Can request # of grafts?

I am thinking about getting a hair transplant. Most places that I have consulted with recommend me getting between 1200-1800 grafts. I understand that the more grafts that I get, the higher they are paid. However, I am concerned about a few things. I am concerned how my donor area will look afterwards and I don’t want to lose donor area hair if the doctor did not do a great job. How would I know how many hairs were actually transplanted? I wouldnt mind doing another transplant if the first time was a good job. What percentage of those harvested get transplanted? thanks for advice.

Of course you can request a certain number of grafts, but you want to ask the doctor what makes sense when you take such a step. I believe strongly in a Master Plan as hair loss is a progressive process and the donor supply of permanent hair is limited. I refer to this as a Hair Bank where you can only make withdrawals. You need to find a doctor who believes strongly in a Master Plan, as hair loss is a progressive process and the donor supply of permanent hair is limited. What has to be done is to: (1) predict your short term hair loss pattern, (2) estimate your long term worst-case hair loss pattern and (3) give you quantitative number for how many hairs (grafts) you have in your hair bank. As you make withdrawals, it is a one-way process. I also like to give my patients a plan for surgery and an estimate of what they can expect in terms of result. I spend a lot of time with my patients just in the consultation and then similar amounts of time are spent prior to the surgery. We give hair washes after the surgery to make sure that there is no crusting so that my patients can go out in public immediately after the surgery (see here: https://baldingblog.com/one-day-post-op-with-photo/ and here: https://baldingblog.com/post-op-photos-6-days-after-3320-grafts/) . These patients can go back to work quickly using what hair they have to cover up the surgical recipient sites. We also use a special tape to prevent swelling in the few people that get it.

Can I repair my 1983 hairline which is very pluggy?

There are a number of ways to fix this problem. Since I was the first doctor to perform large sessions of small grafts, I must have fixed hundreds of such patients. The first way to address this is to remove the pluggy grafts provided that there are not too many of them. If they take up the entire frontal area, then it is best to have another hair transplant and overwhelm the pluggy grafts creating a new nature hairline. These pugs can be s source of donor hair as well, as the surgeon can take hair using FUE techniques from the plubs to thin them out. These hairs can be relocated to soften and normalize the look. Longer hair works better than shorter hair once this process is complete. Here is a patient that had terrible plugs and how I fixed fixed it with a series of photos and linkes for you to follow: https://baldingblog.com/2005/10/07/repairing-pluggy-transplant-with-photos/

Can I Regrow My Temples With Propecia or Rogaine?

This is probably a dumb question to ask but I don’t understand balding. I have thinning hair and possibly new regrowth on my temples. I’ve read that your hair thins out slowly until that area stops producing hair.

So my question is should I be expecting finasteride, and minoxidil to help keep those thin hairs and possibly thicken them or should I be expecting that area to be bald shortly. There’s so much conflicting information when it comes to thinning hair that I’ve read online and I’d really just like to know if I’m going to keep those hairs or lose them so I can stop stressing over it.

I’m a 22 year old male if it makes any difference.

Hair loss or balding in men is mainly due to genetic predisposition/ inheritance. It may not follow an exact father to son path but it is nevertheless a genetic trait. There are medications such as Propecia or Rogain to address the genetic male pattern balding and it works better in some men. However it does not stop or reverse the balding completely. Eventually your genetic balding pattern will take shape. Many men take these medication to slow the process down and some have great results. The bad news is that the medications do not work for the front hair line or front corner / temple hair loss in (what I would guess to be) roughly 95% of men. They also do not work in the temple peaks. Only a hair transplant offers this solution.

Can I put minoxidil on my grafts to make them grow better?

Minoxidil is not effective to stimulate recipient area hair growth. I studied this on 50 patients with minoxidil on 1/3rd of the head and none on the other side. Both sides grew equally fast and well. What is the best way to get good growth is to have an excellent surgeon and surgical team do your hair transplant. There is nothing that will stop a good hair transplant from growing.

Can I puck out the bad grafts on my hairline?

If you keep plucking the grafts and sooner or later the hair will not return. In those grafts that you pluck you will eventually kills these hairs. We call this traction alopecia but it may take quite a few pluckings to kill these hairs.

Can Propranolol Cause Hair Loss? I Use It for Anxiety at 10mg/Day.

My son takes this drug for stressful times. I thought that you were suggesting that you wanted to use if for treating your hair loss. I know that Propranolol can, in rare circumstances, brings on genetic balding or makes it worse if that is what you have. If it helps you, then, by all means, use it.

Can Propecia Stunt Growth?

Can Propecia taken by mid-teen guys stunt height growth?

There are some teenagers who take Propecia (finasteride) under the care of their doctors, but it is generally not prescribed to teenagers. The effects of finasteride on developing teens is not clear and should probably not be used in those who are still in growth mode (usually under 17-18 years old). It is theoretically possible that it may stunt growth during the puberty years, as it interferes with testosterone conversion into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is one of the many hormones that is involved with secondary sex characteristics such as beard, chest, and pubic hair.

Can Propecia Regrowth Come in Cycles?

First off, thanks doctor for all the help you have given. Your site is very helpful.

I actually have a one question and also a comment about propecia.

Firstly, I have been experiencing balding at my hairline for about a year and a half. It hasn’t gotten too bad yet and is moving quite slowly. I started on propecia about 6 months ago and have recently seen a slowing in the shedding of my hairline. Also I have seen a slight thickening in the hair in right at the hairline. The hairs that are growing are small and kind of thin though, so I was wondering if hair regrowth with propecia can come in cycles. Will it start as smaller miniaturized hairs, then the next cycle will they be thicker? Just wondering if this was common for the drug in your experiences.

My second comment was on the side effects of the drug. About a month after I started I noticed drastic sexual side effects. My sex drive was still there, but I could not sustain an erection. I cut back to half a pill a day and that helped at first, but once again I fell into that same situation. Recently though I’ve notice just as drastic of an improvement though. It almost seems over night the sexual side effects went away. I have even gone back to a whole pill and have no noticeable side effects. Is it normal for the side effects to go away so suddenly? Also, could such strong side effects mean that the pill is working well on me? Not that I’m complaining, just interested to know. I am glad I stuck it out though, seems it just took time for my body to adjust.

Thanks for everything in advance!

Many people who get a decreased libido can work it out the way you did. Hair loss comes in cycles, but Propecia (finasteride 1mg) does not work in that fashion. At times, you may find the hair loss will occur even when you are on the drug, and that hair loss occurs in bursts. The focus here was on libido and hopefully your libido problem has been solved. With regard to other side effects, they tend to occur and stay around while you are on the drug, like decreased volume of your ejaculate after orgasm or breast tenderness. Of course, breast pain could be brought on by other causes as well (even breast lumps, although very rarely from Propecia), so if you get them you should see your doctor.

Can Propecia Regrow Hair Behind the Hairline?

I know Propecia won’t work to regrow a hairline but can it help regrow hair behind a hairline like 1cm behind it? Since my hairline is still intact but behind it is where the drama lies.

It can, but each person will react slightly different to medication, so regrowing hair there might be rare. It has a better chance of maintaining hair that is left, though regrowth isn’t completely out of the question. The younger you are and the shorter time since the hair is showing the impact of balding and thinning, the better the chance of reversal.

Can Propecia Keep Miniaturizing Hairs at the Temples from Falling Out?

My temples receded from my highest wrinkle brow to 1.75 inches. You said a mature hairline temples are up to 1.5 inches away from that wrinkle. So I’m slightly more which is fine by me. But around those corners there is a piece of short hairs, they seem to have the same thickness as a lot of my front hairs but they look like they will fall of since I assume they are miniaturized. After that my temples will be about 2-2.2 inches receded which will be too much. I just began Propecia and am almost 22 years old, can Propecia stop those hairs from falling out and even help them grow normal again? But I’m also taking Propecia because I have frontal and mid anterior probs as well but early stage.

Propecia will slow or stop the hair loss in most men of your age. Consider sending me photos (will be kept private) and I will give you an opinion, but you should consider getting your hair mapped out for miniaturization to determine if these hairs at that exact location are really miniaturizing.
