This has been done before. I remember attending a lecture which described these cells put into mice and since the direction couldn’t be controlled, the mice all died from ingrown hair infections

Clonazepam and Hair Loss

I currently take a medication called clonazepam (0.5 mg) once or twice daily as a muscle relaxer. I have been taking this medication since I was 19 or 20 (I am now 28). Could this be a cause in my thinning hair? I do not have a history of men or women balding in my family. My father has a full head (really full) along with both my grandfathers. My hairline is moving back more each year and my hair is all around is thinning and i am extremly worried. I do have a large amount of stress in my life and always have…but is it possible that hair from stress can grow back? I am extremly frusturated and baffled as to why my hair is thinning…If it is the medication, I am willing to get off of it with the consent of my doctor.
Thank you for your time.

Many drugs can cause hair loss, including Clonazepam. Before considering a drug as the source of your hair loss, you should also consider other medical causes. You should see your primary care doctor for a good examination and possible blood work to find a possible medical cause.

In address to the relationship between stress and hair loss, it is well known that stress can accelerate genetic hair loss as it unfolds over time. You discuss the movement of your hairline higher on your head, so I would wonder if this is the normal recession of maturing found in most men (the hairline goes up about 2/3rd inch in the middle and 1 or 1-1/2 inches in the corners). Sounds like you need an expert to evaluate the hair loss as well as your family doctor to assess your medication routine. The question an expert will is address is if you have a genetic component adding to the other factors causing hair loss or are you just seeing a maturing hairline in development. Do clogged pores cause hair loss?

No! Clogged pores do not cause hair loss but there are many people who believe this and will want to sell you some product or service to unplug your pores. Rip-offs are commonly presented by those who promote clogged pores.

Clogged Pore or Dead Graft at 5 Months Post-Op?

Hi Dr. Rassman,

I don’t believe this question has been addressed anywhere on your site. If I missed it, then my apologies.

I am a female who is 5 months post-op. In the past couple of days, I noticed 2 grafts “stuck” in my scalp in what had formed into a clogged pore. I could feel them when I ran my fingers through my scalp and it was obvious that they were just “there” – dead and not growing.

I gently forced them out and they came out easily. They certainly looked like the hairs I had transplanted. In other words, they were not “new” hair. Each graft had 3 hairs in it.

Is this normal or possible at 5 months post-op?

Was I wrong in pressing these things out of my scalp?

Thanks again, and God Bless you Dr. Rassman.

Some people do not shed the transplanted hairs and they are not the ones that grow. You are OK with what you did. Any hair that you remove will not damage what you have or any prospects of what you might get. Good luck. The new hair should be strong at the 8th month.

Clobex

I just renewed my persciption of propecia for anther 3 months, but my dermatologist has added clobex spray for the burning and itching that I am experiencing in the areas that I am thinning. The only odd part is, during his exam he seas nothing like flakes, excess oil, or irritation. I would just like your opinion on the clobex and or your experience with it. Thanks for all that you do, and it was cool seeing you on John and Kate plus 8…

Clobex is a strong topical steroid and I generally save prescribing that drug until I try something more mild if it is for treating eczema. Ask your doctor what he is treating you for.

Climate, Water, and Finasteride

Hi Doc,

im 19,and I have been having good hair in my home country, since i have moved in dubai,i have been noticing my hair thinning and falling. Is the climate to blame or the water?

I’ve been thinking to take some nutritional tablets like Wellman’s Tricologic, But i guess propecia would me more effective. Would it be ok to take proscar 5mg and break it into 4 pieces as suggested by you. Will it cause any side effects.

Thank you so much for your concern

Proscar/Propecia is a prescription medication. I can’t say whether you’re a candidate for taking it. That is up to a doctor to decide after you are examined.

Climate and water shouldn’t be to blame, but I don’t know what is in the water. Mercury or lead from old pipes could contaminate water, for example. Chances are, your move is coincidental to the start of your genetic hair loss, as genetics are the number one cause of hair loss in men. But again, I can’t make that call without an examination. See a doctor!

Climate changes breakthroughs

In the recent issue of the Economist, there were three significant articles that addressed significant, a really means significant, breakthroughs in three of the biggest polluting causes of Carbon Dioxide production. Worth Readings:

  1. In New Zealand a discover that a certain type of seaweed if put into the feed of livestock that produce methane gas (cows, sheep, etc…) can reduce their methane production by about 2/3rds. It is actually healthier for the cattle. This problem is one of the leading causes of CO2 gas build-up in our atmosphere and it appears that a new industry is now being built in New Zealand to produce this new seaweed in for feed-stock.
  2. In Australia, a company has figured out a way to produce concrete without the heavy CO2 product byproduct buildup in the atmosphere (may cause up to 5% of CO2 production world-wide). They have replaced the re-bar with fibers and change the chemistry of the curing process. The result is a better product that is lighter and will last longer with no significant maintenance. They are now tackling a huge bridge with this technology. It can apply to almost all concrete structures and as the advantage of no steel and therefor no rust buildup in bridges and other outside structures
  3. Ships are now installing bubble produces on the bottom of the ships. The ships ride on a layer of bubbles. This decreases the fuel consumption by reducing friction and has the benefit of reduction of costs for fuel of between 5-10%. Most cruise ships are now going in this direction and many of the commercial ships are moving in this direction as well.

This means that maybe our children and their children will have a better world.

Cleopatra’s cure for balding

Cleopatra’s cure for balding consisted of scorched crushed mice paste and crushed horses teeth, deer marrow, reed bark, and honey massaged into the scalp. Has anyone tried it? We have been looking for a cure for balding for a long, long time.

Cleft Lip, What Shall of Do?

I have a scar on the upper side of the lip and I need to get a hair implant/transplant. I’m nearly 18 years old and I have a beard/mustache and the scar doesn’t help at all. Any help or advice will be appreciated

A hair transplant into the scar will completely hide the scar. This is an excellent solution. If the scar is small and you don’t have to grow a mustache or can’t because you don’t have enough mustache hair, then a highly specialized cosmetic tattoo called SMP can hide it. You can actually do have both SMP and a mustache transplant for the absolute best result, see https://scalpmicropigmentation.com/

What Classification of Hair Loss Am I Showing?

Although I do not see your eyebrows lifted to show the wrinkles on your forehead, I believe that you have a Classic Mature Hairline. This is what I achieve with a hair transplant and my patients who get it are thrilled.
