We’re taking a day off for an extended New Year holiday weekend, but we’ll be back on Monday in 2011!

We’re taking some more time off for the New Year holiday, but we’ll be back on Monday, January 4.
Thanks to everyone for making 2009 such a great year for BaldingBlog! Here’s to a fantastic 2010!

Hello Dr.
I am 21 years old and i have been using Rogain and Propecia for a long time( about a year). Unfortunately I have not had a positive result from these medicines. I lost hair since I was 15. I am norwood 1 or 2. I have heard about an oil called Rejuvenating Oil including oils from plants such as:Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Arachis Hypogaea (Peanut) Oil, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Juglans Regia (Walnut) Seed Oil, BHT, Cananga Odorata Flower Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Gardenia Florida Oil, Geranium Maculatum Oil, and also chemicals such as: Chlorphenesin, Amyl Cinnamal, Benzyl Alcohol, Benzyl Benzoate, Benzyl Salicylate, Citral, Citronellol, Coumarin, Eugenol, Farnesol, Geraniol, Hydroxycitronellal, Isoeugenol, Limonene, Linalool
Are these oils really helpful ?

No, the oils probably do not help with your hair loss. Of course, you’re welcome to try the product out for yourself, but I don’t see anything in that list that will cause your hair to regrow.
My question to you is why did you use Rogaine (minoxidil) and Propecia (finasteride) when you classify yourself as a Norwood 1? Plus, I’m not sure what you’re looking for as far as results that have lead you to believe there was no positive result. Are you expecting complete regrowth, or do you know that just seeing the hair loss halt is also considered a positive benefit? As you can see, after reading your email I’m left with more questions than answers. There is something wrong with your logic, and unfortunately without an exam and better medical history, there isn’t much I can offer you.
I’ve ignored all polls up until now and will rely on the statistics from the past US Presidential elections to call this one for Barack Obama (and a day before the election, no less). Some may say, “But Dr Rassman, clearly the polls are showing Obama has a gigantic lead anyway!” … and to those people, I can only point out that it’s entirely because of his beautiful hairline. Ignore tax policy, ignore social programs, ignore foreign policy — this election is 100% hair related. People always vote for the hairiest, right?

We’re taking a couple days off for the New Year celebration, but will be back on Wednesday, January 2nd with more hair loss questions and answers!
2007 was a very good year for BaldingBlog, as the site saw substantial growth in visitor traffic and number of questions answered. I’m pleased that I was able to help so many this year. I believe we published somewhere around 1700-1800 posts in the past 12 months! It’ll be hard to top 2007, but here’s to a great 2008!
What is the scratch test you mentioned in a previous post?

I refer to the test as one used to discover a histamine positive skin type. The simple test is done by scratching the skin with a finger nail (for example) with moderate pressure, but not enough to cut into the skin. The skin will develop a red-streak within a minute surrounding the finger nail scratch. This, I believe, is local release of vasodilators at the skin edge. I have noted in my practice that people who react to the scratch with a red streak are the ones who tend to remain more pink after a hair transplant. When I transplant these patients, I will often use copper peptide dressing, which I have found gets the pink out sooner in these patients. I have had patients who were positive to the scratch test who were not treated after their first surgery and then when I did their surgery a second or third time, the addition of (1) copper peptide dressings after surgery and (2) the use of high dose steroids at surgery has helped minimize the pink discoloration over time. My view of copper peptide is not shared by many doctors, suggesting that what I observed have not been their observations and their experience.
Dear Dr.
Link: Study Shows Saw Palmetto Extract Does Not Improve BPH Symptoms
It says: There is no different between Saw Palmetto and Placebo. if it’s correct, then maybe there is absolutely no benefit for inhibiting 5-alpha-r/DHT? Please tell us your comment. thank you.
I believe if you search BaldingBlog over the years, we have always maintained that saw palmetto is just an herb and there is no scientific proof of its efficacy (for MPB or BPH). Informal studies, differing dosages, and duration of use have all been issues with clearing up once and for all if saw palmetto does anything to treat hair loss.
Regardless, as I have said too many times here, “Buyer beware”.

That is a reasonable number of grafts. If you have very fine hair, then more grafts would have been better because fine hair does not have much bulk to it. However, there appears to be areas where the growth is underperforming at this time, so wait out another 2 months. If at that time the area has not filled in, go back and see your doctor.
