Thin Pubic Hair from Thyroid Disease

Dr:

I was diagnosed 10 years ago with thyroid disease. At that time, my hair came out terribly. I have remained on a maintenance dosage of Armour because my THS levels are always within lower limits of the normal range of functioning. Most of my hair, over the years has grown back, but it does not have the same thickness. Also, the top is thinner than the rest.

Additionally, my pubic hair thinned out years ago. However, it never grew back, and it began to gray. Is there something that can be done to thicken my pubic hair, stop the graying, and thicken the hair in the top of my head?

Thanks

The use of hair dyes is the only treatment for graying. What you are reporting with the hair in other parts of your body is a consequence of thyroid disease over the long term in some patients.

Thickness of Transplanted Hair

Why is the hair from the second transplant just one year ago finer than the hair from my first hair transplant 18 years ago?

The new hair compared to your transplanted hair from 18 years ago should be the same as the hair in the back of your head. Check each area with a micrometer and see if they match.

Thicker Body Hair from Propecia, Forehead Hair from Minoxidil?

Hey Doc,

In the thirteen months I’ve been taking propecia I’ve noticed that the hair on the rest of by body has been growing at a much faster rate. I’ve also noticed that in the the four months I’ve been using rogaine, small hairs have been growing on my forehead and my eyebrows are definitely getting much thicker. Is there a correlation between them or am I just paranoid? This seems odd to me since nobody in my family is as hairy as I am at the moment Also, how long does rogaine usually last for before its effects begin to die out? I’m a 21 year old male with middle-eastern background.

Thank You.

Propecia (finasteride) blocks DHT. DHT is known to be responsible for secondary male characteristics, such as body hair. At least in theory, if you block DHT you would have less body hair. I have heard and seen on several occasions patients stating they got less body hair after a year of taking Propecia, but you would be the first one to say you have more body hair as a direct result of it. This can also be coincidence as well.

If anything, I would suspect that Rogaine (minoxidil) is causing body hair growth and is responsible for the growth of forehead hair. You must be either applying it to your forehead or absorbing some of it into your body, causing a systemic effect. Another thought is that you are only 21 years old and some men continue to mature in their secondary sex characteristics (body hair, for example) into their mid 20’s. I realize you are trying to make sense of all this even by comparing yourself to your family members, but sometimes it just is the way it is.

Thick, Diffuse Hairs On An Otherwise Balding Scalp

Hi Dr. Rassman,

First off, I would like to say you have an excellent site here and it has been the source of many of my answers while I suffered with my paranoia of hairloss.

I wanted to ask about a type of hairloss I noticed while talking to a person. The man exhibited diffuse baldness and was almost completely bald on top however all over the top of his head he had a few thick hairs that were buzzed down. All the hairs that I could see were all thick. Also, his hairline was completely unharmed. It was covered in thick hairs from left to right. I was wondering if this is normal MPB or not since from my understanding in the diffuse form of MPB, all the hairs slowly thin out on top of the head. I know it is normal to see some thick hairs among thin hairs in someone who’s going bald, but this guy had only thick hairs on top of his head.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Some men who bald can have a persistent frontal hairline. Some never go bald in the front. These are a few exceptions to the classic Norwood patterns. You can also have thick (non miniaturized) hairs on balding areas. It is just that the proportion of thick to thin are different.

These are elevated grafts immediately after the hair transplant (photos)

Can you image going out in public with this look on the left? The patient on the left is not our patient but compare our patient on the right and see the difference. We are obsessed with an undetectable look beginning when you leave our office. What this doctor did, was to leave his grafts elevated. These elevated grafts will remain visible for weeks after the surgery and they will crust over. I have seen patient photos showing this to last up to a month. I look at it as a month of hiding because of a poorly executed hair transplant. Both of these patients had the same hair transplant distribution

There Was A Fix For Hair Loss With Gold Wire Back in 1914

The Scientific American reported a fix for hair loss in August 1914. Let me share it with you. “A gold wire 1/500 inch in diameter is bent to form a loop barely visible to the naked eye, which is then threaded with a woman hair of the desired color and from 8 to 12 inches long. The wire is introduced into a Pravaz hypodermic needle and then bent and cut, forming a tiny hook. The needle is inserted normally, twisted and carefully withdrawn. The doubled hair is anchored by the hook in the subcutaneous tissue. As many as 50,000 hairs may be required. ”

That amounts to 15 grains of gold. Someone made money out of this.
