Desperation Affects Reasoning

Doctor,

You’ve said it before, and I agree with you that people suffering from hair loss, in their hopes of being delivered from their pain, are willing to believe too resolutely in products that
promise them a cure.

This article says it all: Threats To Hope: Desperation Affects Reasoning About Product Information

I hope everyone reads it and thereby removes the poor decision-making skills that sometimes accompanies their desperation.

Excellent. Thank you for sending this!

Dermotave and Minoxidil?

dear rassman sir thanks for the blog. i am 21 years old male. having hair loss for 2 years. from last 2 months i use minoxidil 2% and now my doctor suggests i use minoxidil 5%. using 5% for 10 days and i’m facing hair loss at shampooing my hair or when i apply minoxidil 5%. my doctor suggested me to use dermotave scalp application. my question is that is dermotave effecting minoxidil’s work because i use dermotave after 4 hours of applying minoxidil 5%. when i wet my hair it looks so thin.

1. will minoxidil work for the frontal and back side of head?
2. should i take propecia?
3. does propecia and monoxidil 5% regrow hair or they just help to maintain the hair i have at my head now?
4. what is the best medicine to regrow hair at the frontal and back side of head?
5. masturbation has any effect at hair loss?

i’m so depressed with my life. i lost my girlfriend and friends. they insult me. i cry n cry. i tried for commit suicide. dont know how to get my lost hair. for god’s sake please doctor help me. help me. i leave in bangladesh that is why cant get a good hair transplantation in my country..please answer my question and help me. please

Dermotave’s active ingredient is clobetasol propionate, a very powerful corticosteroid, and not to be taken for balding. I have no idea why you were prescribed this, but if it was to treat male pattern hair loss, your doctor was horribly mistaken. To answer your questions:

  1. Minoxidil may work at the front and crown, but there is no guarantees to what extent you might see regrowth.
  2. I can’t determine if you should take Propecia without seeing you. At 21 years old with early hair loss, Propecia would be a good medication if you do have male pattern baldness.
  3. They can regrow hair, but each person reacts differently.
  4. Propecia and minoxidil.
  5. No, masturbation has no effect on hair loss. See the many, many posts about this here.

It seems like you need help if you are suicidal. This type of depressive feeling, although maybe enhanced by your possible balding problem, should bring you to a good doctor to address this problem. Speak with your parents and let them know how you feel. With good medicines like Propecia, young men with early balding can be very successfully treated and transplantation is the last thing you need to have.

DermMatch and Toppik

I came across your website and was impressed with the information you provide. I am a 35 year old caucasian male with black hair who has been losing his hair for the last 6-8 years. I may eventually have a transplant and while I am saving my pennies, I would like your advice on a temporary short-term cosmetic solution to give me thicker hair. I have read about many of the botanical solutions you discussed and I know you cannot believe most of the stuff you read on most websites about hair thickening techniques. However, in at least one blog post you said that DermMatch helped improve someone’s appearance. Can you recommend which of the above topical solution, and let me know if they are safe?

Toppik and DermMatch are good products that can be looked at like cosmetics for hair. DermMarch can be found at DermMatch.com and Toppik can be found at Regrow.com.

The products work differently. DermMatch is a scalp coloring agent (like a cosmetic for the scalp), while Toppik has fibers that cling to the hair. Each have their advantages, but you need some hair for either one of them to bring value. They are relatively inexpensive, worth trying both at least once. They wash right out in the shower.

Why does my dermatologist say that no hair treatments can make things better?

I was just diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia at 33 years of age. My dermatologist told me that there are treatments available, but opened with the disclaimer that none of them will ever stop the progress of the condition, only slow it. I took home some minoxidil today and just based on quick searches, it seems like it’s super effective? Am I misinterpreting what my dermatologist told me? Is it more that, the underlying condition will continue to get worse, but I can mask it as long as I use a treatment? Also, the minoxidil I’m using is a spray. The application is pretty messy. When I spray, it seems like way too much liquid and the excess tends to run down my face. Should I spray further away or am I supposed to just get better at targeting? Also, if excess spray is constantly running down my face, will that cause weird growth or does minoxidil not work that way?

The best way to use minoxidil is with a dropper, placing it directly on the scalp. Part the hair as it is applied and what you want is the medication on the scalp, not the hair. Best to do it at night, after a hot shower when the scalp will absorb more of the minoxidil and then wash it off in the morning. This way you can use it just once a day.

A Dermatologist Just Looked at Me and Told Me I Had MPB. Is It That Easy to Make This Diagnosis?

Well, my dermatologist just looked at my hair and said I have androgenic alopecia. The thing which is troubling me is that she didn’t take any tests. And again, I don’t have a family history of hair loss. So I don’t know why I’m suffering from mbp.

See another doctor who specializes in hair loss. You can find them on the ISHRS.org website. I would look to find a local doctor from that site. You need a real examination and don’t need to live in fear.

DermaRoller

Can you please comment as to your opinion of the dermaroller? Thank you

Honestly… it looks painful. Its a roller with little spikes on it to open the scalp so that it can absorb minoxidil better. The site claims that it is pain-free though. I cannot really comment on how much of a benefit (if any) it has or if it really works, but the theory and concept seem valid.

Actually, I have one next to me as I am writing this blog. I ordered one to see it for myself. While the idea sounds good, like many good ideas, they often fail during the implementation. I’ve seen these for sale at a variety of online stores, from Amazon to Saks Fifth Avenue, so I’m sure there are plenty of users out there. If anyone has had experience using the Derma Roller, please write in to share your findings.

Dermaroller: How deep do I have to go?

Just picked up two dermarollers. One that is 0.5mm, and one that is 1.5mm. 0.5mm seems fine, peach-fuzz length, I’m fine with it. 1.5mm seems like it is going to puncture through to my cortex

Logic would dictate a depth of about 1mm as adequate as the scalp epidermis is only 0.5mm thick so needles need to go down to a depth of at least 1mm just below it to where the stem cells can get activated. Use minoxidil with it as it helps.

Depression, disease and medical conditions can accelerate hair loss

I had my third epidural in my lumber spine and within a few weeks big chunks of hair started falling out, 1 patch of hair about size of a plum. Some days it’s fine then others clumps still fall out. I now have gone totally bald and it’s really affecting my depression and anxiety. I was wondering if anyone knows if it will grow back and how long as it’s near front so can’t hide it.

You need to see a doctor about your hair loss to find out if it is caused by medical conditions such as a disease entity or if it is purely genetic hair loss which can be accelerated by stress. Once you know, if the diagnosis is genetic hair loss and assuming that you are male, the drug Finasteride can maybe stop it. If it is from another disease, then you need a diagnosis. People who have conditions like you and who have stress from your primary problem (in your case your spinal problem) can cause the genes for hair loss to kick in and accelerate the hair loss that you may get in the years to come. Without pictures, it is impossible to know what you mean that you have gone totally bald so either send photos or see a doctor to make a diagnosis.

Depression and finasteride

I have a history of severe depression. Will finasteride harm me?

With a history of depression, you need to discuss taking finasteride with your doctor. There are potential side effects with people who have a history of severe depression so great caution should be exercised when taking this drug and a close supervision of your doctor is important. I have written a post on this subject here: https://baldingblog.com/2017/05/23/finasteride-can-increase-depression-increase-actions-self-harm/
