Hair Loss InformationWhy Was I Born With a Bald Spot That Won’t Regrow Hair? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Ive had a bald patch on the left side of my head since birth. It has decreased in size over the years but my doctor has said it will never fully grow hair. I was wondering what caused this and what other alternatives there are.

I cannot tell you why you have a bald patch that you were born with, but think of it like a birth mark. It is what it is.

In most cases, the easy solution to this is with a small hair transplant to the area.

  1. I was born with a huge one- on the top of my head no less! When I was 5, my parents insurance covered what is called a scalp reduction. This is a surgery in which they cut the bald spot out aand sewed my hair back together. Very painfull. It was pted to be done again when I was 17, but the spot was not large enough to be covered by insurance; they covered it before because of sunburning. needless to say, it really stinks to grow up with someone always saying, ” your going bald dude”. Fortunately, I am 34 and am not going bald. I’m at the age where it looks semi natural. People say it’s not “that” noticeable, but thet’s crap. The reason for it has eluded me. Birthmark- I don’t think so. I have been all around, and have met a ton of people in my life and the only people that have a spot resembling mine are on the side of their head. One theory is that that part of the skull was not fully developed at birth. This may be true considering I was born jaundice at 7 and a half months. I think what is more probable; considering the others I’ve met with this condition are all in the saame age group-1977 babies, is that some chemical in some product they sold back then did it. I have seen babies with fetal alcohol syndrome with this, but they are severe cases; not people who blog on the internet. Anyway, I’m on the search same as you brother or sister or whoever you may be. Your not alone, their are like 15 of us out there! L.O.L.

  2. Wow, I too am like you Jay, I was born in 1977 in UK and I have bald spot where my crown should – we are both crownless!!! I too had the surgery you describe. I had 2 as a youngster and so glad I did, pictures of me beforehand as a toddler make me look like Friar Tuck!! Luckily being female I have always had long hair so can tie it back on windy days but it has always bothered me but never got the final op. My head is very bumpy and covered in scars and the area where the spot is is very flat. Is yours too? I get a lot of headaches so recently had an MRI to rule out the nasties and it was not mentioned in my results that there was any malformation of my skull. I would love to know what caused this but the year of birth does make you wonder……?? Did you mum smoke during her pregnancy with you? I know mine did as they just didn’t know the dangers back then but other than that I think everything was pretty normal during pregnancy and birth. I was born very quickly so not sure if this made any difference? Be good to hear more from you!!

  4. I too have this issue. I was born in the US in 1974. I have seen other people with this bald spot and its usually around the same area. I have seen kids with it too, so it is still happening. I thought maybe the doctor who delivered me pulled to hard and caused some sort of permanent damage to that area. Just wondering, anyone who has this, were you born natural or c-section?

  5. Hi my son is 4 he was born with it too. At 5 mouths he stared to get seagurz doctor sayed it was eplapice. I dont beleve that. He started to talk at 9 mouths he smart he get headcks too. Plez this is somthing more then wat the doctors say.

  7. I had a surgery in the second grade and wonder if it was what jay described. Now I don’t have a bald spot but basically a swirl on my head. It’s very noticeable and always style my hair to cover it up. I’m so self conscious about it and nothing I say or do to my parents about it helps.

  8. I too have a small bald spot on the back left side. I was born during the mid 80’s though.mine is red in color and bumpy.i do not cover mine and make up funny stories when people ask.i once made a younger cousin belive I was born with three eyes, but doctors had to remove it because I couldn’t tell if I was coming or going lol. I’ve read a lot into these being death wounds from past life’s. If you believe that type of stuff.

  9. I to have a bald spot on the left side of my head as big as a fifty cent coin, no red just no hair. I hate it, been teased a lot, can’t put my hair in a pony tail and when the wind blows very visible. I feel so uncomfortable and embarrassed. Doctor said its a birthmark and hair will never grow there. It’s not heredity, I was born a natural birth I guess I just have to deal with.

  10. I have had this bald bumpy pink patch on my left side above my ear… I used to tell kids that’s where my batteries went and I was a robot.. I really want to sort of before I start to get older and my hair starts to thin can anyone help please!!

  12. hello,my daughter was just born with a big bald spot on the top of her head. it s obvious that the skin of the skull wasn’t mature , and the reconstruction doctor recommended a surgery at age of 3 years to remove the bald skin.
    is this operation efficient?
    thank u

  13. I was born in 1974 and have the same thing. A bald spot about the size of a quarter on my left side slightly above my left temple. I’ve seen a few people with this in the same area. My mom said she thinks the doctor caused this when he used the forceps to assist in delivering me. Who knows. I’m 41 y/o and to this day, this has been very embarrassing for me. i basically let my hair grow a bit longer in that area to cover it. God forbid its windy or i sweat. LOL Finding a barber is always difficult. I was told by a skin doctor that with treatment, I might be able to grow hair in that area. Never tried. I was also told by a naturopathic doctor to rub the area with a piece of wool until its almost raw, then cut a garlic clove in half and rub the garlic on it a few times a day. He said when it heels, it will start hair growth. He also said to keep repeating the process. I tried a few times and I noticed a few new hairs but stopped doing it. Too painful and the scab looked worse than the bald spot. I think I’ll just deal with it. Let me know if anyone has had any luck with regrowth and how.
