Sad Story from a Man with Post Finasteride Syndrome (from Reddit)

I have been practicing medicine for 27 years, and since the drug was released in the mid-1990s, I have prescribed it thousands of times. In my practice experience, I have never seen this syndrome among the people who got the prescription from me, but since I became aware of this a few years ago, I inform every patient of this risk. Even if the risk is very, very low, for the man who gets it, the risk is 100% and is tragic.

Came across an article on Medium about his ‘Post Finasteride Syndrome’. What are your thoughts? from tressless

Dr. Rassman’s Comments: I saw Dr. Insalaco present these findings at a meeting last month in the United Kingdom. About 200 hair restoration surgeons attended the meeting. Her results (combining Finasteride and minoxidil in a drug formulation) was very impressive, reversing hair loss in various parts of the scalp over an 18 month period of […]

Over the two months between these photos, the hair has been allowed to grow out which could account for these results shown in the photos below. Always be skeptical when seeing a difference either in photography or hair length when comparing before and after pictures

Running Out of Donor Hair

I’m an existing patient of yours and had great results on the front of my scalp with the last session 2 years ago. I’m starting to get a little thin on the crown of my head and a little forward of that. If it stopped where it is now, I wouldn’t be concerned but continued loss would be unnerving.

My issue now is that I’m pretty much out of donor hair. Has any progress been made with something I read about a couple of years ago called hair cloning? Also, I have a few old fashioned plugs that could be thinned and dispersed I suppose.

Nice to hear from you. Please look at the other comments in this blog on hair cloning. There is nothing new that would apply to you. As you are near our Northern California office, visit me there and I will personally assess your balding pattern. You are correct that taking hair from old plugs works, but the problem is total supply versus need. We would have to determine whether there is enough supply from all sources to meet your need for coverage.

Running and Hair Loss

Is there any truth to the fact that running will help with Baldness? Since increase in blood circulation.

Also, what can i take to increase my blood circulation?

Where do these urban legends come from? No, there’s no truth to running as a treatment for hair loss. And before someone asks, running won’t make you lose hair either.

With respect to blood circulation, as long as you can feel the tips of your fingers and toes and it’s warm, I suspect you gave good blood circulation. Hair loss is not related to blood circulation — it is genetics.

Rubbing Areas of My Head Caused Thinning

hey dr
this is gonna sound weird but i used to work in a job that involved lifting boxes all day. i lift them on my right shoulder and the boxes would always rub the side of my head and right
eyebrow but i noticed the hair on the right side thinning and also the eyebrow on the right side missing hair and i figured out that all the constant rubbing over the years had caused it. i
have a full head of hair all over except these affected areas. ive made sure over the last year not to touch my head with the boxes but ive noticed no regrowth. i was just wondering if you could suggest anything to use on my the affected areas to promote new hair growth that wont maybe lead to further hairloss as ive heard a lot treatments like rogaine once stopped can cause further hairloss. thanks

What you are describing seems to be a form of traction alopecia, where repeated tension on the scalp and hair causes hair loss. Rubbing hair also puts a pull on hair that is near the end of its cycle. If you have constant traction, this type of hair loss can be permanent. You can try Rogaine in those areas to see if some hair will grow back.

Rubber Bands Caused Scalp Bumps?

Hi doctor,
I am a 19 year old male who had really long hair a year ago. I use to tie my hair in a bun with lots of rubber bands. The rubber bands were pushed really hard against my scalp and my scalped from a bruise/bump. The bruise was red, painful, itchy, and bumpy. I pushed down on the bump with my thumb to make it flat and applied Neosporin. The swelling went away but the hair loss remains till this day. My dermatologist recommended rogaine foam but i have seen little progress(5 months in.)My doctor does not recommend cortisone injections.

Rubber bandYou were not doing yourself justice with making tight rubber bands pull on your scalp. This can cause traction alopecia. In your case though, I can’t tell you what is going on with your scalp without seeing you directly.

Are you balding all elsewhere or just one hairless spot? Are there local areas that are missing hair? I can keep asking questions, but without even a picture, I am helpless.

You may wish to see another dermatologist if you don’t feel you were given adequate time or treatment. Or go back and ask your dermatologist for a follow-up.

I Rubbed by Graft Area and Bled on the 5th Day. Did I Lose Grafts? (Photo)

If you rubbed too hard on the crusts in the recipient area prior to the 12th day, you could have dislodged grafts. I wrote an article on this, and it takes 12 days for the grafts to be secure with crusting. (Read here: https://baldingblog.com/wp-content/uploads/pdf/mp-2006-graft-anchoring.pdf).

Roman Skull ~2000 years old

The hair was preserved. I wonder why? In many digs with skulls going back thousands of years, wigs have been found on the skulls
