Use Minoxidil After Transplant?

Hi,
I am 6 weeks post op. I received 1500 fu’s and earlier punch graft work repaired. Other than some minor shock loss in the donor area, I seem to be healing fine for 6 weeks. My question is this; I have never used Propecia or Minoxidil before. I am curious if 5% Minoxidil would speed up and/or enhance grafts. It states that Minoxidil only works in the vertex area. Would that not apply to recipient area on the top of my head? After all, the grafts were taken from below the vertex. Also, I’m using Mederma for scarring from old plug extraction on crown. Is it wise or safe to use Mederma and Minoxidil at the same time? I have purchased the Minoxidil, but have not used it yet. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

The donor hair will not be affected by Minoxidil so I do not recommend its use after a hair transplant. I generally put people on Propecia if they are young and in the balding process at almost any stage, as hair transplants can accelerate any hair loss process that is active. Mederma is an over-the-counter herbal medication that is recommended for (1) old scars, and (2) new scars. Its claims include that it softens the scars. It has no defined scientific benefit that I know of. I suspect that it is safe, but I do not have first hand knowledge about it.

I use a dye on my hair I purchased in the grocery store about a month ago, and lost a lot of hair, what should I do?

Dyes can produce chemical burns and ‘kill’ hairs permanently. If it does not grow back in 6 months, then you may have produced a chemical burn to your hair follicles and they may not grow back. If there is going to be a recovery, the hair cycle usually kicks in and starts growing within about 6 months or less after the injury or earlier. See a specialist either now or certainly in 6 months?

Ursolic acid for male-pattern hair loss?

Any idea if ursolic acid can help with male-pattern hair loss? In the study below, it says it reduced DHT.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22266360/

Ursolic acid appears to be an interesting possible treatment for a variety of conditions including an enlarged prostate, inflammatory diseases and some cancers however it is not approved for clinical use. Although it is easy to extrapolate its effects on prostate hypertrophy and its relationship to hair loss, there is no proof that this has value nor that it is safe for the treatment of hair loss.

Updated Propecia Info Says There’s Erection Difficulty After Discontinuing Treatment

Dr. Rassman

You have always been against the idea that propecia side effetcs may be permanent, and I saw you telling many people that the side effects as released by Merck are temporary and have been approved by the FDA. now it seems that there is an updated Prescription Information for Propecia. you can check it yourself at this link

among the most important changes are (in section 4, “Possible Side Effects”): “Persistent difficulty having an erection after discontinuation of treatment.”

Anything to comment? Thanks

Interesting, but the information lists that under the heading “Frequency unknown“, which leads me to believe it must be extremely rare. I have no information on this and have never seen it in my practice. I wonder about psychological impact on those that are affected.

The PDF you linked to appears to be for the Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Sweden markets… and Merck doesn’t seem to have the same information in their US pamphlet. I really could only speculate as to why that is the case, though.

Update: Reversing Frontal Hair Loss with Propecia (with Photos)

We originally profiled this patient last year to show his remarkable frontal hair regrowth from Propecia… and now that another year has passed, the results are even more impressive!

This patient had no hair restoration surgery. The results you see are from taking Propecia (finasteride 1mg) daily, and although the amount of regrowth he has should be considered rare, it is exciting for the patient and I wanted to share his photos below. Click to enlarge.

Unwanted Facial Hair from Minoxidil

(male)
Hi, i use minoxidil 5% for about 5 months now with really great result !

But now, i see some facial hair over my eyes and over my eyebrows… Does this unwanted hair with continue to growth with time ? should i stop or simply remove it with laser or electrolysis ?

thanks

Those unwanted hairs may be a side effect from topical minoxidil. I would consult with a doctor before doing anything drastic like laser hair removal or electrolysis. I would guess that if it was a side effect from minoxidil, those hairs should shed after you stop applying the medication.

Another point to consider is always wash your hands after using minoxidil on your scalp. It’s possible that you still had some medication on your hands and then touched your face.

Unusual shedding after a hair transplant (photo)

So I had my hair transplant done on Jan 2nd. I had virtually no shedding in the past 1 months but I started using topical Minoxidil a week ago and all of a sudden got dandruff in the transplanted area. My doctor told me to scrub it off and I did and gave him some after pictures with some hair down the drain. My questions:

  1. I did this after 4 weeks. I was told it takes 2 weeks for the hair to root. Did I accidentally peel off some hair or was the shedding at the same time?

  2. How do confirm what I shed was legit or I accidentally messed up transplant?

I’m worried. I have had no problems so far and was going so far with maybe a hair or two in the drain. Pictures attached! If it’s just shedding it couldn’t have been timed worse. Stats: 2100 transplant count Age: 36

Scrubbing your transplanted area after 12 days will not cause loss of the implanted hair stem cells that, I expect, will eventually grow. Starting minoxidil could induce some shedding, which tells you that the drug may be working to develop new hair in the non-transplanted areas. I believe that you don’t really have a problem.

Unusual Response to Finasteride

I need your advice regarding reflex hyperandrogenicity. I went on Propecia in March of this year. The doctor who prescribed me the drug told me to come back in 6 months for an evaluation. Within probably two weeks I started to experience what I thought was the usual shedding. I was obviously concerned and turned to discussion boards where I found countless responses indicating that the shedding, regardless of the severity, was just part of the process.

I wanted to believe that that was the case so I carried on. I was (and still am) experiencing hundreds of lost hairs every day, increased (though admittedly not drastically) acne, increased sebum production, increased sexual function for about two and a half months. Finally, I went to see the original doctor who prescribed it and another doctor. They both confirmed that this is not anything close to normal. Actually the second doctor (not the prescriber) told me that he had prescribed Propecia to thousands of patients over the years and he had seen maybe a dozen patients who responded like this.

Obviously, I am distraught. I don’t know what to do. I am one week off Propecia and still shedding like crazy. I have lost maybe 60% of my hair. The loss is all over my head but it’s worse on the crown and the sides (I NEVER experienced loss on the sides before Propecia). Both doctors told me cautiously that some of it may grow back eventually. The sad thing is that my male pattern baldness wasn’t even that bad. I was losing my hair for sure. But I turn 40 next month and I probably would not have got to this point for a good number of years.

Most of the hairs I’m losing are thick dark hairs and most have NO bulb on them.

So my questions are:

(i) Given your experience, do you believe that some of my hair may grow back?

(ii) Is there anything I can do, any product I can use, to increase my chances of getting my hair back?

Shedding is not an unusual report for the first few months after starting finasteride, but it almost always stops and most patients find less hair loss after a few months. One family member of mine, did have an increase sex drive after starting the Finasteride. I have never seen a report that Finasteride kicked off massive hair loss as you are reporting. I would expect that, considering your age, stopping the drug might work in your favor and reverse the shed, but frankly, I am not sure. You should see a doctor who has the HAIRCHECK instrument to measure your hair bulk and then follow you over a year to report what is actually measured with regard to your hair loss.
