Does Increased Shedding with Finasteride Mean Its Effective?

gday doc,

great blog.

l’ve been on 1mg finasteride for about 9 mths and have recently noticed increased shedding (about 2-3 times more hair than usual).

lve read that finasteride causes synchronization of the hair cycle and as such this can occur and might be taken as a sign that the medication is effective.

Is this correct?

No one really knows for sure. I have heard reports from patients and readers such as yourself that starting finasteride may cause shedding. Aside from the anecdotal evidence, I have not heard or read about a scientific research on this phenomenon. I would hope that the shedding is the result of the drug and the hair going into another growth cycle rather than an acceleration of the hair loss that is due to your genetics. Time will tell the answer here as the shedding should stop and reverse by the 4th month if it is caused by a change in your hair cycle.

Nevertheless, the effectiveness of finasteride (Propecia) has been well studied and documented. Thus, it would not be a good idea to stop taking the medication if you are experiencing hair loss. The hair loss may be worse if you stop the medication as your body will play “catch up” and go back to the state as if you were never on the drug.

Does High Estrogen in Men Contribute to Hair Loss?

Can high estrogen levels in males contribute to hair loss (miniaturiztion/thinning)? I suffer from low libido, fatigue and a female hairloss pattern(dupa)… my estrogen/estradiol is at 45… my doc has put me arimidex…

Increased estrogen in men could be present in several conditions, including congenital adrenal hyperplasia, alcoholism, liver disease, and estrogen-producing tumors. Excess estrogen can cause sexual dysfunction, breast tenderness or enlargement, and increased body fat in a female pattern.

Hair loss is typically not one of the signs of excess estrogen and on the contrary could be seen in estrogen deficiency, like in telogen effluvium in women after pregnancy. As a matter of fact, estrogen is considered a protective factor for hair. Bear in mind that increased estrogen may affect other hormonal systems, and the imbalance of the hormonal system can cause hair loss. The cause of diffuse unpatterned alopecia (DUPA) in men is not clearly understood.

Does Having a Lot of Body Hair Cause Faster Balding?

Hello, i’m a 16 year old male sophomore. I’ve tried searching for the answer to my question, but no one seems to have a definite answer to it yet. Does having a lot of body hair cause baldness faster/cause baldness? I ask this because, while I may not be completely covered in hair (at least not yet…I hope not though) my legs are very very hairy.

My arms have more hair then most, but its not to out of control, and my chest is mostly clear of hair, theres nothing noticeable. But I won’t lie, I am scared to have body hair, I don’t particularly like it, and i’ve also noticed that men who have more body hair seem to have less head hair, I don’t know if this is just a coincidence, but nonetheless I am still concerned, even though I still have a full head of hair. I’m just not sure how the future will play out for my body. Though I can say that while my dads side has a lot of hairy men, no one in my family has ever truly gone bald before. However, I could be an unlucky exception.

Thanks for reading, and hopefully my question is answered!

Body hair and head hair do not relate to each other, as they are separately genetic coded. Men with hairy bodies can have hairy heads with or without balding on the scalp. If you think that you are losing hair, then visit a good hair doctor who will determine if you are losing hair on your head or not.

Does hard water cause hair loss?

Is there any lived experience, or any study, suggesting that you can experience hair fall if you wash your hair in hard water? I understand hard water as the type of naturally available water from a well or a pond that has a higher level of minerals. I am asking because I saw an ad for a hard water filter for shower heads.

No. Hard water doesn’t cause hair loss. Genes working with your DHT causes hair loss

Does Hair loss Matter for Girls? (video)

Self image is important giving us confidence if our image of ourselves is positive. A positive attitude with evident confidence is what women generally like best. We all format an image of ourselves and for some men it has to do with hair, others with body musculature and others cultivate the brain. Good women see it all as a package deal but you don’t have to look like Mr. Universe or a Gorilla head of hair as many men who have charisma attract women even without hair.

Is there a feminine hairline?

Take a look at Catherine ZetaJones‘s hairline (images on google) and you will note that the distance between the hairline and the grove between the nose (Glabella) and the distance between the tip of the nose and the chin are equal. A balanced hairline therefore is critical to femininity. Add to that the shape of the hairline on this actress as it is round. Men have V-Shaped hairlines, not rounded as a rule so the shape of the hairline controls the femininity issue as you can see in this link: https://newhair.com/before-and-after/hairlinelowering/#results how hair transplants can control both of these factors.

Do transplants thin your hair?

Hair transplant surgery tends to accelerate those hairs at the end of their life in advanced stages of miniaturization; however, this can be stopped most of the time when a person takes finasteride

Does Hair Transplantation Hurt?

Hair transplanting looks like it hurts! Does it hurt is my question? I saw the video and almost threw up. So please respond to my question! Does it hurt? Especially with at least a couple of thousand grafts! Please respond! Thank you for your time.

Yes, part of the process is painful. The first part (with anesthesia) hurts for about 1 minute. This part can be subsidized with appropriate medications to reduce the pain and possibly eliminate it if you choose this option. The more medications, the slightly more risk you may experience with side effects. Pain is also present after the surgery. If you elect to have an FUE procedure, the pain is very minimal and rarely takes any medications after surgery. If you have a strip harvesting procedure, then there is pain in the donor area, particularly more on the first night, which is easily treated with strong medications that are supplied by us. Some doctors do not like to use the word ‘pain’ because its meaning might frighten patients away, so the word discomfort is used instead. Discomfort = Pain!

On the other hand. there is also the pain of hair loss. This pain is often described by our patients as far worse than anything that they experienced in the surgery. As the old saying goes, “No Pain, No Gain” which essentially means that you need to weigh what you are willing to experience against what you are not willing to experience. A 2,000 graft procedure does not really hurt more than a 500 graft procedure. I prefer the larger procedures, because the patient has to invest less time and have less surgeries to get the final end product of their hair restoration desires.

Does hair transplant make you more attractive to women?

I have some bald areas that makes me comb hair. I’m start thinking about hair transplant. But, is there a sense of doing this? I mean, did you notice that women start paying attention to you more? Or nothing has changed, and there are no visible changes?

Hair transplants give you back your hair so the proper question is “does hair make you more attractive to women?” I personally think that if you feel better about yourself, it tends to project to others. I think that society tends to lean against balding and many women feel that that balding is some stigma. I remember producing a video a while back and going to the beach to interview many people about balding prejudices. One 22 year old woman said that she didn’t like balding men because they were old. When I asked her if someone her age was bald, she reiterated: “Didn’t you just hear me, I don’t like older men!” I got that on video and used it in some of my older work.
I also had a radio show that covered many subjects. One day on talk radio, I did a show on balding. A man called and told me that he was the Vice President of sales and that he has found that bald men can’t be trusted. He also said he was bald but was the exception to the rule because he was trustworthy. This shows prejudices of people against balding men. It’s wrong, but it’s out there. In a review of Presidential candidates since Kennedy, all of the presidents have hair yet 50% of men have balding. The conclusion of Men’s Fitness Magazine was that the public trusted men with hair and not balding men as much. It may be just enough of an edge to win. Today we have to candidates that had manipulated their hair with surgical procedures: (a) Joe Biden had hair transplant and (b) Donald Trump (it has all been said before and his hair is a major focus on his character).
