No Improvements After 18 Months on Propecia — Should I Continue Taking It? – Hair Loss Information by Dr. William Rassman

I noticed hair loss from the age of 17 and am now 23. About 2 years back I started using Minoxidil 2% for 6 months and started Minoxidil 5% for another 6 months. There wasnt any improvement and started using propecia for the last 1 year and 6 months. Over all these years there hasnt been any sort of improvement. I can only see my hair getting thinner and thinner with time. I thought propecia is supposed to arrest hair loss. Do I still continue on propecia?

First, as I have said again and again, you need a good diagnosis with your hair mapped out for miniaturization. If you have genetic hair loss and stop the finasteride, you will almost certainly see the hair loss become worse. Just because you are not seeing benefits, it does not mean that you are not getting benefits. Put some science and medical diagnostic force in what is happening to you.

  1. Same here. I have been on Propecia exclusively since August 2005. The first six months I maintained very well. However, the last six months have been awful. Particulary the last couple of weeks. Bald spots are clearly visible in my frontal area. If I wash my hair or work out at least 20+ will come out when I run my fingers through my hair. However, if I do not exert myself and my hair stays dry I don’t lose many at all.

  2. I find this website and Dr. Rassman comments very helpful and informative. But I can’t help but notice that the Doctor seem to be promoting Propecia rather aggressively, even though the drug has some very devastating side effects. Some reports have even suggested that they have documented thousands of cases where men on propecia had permanent erectile dysfunction and other serious health problems. I am a 23-year-old male with genetic hair loss, I have been losing hair for about 2 years now and I only tried the laser hair therapy (was useless) but before I went on to use Propecia or even rogain I did a lot of research and what I found was these drugs have rather disturbing side effects. I rather be bald than have erectile dysfunction at the age to 23 and able to be a father for the rest of my life. And I find it absolutely outrageous that some doctors and drug companies are promoting their drugs like propecia to young men desperate to seek treatment for a devastating condition without considering of advising them of possible side effects of the drug. I am very grateful to my uncle who also happens to be my family doctor for refusing to give me prescription for propecia.

  3. Rico,I only recommend what is proven to work. I have seen Propecia work time and time again, and the rate of ED from this drug is very, very small. I’d like to see these reports you’ve mentioned. If you could send me the links, I’d appreciate it.
