Can I Tell If I Have MPB By Pulling?

I was wondering how to actually notice hair loss. When I was 25 I remember visibly seeing hairs in the shower and in my sink. Since then I have slightly receded but that is it. I am now 31 and I notice one or two hairs when I put gel in my hair and a few on the floor in my bathroom. I also notice I can slightly tug a few hairs out every once and a while. It just as easy to pull them from my sideburns as the top of my head. No one on either side (first and second generation) is bald in the back of the head. All related men do have recession and slight thinning (which I think is common). It looks like pattern 2. Is the fact that I notice the hair in my sink, tub and by pulling a sign of hair loss or MPB?
Thank you!!

No, you cannot tell if you have male pattern balding (MPB) by simply pulling on your hair. It is normal to lose 100 hairs a day. You may be able to see MPB pattern under a hair densitometer, which is a special microscope for the hair, by demonstrating miniaturization of hair. To make the actual diagnosis, the patterns of thinning and miniaturization can be mapped out for predictive purposes.

Can I Take Medication After a Hair Transplant?

Dr first this site is AWESOME and I really wish I would have read all this before I underwent my transplant 2 weeks ago…

My question is and I know you had questions simular but I’d like to add a question to it. Transplant was 2 weeks ago, and now I’m taken Terbinafine 250 MG AKA Limisil for small amount of fungus on my toes, IF, I were to see myself losing hair will taken Propecia cancel out the hair loss and bring it back to it’s normal state? Do you think it’s too soon to take Lamisal just having the surgery just 2 weeks ago? I am really trying to undertsand how Lamisil in the 1st place could cause hair loss in some!?

I am just so paranoid cause I just spent all this money on a hair transplant and dont want to LOSE any of it, and it also a catch 22 cause I don’t want yellow nails either. Thanks in Advance

Side effects from medications (except steroids) that produce hair loss are generally rare. Those people who take anti-fungal medications do not have a problem with hair loss as a rule, but you need to discuss this with your prescribing doctor who probably has more experience with these medications than I do. I tell my patients that they can take all of their medications after a hair transplant and will frequently let them take their medications before and after the surgery.

Can I Take Finasteride Without It Impacting My Further Growth at 19?

I’m 19 and a late bloomer, if people were to look at me they would probably guess that I’m 16. My hairline has been receding for a year and I’m around a NW1 with the whole front of my hairline now miniaturized. Because I’m probably not done with puberty, is it a terrible idea to go on fin right now? Has anyone else who isn’t fully developed gone on fin and continued to develop? I’m just in a hard place right now because my hairline seems to be deteriorating so rapidly but at the same time I don’t want to stunt my body’s development. Any insight would be appreciated.

I have prescribed finasteride to men as young as 16 and have not seen growth stunted.

Can I Take Finasteride Temporarily to Protect from Shock Loss?

Hypothetically can Finasteride for shock loss be discontinued after a period of time has elapsed after the Hair Transplant operation and the risk of shock loss has receded?

Yes, you can take finasteride temporarily to just protect against shock hair loss. I generally tell patients to take it for 8 or so months to bridge the gap between the transplant procedure and growth from the new grafts.

Can I take dutasteride and finasteride?

How long do I have to wait to see the benefits of dutasteride and finasteride, both taken daily?

Sometimes these medications don’t work. It takes a full year to see benefits. Taking both dutasteride and finasteride just increases your potential side effects. Twice a week dutasteride is fine by itself. Check with your doctor

Can I take Bicalutamide instead of fin for my hair loss?

Bicalutamide is a therapeutic chemotherapy agent with the following side effects. Why would you not take a safe and effective medication like finasteride approved for hair loss by the FDA
  • hot flashes;
  • pain in your back, pelvis, or stomach;
  • swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet;
  • increased night-time urination;
  • weakness, dizziness; or.
  • nausea, diarrhea, constipation.

Can I Take a Half Dose of Propecia if I See Side Effects?

Hi, Doctor Rassman,
Im a 27 year old male,my hair has been thinning since I was 23.I still got hair on top and at the front but is thinning on the crown. After tried herbal remedies like Provillus (waste of time and money, honestly) and tried different topical lotions like Revivogen( the same as Provillus,waste of time and money.) Please guys don’t even think about this kind of products,they don’t work!!!

I just decided to try Propecia after a year of research,Im still bit scared about the side effects but I think I’m going to give it a go and see if it works for me. My question is: is possible to take a dose of 0.5 daily in case I get any of the side effects? Is this safe an effective?

Thanks

You should take 1mg of Propecia (per your doctor’s prescription) and if you develop side effects, you can cut the dose… but going the other way makes no sense. 99% of people do not get sexual side effects addressing sexual performance. Why would you assume you are in the 1% group of the population?

Can I Strengthen My Hair to Prevent Hair Loss from Relaxer Chemicals?

I am an African American female and experiencing hair loss. I currently use home relaxers on my hair because it’s easier to manage. What can I do to strengthen my hair to help prevent the hair loss? Thanks

Keep in mind that I am a hair transplant doctor. With that said, from my point of view there is not much you can do to strengthen hair. Despite all the hype, there really is no secret formula. Use what works for you. Eat a healthy diet. Minimize chemical exposure to your hair. I generally will not name supplements and shampoos to give credibility on how to make one’s hair stronger. If this isn’t satisfactory, a hair stylist might be able to recommend some products he/she is likely ready to sell you.

Can I Stop Taking Propecia?

I have been taking Propecia since my early 20’s and I am now 39. My crown was thinning back in the day and that’s what inspired me to start the drug. My brother is totally bald but my frontal hairline seems to be in near perfect shape all these years later. I am considering stopping taking it because I’m worried about the long term effects and I think as I age my hormones may change and I’ll develop issues from it. In your humble opinion at this point do you believe propecia is keeping my hairline intact? I’ve read that propecia rarely works on hairlines and I’ve heard you say it’s a tug of war between genetics and propecia. I just think I wouldn’t experienced some form of loss by now. The crown is ok but not what it was 6-7 years ago. You thoughts?

catch up

Please speak with your doctor for these issues. In general if you stop Propecia you can ‘have catch up hair loss’ where the hairs you kept or regrew over the time you took Propecia, may fall out on stopping the medication. Long term use of Propecia from studies show no adverse effects. There was a study that show high dose (finasteride 5mg) can even lower the risk of prostate cancer and many doctors believe that this benefit extends to the 1mg dose, but this particular point was not studied and is just conjecture.

Can I Stop Taking Propecia and Continue with Minoxidil?

I am 21 with genetic hair loss.

I am taking propecia and minoxidil 12.5% + Azelaic Acid. If treatment works after, can I stop propecia and carry on with minoxidil 12.5% + Azelaic Acid?

As I’ve noted before, if you have any results from Propecia (finasteride 1mg) and stop taking it, you’ll see those results reverse. I’m not sure how long you’ve been using these medications, but I hope you talk to your prescribing physician before adjusting your treatments.

Even at the rather high 12.5% strength, minoxidil doesn’t maintain the benefits of Propecia (and vice versa). This is usually why I recommend starting with one medication and then adding another later, so you can get a better idea of which drug is giving you the best benefits. If you started both at the same time and decided to stop taking Propecia, you’re gambling that your visible results are just from minoxidil.
