Chin Hair Loss

There are no scars in the area but on the left side of my chin about 3 months ago I developed a bald spot about the size of a quarter. there are some very light hairs but not growing. Also I have developed smaller spots under the chin line. I am on no medication and my hair is a very dark brown.

These balding spots may be a sign of alopecia areata. This is NOT a diagnosis, just a possibility. You need to see a doctor (dermatologist) to get a real diagnosis.

Children From Smoking Households Suffer From Heart Problems Later In Life

“Study shows that children exposed to smoking at home have more deposits in the carotid artery as adults. Passive smoking is known to endanger health. This is particularly so for the offspring of smokers. Children who are exposed to their parents’ smoking have a considerably higher risk of developing cardiovascular diseases as adults. That is the main result of the “Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study” presented in the Journal “Circulation”.”

My Child Has A Weak Hair Line. Should I Be Concerned?

I noticed my son has a weak hairline at the temples. it’s hard to find information on the internet, but from what I gather, this could be his vellus hairs that will be replaced by terminal hairs at puberty.. Not sure if I’m being overly observant here, but I wanted to make sure it wasn’t an issue.

Hair lines are diverse and children’s hair line are no exception. Some babies are born without much hair and grow to have thick lush hair. Anything is possible and an overly observant parent may also be possible.

Follow up with your child’s pediatrician and express your concerns. There are other medical conditions that can impact hair as well. Please don’t let this last statement be a launching point for further Google search and a source for more confusion. The best advice is follow up with your doctor.

Child Hair Loss — It’s Not Fungus, So What Is It?

My daughter is 9 years old and I just found out she has several bald spot in the back of her head . We took her to the peditrician doctor, they scrape the bald spot to get it test. The lab just call me and they said that it wasn’t fungus nor ring worm. Can you please give me some information on what it could be? I’m very worry, please response back to me ASAP. Thank you.

I can only tell you what is not (fungus or ringworm). I cannot diagnose your daughter’s condition on the Internet without any examination. I would take her to see a dermatologist so that doctor can take the next step in the diagnosis. She may need a biopsy rather than skin scraping. There are many differential possibilities, such as alopecia areata, but that diagnosis has to be made by a physician who can examine your daughter in person.

Child Got Too Close to a Candle, Burned Scalp in 2 Spots

My 3 yo Grandaughter has 2 spots on her scalp where she had gotten too close to a candle and burned the hair. The spots did blister and have healed nicely. They are still red-pink in color. Is there a chance that hair will grow back in these areas?

If the time since injury is within a year or so, it might come back. Otherwise, see an expert and a simple approach with hair transplants might easily solve the problem. Of course, a 3 year old requires special considerations and I am not suggesting a surgery. Start off by getting an opinion from an expert.

Child Attacked By Dog, Lost Most of Her Scalp

A friend’s 3 year old grand daughter was attacked by a dog and she lost most of her scalp. What remains is a small portion on the right side of her head, and the rest was replaced with skin grafts from her back. What kind of hair replacement / regrowth options are available for her? If it makes any difference in treatment options she is african-american.

Everything depends upon how much good scalp she has left and the amount of good hair that remains. If, for example, a person lost 20% of their scalp (replaced by skin grafts), then the other 80% could possibly be stretched to cover the missing part, and in an ideal situation the stretched skin (that contains hair), might produce enough cover with artful surgery. If however, the proportions are the reverse (80% of the scalp was lost and replaced by skin grafts), the likelihood is that there may not be enough hair or scalp to move around to cover the defects. I would like to see a set of good pictures of her. If the child’s family does not have the means to pay for surgery, this can be done with minimal to no charge for those who could not afford this type of work. First, a doctor needs to make a careful examination, starting off with sending pictures if she is outside of California and can not be seen by me in person.

Child Alopecia

My Grand-daughter has been told she has alopecia she’s only 4 years old. It started at her neck line in the back, it has now started coming out in the front. She has food allegies and she is on a medication for asthma. Can anything be done to get her hair to grow back?

There are a series of genetic alopecias that show up in young children. IF she has one of these condition, she may go on to develop Alopecia Totalis, which in effect causes all of the hair to fall out. This would include eyebrows as well. She needs to be worked up by experts in this field. Your dermatologist should be able to point you to those experts, but if he can not, send me an email (found on the Contact page).

Chest pain with minoxidil

Been feeling a little pressure on the left side of my chest the last days, I’ve been on minoxidil for almost 2 months now and it just started. Now I’m not claiming these sides are common or anything, if you’re starting minox you shouldn’t be discouraged by my results. My question is, do these tend to subside or get worse as time goes by, and did anyone experienced the same?

Chest pain when taking minoxidil is a problem, and maybe you should see your doctor to make sure that you don’t have heart problems. Minoxidil is a hypotensive agent and is known to cause a drop in blood pressure.
