Roger Stone Has Incomplete Crown Balding and Repaired ‘Plugs’ in His Frontal Hairline (Photo)
This is a common finding, something that I had with even more balding in the crown. Frontal hair loss and crown hair loss go hand-in-hand. He has a great hairline now, but at some time in the past, he had terrible pluggy hair transplants. He was fortunate to have had it repaired (and his white hair hides plugs nicely) so that the old plugs don’t show now.
I was relatively bald in the crown (balder than Mr. Stone). I received 2700 grafts over a 24 year period but I never lost hair in the front. His frontal hairline was clearly moved down and it is now in the normal position after his repair was done. I can tell this because I see the highest crease in his furrowed brow is less than one finger breadth below his hairline.
Rogaine vs Regaine
What is the difference between Regaine and Rogaine where I can see that these two products have the same ingredients (Minoxidil 50 mg; propylene glycol; alcohol and purified water) are there any difference between this two products and which one do your recommend thanks for your time.
No difference that I know of. Regaine is the name in the UK and Australian markets. Rogaine is the name in the US market (and possibly other markets). They even share a similar logo and packaging.
Rogaine Shedding, Nizoral
Hello, I’ve never used Rogaine, in fear of the “shedding” phase I’d heard about. What exactly is the “shedding” phase, if I may ask.
And will this product cause that? And is there a list of the ingredients anywhere or should I not be asking that? I’m just very curious.
Last but not least question, if this products is discontinued, I am assuming everything on the scalp goes back to “as it was” before, and are there any products that shouldn’t be used, such as Nizoral Shampoo?
Your help is greatly appreciated. Sorry, where can I purchase only the “hair grow” product, not the cleaner etc?

I am not completely sold on Nizoral shampoo, although I do believe that it is a good shampoo. I do not believe it is necessarily good at regrowing hair. There is not enough scientific data to support hair growth claims. You can buy Rogaine over the counter and I doubt that minoxidil (generic form) will ever go off the market. The miniaturized hairs become dependent upon minoxidil when you take it and when it works. If you were to stop the Rogaine (minoxidil) and there was a benefit of it, you will go back to your ‘before’ status, plus losing whatever hair you would have lost prior to starting the medication. This may very well leave you worse off.

Rogaine Regrew Part of My Hairline, So What Can I Do To Make The Other Side Grow?
Rogaine is growing old hair line back but only on one side. Other side is still receding and thinning more. Why is this? Been on rogaine consistantly for 5 1/2 months and propecia for a year. Should I continue rogaine or stop? Do not want to lose anymore hair on that one side. Thanks
How are you sure it was the Rogaine (minoxidil) and not the Propecia (finasteride) that caused the regrowth? If you stop either treatment, you will probably lose what you gained, even if the benefits were only visible on the one side. It’s up to you whether you’re willing to risk it.
If you end up using both medications for at least 12 months and still don’t see a similar regrowth on the other side of your hairline, then a hair transplant may be the only solution for you.
Rogaine Regrew My Hairline!

Just want to share a success story. I had my hair mapped for miniturisation, it was apparent that i was thinning in the temple region and starting in the crown area. I have been using 5% minoxidil ever since for about a year now and I have experience exceptional regrowth in the temple region(although the regrown hair is shorter than the rest of my hair-2cm long, the rest of my hair is 5cm long in the front). I heard that minoxidil does not grow hair there!
The regrown hair has covered the receding hairline making my hairline appear more full, I now have a mature hairline, could even be a lower than a mature hairline. I have just started propecia 40 days ago to maintain what I got on my head, at the moment i’m very happy!! By the way i’m 20 years old..
Your results are terrific by your own description; however, at your age the pull of the balding process will be great, so the minoxidil and the Propecia you just started on may not hold the hair there forever (particularly lower than a mature hairline).
Rogaine, Propecia, Avodart, and Other Basics
Hey doc, Great site!
Here is my background: I’m 30 yrs old; have been on Propecia for about 5 years now; the hair on the crown of my head is full; but I have a pretty good widow’s peak and am starting thin pretty severly along my hairline. I just wanted to fact check a few things:
- Is Rogaine my only viable option at this point to stop the thinning in front?
- If I up the dosage if Propecia from 1mg to 2mg will that work? Will it still take 8mos to see new growth given that I’ve been on the product for 5 yrs?
- At what age would you advise I look into hair transplantation?
- Should I even consider Avodart since it’s not approved by the FDA? Has it been shown to be more effective with re-growing frontal hair?

The questions that you asked have been answered separately on multiple posts in the pasts, but I’ll briefly answer them here again…
- Rogaine is recommended mostly for the top and crown area, based on the several studies that were performed on its effectiveness. There is more and more testimony from doctors who recommend it that minoxidil does work in the front and when combined with Propecia shows reasonable results in the frontal area. This is more a subjective call by doctors who know, rather than the type of objective data that the FDA requires.
- There is no evidence to show higher doses than 1mg can improve hair growth, but trying it at say twice the dose, may be reasonable provided that you do not experience negative sexual side effects.
- At your age, if you have male pattern baldness and are in stage 3 or above on Norwood classification, you can be a hair transplant candidate.
- I would probably not consider Avodart. At this point we can not recommend Avodart (dutasteride), because there is not enough medical evidence to show its advantage over Propecia (finasteride), which has much less side effects. Now with that said, it is presently being tested in Korea under an FDA protocol. I would be interested to see the side effects on this drug as well as its effectiveness as reported in scientific formats.

Rogaine on the Hairline — Worth a Shot?

I recently met with a new dermatologist after I noticed significant and abrupt patterns of shedding. I am 30 years old, and I’ve been on Propecia for 10 years and was thrilled with it up until about a year ago. It was then that I noticed a ton of sheddin in the shower, pillow, etc, etc.
I asked my doctor about Rogaine, and told him I had been using on the crown of my head for about 8 months, as a preacautionay measure, in case Propecia stopped being effective for me. He said to use it on my hairline as well. He said that although Rogain is not FDA approved to be effective on the hairline, that doens’ mean that it isn’t. He said “its worth a shot”. What are your thoughts on this?

There have been reports of minoxidil being effective on the frontal hairline, but they are few such observations with significant hair growth. I suppose it is worth a shot.

Rogaine on Eyelashes?
(female) Can I use Rogaine on my eyelashes? I know it has not been tested on eyelashes, but do the ingredients seem harmful, or simply not yet approved for that purpose? Also, what about using Rogaine on my eyebrows?
Rogaine (minoxidil) is an irritant and if you use it around the eye and accidentally get it into the eye, you could be in for problems. I would think that the use of minoxidil in any form would not be a good thing to do for eyelashes. The new eyelash growth medication is Latisse (bimatoprost).
I know some patients have tried minoxidil on their eyebrows with mixed results. Just note that minoxidil isn’t recommended for anywhere other than the scalp, so be cautious if you do use it on the eyebrows.
Rogaine Not Proven to Work Past 48 Weeks?
I noticed on the pamphlet with my rogaine bottle that it says the medication has not been proven to work past 48 weeks. Does this mean that Rogaine doesnt work pass that many weeks or that the study was only conducted for 48 weeks? I have been using rogaine for 4 months and have seen fantastic results. Before then I was only using propecia without any results, now I use both.
I found the following statement, “hair regrowth has not been shown to last longer than 48 weeks in large clinical trials with continuous treatment with 5% minoxidil topical solution for men”. This implies that the study only went out 48 weeks. I have seen people on this medication for years and years and when and if they stop it, they lose hair. This phenomenon suggests that the Rogaine held the effect and benefit for the years it was used.
