Crusting on recipient grafts and orderly placement of hair grafts (photo)

This patient is one week after surgery and did not aggressively wash his hair so that crusts form around each graft. Crusting comes about because of leakage of serum from the recipient site. This can be washed off as it occurs with a good washing technique that we deploy for all of our patients?. It will take a few weeks for these crusts to shed with good shampooing. The grafts are secure provided that the crusts are not plucked of the grafts could come out. The grafts are placed like soldiers, all aligned in an orderly pattern. This is not how hair grows as growth is randomly distributed

Crown transplants and Swirl (photo)

The swirl area is always difficult because the hairs do not layer but rather draw one’s eye to the center of the vortex. The impacts of 4000 grafts depend upon the thickness of your hair shafts (fine, medium or coarse). The thicker the hair shafts, the better the coverage. I suspect that, looking at your result, your hair has a medium or medium-fine hair thickness. Please let me know if I am correct. The transplant was largely done in front of the swirl, but half of the upper swirl was included in the transplant. Note how difficult it is to get a tight swirl unless you put in more hair or have coarser hair. This is a nice result. Rarely does new hair appear from a hair transplant beyond 9 months. Congrats!

As an aside, look at my crown hair transplant, which was fine when it was done; however, when my hair thinned out with age, a see-through appearance showed my scalp. I had SMP done and the change was dramatic, see here; https://baldingblog.com/i-just-finished-my-smp-on-my-crown-area-today-see-before-and-after-photos/

Crown thinning in a 35 year old male

If you haven’t tried finasteride, it is worth considering as it might reverse some of this thinning. If you add minoxidil the chances are even greater for a benefit without a hair transplant.

The crown often takes more hair than other areas of a similar size because the swirl is present in the crown and the hair changes direction. The swirl draws the eye to the scalp. A 4-inch area will take anywhere between 2000-3000 grafts, depending upon the thickness of your hair shafts. More coarse hair requires less grafts when compared to fine hair.

Criticism of Strip Suture Line

This is a beautiful skin closure, but it has a problem in that the hairs inside of these sutures are being strangulated and will probably die. This will then leave a scar the width of the suture line. What we do is (1) either use surgical stables which go far back from the wound and never strangle the hairs or (2) put very fine sutures (5-0 absorbable) within 1mm or less of the edge so that we make sure that the hairs are not in the suture pull. That minimizes the scar even further.

CRISPER pigs could dotate organs to us

Using animals for organ donors have been tried for years, but cross species transplants have done very poorly over time. Now the use of CRISPER can tolerate organ donation much like Dolly the Sheep. Genetic material are used in pig cells in the early embryo and implanted in sows. The plan is to create pigs that have also been altered to make them more immunologically similar to people. In theory, this should mean transplanted organs are less prone to attack by a recipient’s immune system. This work is being done by Robin Weiss of University College London as reported in the New Scientist August 19, 2017 issue.

Crescina Hair Regrowth Formula

hello Dr Rassman,

i had a hair transplant surgery from a well recognized doctor before 7 months, without noticing very significant results.Maybe a very small change.i have been using that Crescina products for a few months for better penetration of the scalp.(the old skin fell over my scalp 2-3 months ago, after the surgery), and nowadays the skin of my scalp is clean. How long will it take for me to see good results, or shall i worry?please let me know, because i am a bit stressed.

Best Regards

It generally takes 7-8 months after a hair transplant to see enough hair length to show about 80% of the value. At about 12 months, 95% of the value of the hair transplants should be evident.

Regarding Crescina, while I am impressed by the slick product packaging and fancy animations on their site, none of the ingredients listed (including lysine, cysteine, silicon, zinc) blow me away. If its making your scalp feel cleaner and you’re not experiencing any irritation, you should continue doing as you please, but I wouldn’t look to this for hair regrowth.
