Increased Shedding with Propecia Use – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

Hello Folks,
I have been using finasteride 2MG daily and found no issues related to Sex drive. However what I find interesting is that the hair shedding has increased to a very high extent i.e more before using drug. Is this normal? i found that this is due to movement of hairs from telogen to anagen phase. Should I stop the drug? Increase the dose?
Thanks

I have no patients that have complained of shedding from Propecia, yet I have been asked about it in emails via this blog a few times. I probably have more patients on Propecia than any doctor in California, so I find it interesting to hear about the shedding problem that is reported to me here. My best advice is to continue to take the drug. What you might be seeing is some accelerated hair loss in its normal cycle, which hopefully will be addressed as the drug kicks in.

  1. I don’t mean to question your knowledge or experience in any way but have read about a difference in shedding rates from several sources and have experienced it myself. In my case accelerated shedding began to take place about a month or so into treatment and lasted approximately three months.I now have the remnants of the initial hair plus almost my entire scalp is experiencing growth of new hairs and I can feel new course stubble coming through under the remaining hair.

  2. hello,i am a 4 0year old male and recently had hair transplantation performed about a month ago (800 grafts to prevent further receding). i also started using propecia at the same time and just recently added rogaine to the daily regimen. since the treatment and the use of propecia and rogaine i noticed that my hair has thinned considerably and i can actually see my scalp in areas that i have never been able to see. my hair has always been fairly dense so seeing this has been a bit disconcerting to me. its even more apparant when i get out of the shower. im getting scared that i did somthing wrong and im ready to give up on the both medications. if i do this will my hair grow back to its original density or did i lose what i once had? help please!

  3. Dr. Rassman,
I have been a propecia user for almost 6 months now. My shedding decreased incredibly over the first 2-3 months, but the last couple months my hair loss has slowly come back to what it used to be. I am 23 years old and am looking for suggestions? should I increase dosage? should I try anything else? change my diet? Any help is much appreciated.
