, it is never this bad, of course (please excuse the patient but I got him up too early to do up his hair). Hair loss in Monkeys is common and balding in chimps are also common so humans don’t have a monopoly for this problem. Hair serves as both a sensory organ (one feels a mosquito landing on the scalp as the hairs are often touched by the mosquito) and it is also a good radiator where wind moving through the hair allows the body to lose heat. That is why African hair is kinky as it allows air to move freely and cool the body when a man is running. But from a cosmetic point of view, men want hair and that is why I am in this business and regardless of your race, men and society think that hair makes you look healthy and younger. DUPA occurs when there is miniaturization all over, including the donor area (back and sides of the head) and it is very uncommon. Too many young men who read about DUPA (Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia) think that they have it and I can’t tell you how many men call or write to me about their DUPA diagnosis without proof that it is there.

Help, I’m 16 and Balding!

Hello Im balding as a 16 yo guy. My temples are already norwood 2 (but it doesnt matter as my hair covers it) BUT now recently I started shedding in the crown. When I brush my crown I find 5-7 hairs everytime. It didnt used to be so much a few months ago. And This is scary as fuck. But I dont know what to do. Should I start minoxidil? Please note that my crown balding isnt really visible yet and seems more like a cowlick, but this is terribly scary.

Im also concerned that minoxidil wont stop the shedding, will destroy my collagen and make me look older. Of course finasteride and other DHT related meds are out of the question here because of my age. What should I do?? Im really lost here, nobody believes me from my dermatologist to my family, they are all in denial.

Start off by getting a HAIRCHECK test ( https://baldingblog.com/haircheck-test-how-it-is-done-and-what-its-value/ ) to find out if you are really balding and then with a metric, you can follow the process over the years with yearly tests. As you treat the hair loss, you will know what is happening with the impact of the treatment.

I Am a Heavy Smoker and Will Not Stop Even When I Have a Hair Transplant

If a heavy smoker has a hair transplant, there is potentially decreased growth because cigarette smoking reduces the blood supply to the scalp. No one can predict your results other than seeing what happens 8 months after the transplant. We are all in control of what we do.

Heavy Drinking Blocks Finasteride Effectiveness

New study showing heavy alcohol usage blocked effects of finasteride (half way down page): Prostate cancer and alcohol

The link has quick paragraphs about a variety of topics, but here’s the relevant info from the page (the bold emphasis added was mine) —

“This study analyzed data on 10,920 men. In a seven-year span, prostate cancer was detected in 2,129 of them, including 564 men with high-grade tumors, which grow and spread quickly. Those who consumed, on average, four or more drinks a day (totaling roughly two ounces or more of pure alcohol) five days a week in the year before diagnosis were more than twice as likely to have developed high-grade prostate cancer as were those who did not drink. No link was found between prostate cancer and more-moderate drinking. Also, among men who had been randomly assigned to take finasteride (Proscar, Propecia) as part of other research to test the drug’s ability to prevent prostate cancer, heavy drinking blocked the effectiveness of the drug.

This is interesting, but it doesn’t necessarily prove that heavy drinking blocks finasteride effectiveness. Heavy drinking (4+ drinks a day) in itself can cause higher grade cancer. It should go without saying, but heavy drinking is not good in any case. If there is indeed an association with finasteride not working when you drink heavily, I would say it is a good idea to limit your alcohol intake!

Heat Transfer from Human Hair Can Be Damaged from the Use of Straightening Devices and Chemicals (Article)

https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/ics.12553?cookieSet=1

Objective

In the process of daily grooming, human hair often undergoes heat treatments. These treatments create temperature gradients inside individual hair fibres or bundles of hair which can lead to hair damage.

Methods

Mathematical models were built for heat transfer in a single hair as well as thin tresses of hair during blow drying.

Results

Mathematical analysis led to temperature profiles suggestive of fast transfer of heat in a single hair mainly through conduction. However, in a hair assembly, the process involved both conduction and convection leading to a slower rate of heat transfer. Penetration of heat to the centre of the hair assembly took minutes rather than seconds.

Conclusion

This model is useful in understanding hair damage potential in styling hair with high temperature devices such as flat irons and processes which involve deforming hair at relatively high temperatures.

Heartburn from Propecia?

Doctor,

Having GI problems wondering if they’re related to Propecia. My doctor is not aware of a connection and I don’t see it listed as a common side effect. But you’re much more familiar with the drug in clinical practice than my MD. Symptoms are diarrhea and heartburn. Is cutting back the dose to say a quarter and try slowly increasing it an option?

Thanks.

I have never heard of diarrhea and heartburn complaints from Propecia.

Heart problems from Minoxidil

I kinda have a weird sensation after applying minox. My heartbeat is normal but I get this weird feeling when I breath in and out, my heart gets cold and feels like a needle sticking.

Minoxidil causes reduced blood pressure and could cause cardiac symptoms. You should see your family doctor as this could be a sign of other heart problems.

Heart palpitations on Minoxidil foam

Any reason why I get bad heart palpitations from 2% min foam? Rogaine brand if that matters

Heart palpitations are a side effect of minoxidil. You are absorbing it systemically despite the fact that you are putting it on your scalp. I would speak with your doctor about this. You probably should stop using minoxidil.

Heart Disease Starts In Childhood

According to the article in Circulation, March 18 “Most US children start life with optimal cardiovascular health (CVH), but it declines substantially over time.

“Our findings indicate that, in general, children start with pretty good blood pressure. But if they have a horrible diet, it will drive a worsening body mass index (BMI) and cholesterol levels,” senior author Donald M. Lloyd-Jones, MD, said in a news release. Dr Lloyd-Jones is professor of preventive medicine at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. “The better we can equip our children to make healthy choices, the more cardiovascular health will be preserved into adulthood. And those who preserve their heart health into middle age live much longer and are much healthier while they live,” he added.

I remember a study where autopsies were done on Korean war dead. The finding, to the best of my memory, was that there was advanced cardiac atherosclerosis in most of them (most under the age of 21). When correlated with more modern times, a new study “shows that the rate of American service members with signs of coronary artery disease has declined sharply in the last half century, falling to roughly 1 in 10 military personnel today from about 8 in 10 during the Korean War. The findings came as a surprise to some researchers, who expected that the nationwide rise in obesity and Type 2 diabetes, including among young people, might have led to a similar trend in heart disease in the military. But instead it appears that national reductions in other risk factors for heart disease, like hypertension, smoking and high cholesterol, have had a greater effect on cardiovascular health.”

What is the lesson here. Start your children with a conscious focus on a proper, healthy diets. It may not be reversible if they eat poorly for years, so the best gift you can give your children is the gift of a good diet and hopefully a long life.
