Hair Loss Started Again After a Couple Years on Propecia

Hello,
I have been taking Propecia now for about 2 1/2 years and believe it has slowed my hair loss down but has not stopped it. In the last 6 months I have noticed significant hair loss and thinning. What can I do? Also is Avodart or any other promising drugs soon to be approved to treat hair loss by the FDA? And if so when? Thank you for your time

Propecia does not show the same benefits forever. Every person will eventually lose the benefits of this drug, but the open question is when. Avodart might be more effective in people like you, but as you know, it is not FDA approved for use in treating hair loss. I couldn’t say when or if it will be approved for this, nor do I have any inside tips on upcoming drugs that are pending approval. There’s a lot of money to be made if a medication can be proven safe and effective, so I’m sure there are companies out there trying to find the next best treatment. I just don’t know who they are…

Hair Loss Started After Extreme Dieting, But Doctor Says It is MPB

I am a 18 year old male. I had lost 60 pounds with in 4-5 month period with restricting food intake and exercising 6 out of 7 days of the week. Ever since I had noticed more hair was falling out and it was getting thinner. Now Im starting to eat more I decided to visit the doctor. he sent me to the dermatologist and the dermatologist said I might have male pattern baldness or hair loss due to stress. He was leaning more towards male pattern baldness because he saw the middle of my scalp was more visible and thinning more and he thinks the weight loss made my male pattern baldness come ever earlier. surprisingly no one in my family, moms family or dad’s family had male pattern baldness. And before my weight loss my hair was very thick and strong. I really need some help should I go to another doctor to look at my hair loss problem? Any suggestions would be ever so useful please and thank you my friends.

Diets that tend to reduce a good, balanced nutritional intake of foods are known to cause acceleration of the genetic balding process. If it isn’t a genetic process, the stress from the malnutrition could cause the hair loss. But if you’ve already seen a doctor that suggested your hair loss appeared to likely be genetic, I couldn’t dispute that since I haven’t examined you for myself.

Hair loss on sides and back of the head after a hair transplant (photo)

I belieeve that you are addressing the hair loss on the sides and in the back that are shown in the photo shown by the arrows. I have never seen this type of loss outside of the transplanted area and in areas (particularly the side) where the hair is usually permanent. Time will tell (6 months) if this is the result of the anesthetic or not. .A biopsy, at some point in time, may be a reasonable thing to do by a good dermatologist? who should be managing the problem

Do All Hair Loss Progress to Complete Baldness in MPB?

Your final pattern of balding is what shows on the Norwood Classification Chart. That means that one of these patterns will be your final pattern. The older you are, the more certain you can be about your final pattern. If I am your doctor, I will perform yearly HAIRCHECK tests which will tell me well in advance what your final pattern might look like. For reasons I am not sure, other doctors don’t offer this service.

Hair Loss Product Warning Labels

Why do hair loss products say “do not use if you have no family history of hair loss”? By using these products if you don’t have a history of hair loss cause one to start losing hair? Please answer this question instead of telling me to get a miniaturization done or to use Propecia.

I do not know the reason why they have the warning label you mention, nor do I even know what product you are referring to. If you are concerned, you can call or write the manufacturer and find out. Or perhaps you can try the product and test your hypothesis.

I often advise people who are concerned or worried about their hair loss to at least get a screening for miniaturization of their scalp hair, because you need to know WHAT you have BEFORE you treat it. Blindly buying hair growth products would be a waste of your money if you don’t know the cause of your hair loss or the degree of hair loss that is actually present. Likewise, blindly taking any of these products may leave you ‘not knowing’ if they are actually working. The same is true for taking Propecia or minoxidil when you do have androgenic hair loss because it could mean that you would also be throwing your money away if it does not work on you. This is why I recommend that miniaturization tests are done to grade the hair loss (if you have it) and then measure it (as it responds or does not respond to whatever you are treating it with) over the time that the treatment is being used. If it seems like I do make this recommendation too often on this blog site, well, that’s just what good medicine and good science is about and this is ‘my’ personal blog site and the way I like to run it. I try like hell to focus on objective things and I am not emotional about products that ‘claim’ but can not ‘prove’ value. This is why this site has become very successful in just a year.

For the record, the decision to take Propecia or any drug should be a decision made between the patient and his doctor. If I seem to advocate the efficacy of Propecia, it is due to the fact that it is the only FDA approved and well studied medication that has been shown to grow hair or slow down androgenic hair loss with any reasonable predictability. I am not a spokesperson for Propecia (nor do I have any financial interest in the success of Propecia). As a medical doctor, I base my medical opinion on safe and ethical medications and I require that all claims and issues of safety and effectiveness meet FDA approved guidelines.

Hair Loss Paranoia

Hey, thank you for keeping this blog – it’s a great help! I’m an 18 year old male with a little bit of paranoia (nobody else thinks I’m losing hair). I’ve been reading about miniaturization. I noticed that some of the hair that comes out when I’m washing my head is finer than other hair. I have no idea if this is normal or not – what do you think?

It is normal to lose around 100 hairs every day as new ones grow in. If you have product in your hair (hair spray, gel, wax, etc), it may keep some of those hairs trapped until you shower, and then appear to have a bunch of hairs coming out at once… when in reality, it was just your normal daily hair cycling.

Hair Loss on Top of Head, Hairline is Fine

PorcupineI am 29, male. Recently I got my hair cut rather short, and it has kind of spiked up, somewhat resembling a porcupine, i guess you could say. I notice when looking at my head from above that my hair seems thinner, like there are some areas not as full as others. Is this a sign of hair loss? My hair line is not receding, and my hair is fine at the crown/point at back of head, where you usually see bald spots in people going bald. Do you have any idea what I am seeing in the mirror? Is there a pattern of baldness where you start to lose hair on the top or in the middle of your head? Thanks in advance for your comments.

Some people will develop thinning behind the hairline, leaving a normal hairline. We also see thinning in the crown with no problem in the frontal area as well. The first 3/4 inch from the highest crease or the wrinkled brow is the juvenile component of the frontal look. Behind this first 3/4 inch starts what I call the mature hairline.

The shorter you cut your hair, the more you will see of any thinning that is present. To find out what this means, map out your hair and scalp for miniaturization so that you can know if this is a genetic pattern for you. If it is genetic, Propecia works well in the crown.

Hair Loss On One Side of Head

i’m 25. i started noticing thinning hair in the temple area at the age of 21-22 so i shaved my hair. i kept it like that for 2 years. i started taking propecia for 12 months while my hair was shaved and added rogaine in to that. After the 2 year period i let my hair grow out and to my surprise the front temple hair line looked good. i kept it long for a couple of months, but after a while i started losing hair again on my right hand side. keep in mind i’m still using propecia and rogaine. i want to know if its a faze that my hair has to go through, or if this hair loss is gonna be permanent. its only happening on one side of my head.

The frontal hairline is often not symmetrical You need to evaluate your scalp with miniaturization studies to see just where your hair loss is going. The focused question is — Where are you going with your hair loss? You need a few measurements over time to find out if the Propecia is failing to work. If the hairline has gone up quite a bit, you might be a candidate for a hair transplant, but first you need to be evaluated.
