Nizoral Safety?

Recently, I have noticed white spots all over my back and my chest. I personally believe that I caught a fungus from the tanning bed.

The dermatologist gave me a prescription for Nizoral tablets. His recommendation is to take two tablets, then exercise to sweat a couple hours after ingestion. Then, repeat the process with two more tablets one week later.

My questions is—are Nizoral tablets safe? I have heard that they are very taxing on the liver and may cause side-effects, one of which could be hairloss??? Will it most likely be safe for me to take this round of 4 tablets? Thank you

If a medical doctor prescribed you the medication for a condition he has diagnosed, then you should ask these questions and concerns to that doctor. I cannot stress enough the importance of a good patient to doctor relationship. BaldingBlog is not intended to give second medical opinions or diagnose medical problems. This site is here to educate the public from our professional experiences. That being said, anti-fungal medications are used to treat fungal infections. They may be toxic to the liver if taken in large doses and/or if you are particularly sensitive to that medication or have underlying liver problems. You should also know that other medications, such as Tylenol, are also toxic to the liver if taken in large doses.

Nizoral or Nioxin Shampoos to Treat Female Hair Loss?

Hello. I’m a woman, 32 years old, and have been experiencing more shedding lately. I would like to know if Nizoral shampoo with 1% Ketoconazole effective in treating hair loss. I am thinking about buying it, but don’t want to waste the money if it’s ineffective. Also, how about Nioxin shampoo? Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. Have a good day!

Both are good shampoos, but neither have been proven to my satisfaction to treat hair loss. There’s some speculation that ketoconazole could be used as a hair loss treatment, but I’ve yet to see a sufficient study to show that (though many on the various web forums will gladly tell you otherwise). You’re welcome to try either or both…

Nizoral, Milk, Cows and Hair Loss

Hi Dr. Rassman,

I have a couple questions to ask you regarding my hairloss situation. First of all, im 21 yr old male. I recently began losing a lot of hair suddenly throughout my whole head at about 8 months ago. I have been on propecia for 7 months now. However, the majority of hairs that fall out(about 75%) has a white hard mucus substance that can be scraped off from the end of the hair. I lose about 150ish hairs and they are basically always all the same size hair. I also seem to have a lot of dandruff (im assuming, white mucus-like flakes) that fall off also with the hair.
I just went to a dermatologist the other day and had him look at everything. He looked and sifted through my temple region hairs with just his eyes but didnt really look closely at anything else (no magnifying or anything). When i asked him about the white mucus stuff, he said it was normal to have that. (For the record, i know that hair has little white bulbs on the end of a hair, but this isnt the case here. it is real scrapable stuff, NOT the bulb)I then asked him about taking a scalp biopsy and he told me that that wouldnt really show anything. I then asked him about measuring my level of DHT in my body to see if its really high and he said that also wouldnt show anything because it doesnt matter how much DHT we have in our system, it only matters how much the hair follicles react to that DHT. He then gave me a form to get my thyroid, iron, and blood glucose? tested, which i will do now.
He then concluded that the acne on my face that is deep down inside my skin (never been able to get rid of it) could have something to do with my scalp and the flakey-ness as well as the mucus on the hair pieces so he prescribed me Nizoral 2% shampoo as well as Nizoral pills to get deep down and clear out my face and anything in my scalp. He also believed that milk could be playing a part in my hair loss because of the hormones milk has and how it bypasses the DHT blockers in propecia. (I do consume a lot of dairy products) He was very adamant about it and said how americans are much more balder than other countries and how the US drinks much more milk than others, etc. and how he is planning on doing a research project on it with candidates, etc. So he told me to stop all intake of milk, cheese, ice cream, etc. and see if it improves in the 2 months when i see him for a followup appointment. I asked about the loss of calcium etc. and he said that i would be fine without it and the loss of dairy products wouldnt have that big of an effect. (i could get it from other food products, etc.)
What im wondering is if what you think of my situation and about the dermatologist. I was just a little taken back about how he didnt give me a scalp biopsy, or look in a magnified glass to see deep down in my scalp. I dont doubt his intelligence because he told me that he was one of the doctors that got the creation of Nizoral, etc. and he is very well known and popular. (takes 3 months to get an appt.) I was just wondering if you agree and what your thoughts are on what he said about the different tests and if the examination of me seemed correct because i really wanted a biopsy and DHT test since i heard it worked well. Also, what are your thoughts of the acne issue and besides the thyroid, iron, and blood glucose tests, are there any other tests or procedures done to see if my hair loss is normal. And lastly, what is your opinion on my hair loss situation and is this normal? If that white mucus stuff isnt normal, does that mean that as each one of those hairs falls out, does that mean that particualr hair will never grow back? (is that the hair follicle or something meaning permanent loss?) I will send you a picture of my hairs and of my scalp.
Thank you so much for your time in reading and replying to this, it means so much to me. Im really having a hard time trying to deal with this.

The tests that your dermatologist told you about are always a good idea, so he can be sure that you do not have other causes of hair loss (other than genetic male patterned balding, which is the most common). We generally lose 100-150 hairs per day, so seeing the hair come out does not bother me. If you are picking because of the scaling, then more hair loss with bulbs may be detectable. What I always do and think is important to do, is a thorough analysis of your scalp by region, looking for miniaturization, which is the hallmark for genetic balding and some other forms of balding as well. Any good long-term plan, which is critical for someone of your age, must have periodic follow-ups of the scalp, quantifying the degree of miniaturization and any changes over time. Without that step, there is no possibility that a diagnosis of genetic male pattern balding can be made. Hair falling out is normal, provided that your body replaces the same amount (usually between 100-150 hairs per day).

With regard to the milk focus that your dermatologist is referring to, I am not familiar with it, nor have I found that others in the hair restoration community have developed such focus. I was a dairy farmer many years ago, and I do not believe that we are allowed to use the type of hormones in these cows that would produce more hair loss, but it’s been many years since I’ve last milked cows. As for Nizoral, I’ve discussed this previously here: Nizoral Shampoo.

It sounds to me like you need some real assessment of the balding process by a hair specialist, like me. On the east coast, Dr. Robert Bernstein in New York (phone – 201-585-1115) would also be able to do such an examination for you as well.

Nizoral and Seborrheic Dermatitis

(male) I was recently prescribed Nizoral 2% and clobex lotion for a condition of moderate seborrheic dermatitis. I was told to use each once per day for a month. At the time of my doctors visit, i made a point of telling the doctor that my hair has been chemically processed quite a bit over the past few years (coloring and bleaching) and that I was concerned that he give me something that would not damage it. Within a couple of days, my hair was dried out to the point of being like straw and was breaking off near the roots. Since then I have been experiencing an abnormal amount of hair fall on a daily basis. All of the literature I can find on the 2% Nizoral seems to say that is should be used only once and then on a very intermittent basis. I am wondering what you think of the dosage that was prescribed for my condition? I should add that I have since changed doctors and have been told to use Fluocinolone acetonide 0.01% which has cleared my scalp condition in only 2 weeks. So now my scalp condition is better but my hair is stlll breaking off and falling out. Any advice?

My response to such questions requires a face-to-face meeting and an examination. The practice of medicine is an art form that caring doctors in the ‘hair’ field base their views on such issues as yours after a direct examination of the hair and scalp. Nizoral should not be abused and should always be taken as directed. If a doctor recommended a more frequent use, your probe of the problem should be directed to that doctor. Chemicals that seep into the hair follicles can damage them. Questions that an examination of the hair and scalp would point to include the differential diagnosis between telogen effluvium and cyclical genetic hair loss. I am happy to hear that your seborrheic dermatitis has resolved.

Nitric Oxide to Increase Hair Growth?

Hi Doctor, I’m a Finasteride User and have been using the same from past 2 months but not have seen visible results as its Just a starting. I have been using BSN Products like Nitrix, Cell Mass and NO-Xplode for performance enhancement in the Gym. One of web pages which triggered my interest is this: HairLossTalk.com, which says NO levels can increase hair growth and it stimulates the hair growth. I don’t know how far it is true. Also i cannot relate my hair loss with usage of these products as I have Just started using it. Could please go through the link and tell us Does Nitrix Oxide and L-Arginine and other amino acids can increase hair growth ? I was always in a Dilemma whether to use or not to use these nutrient supplements. Kindly clarify my doubts.

The Internet is filled with good information and a whole lot of misinformation. I don’t believe there is a link with hair growth from nitric oxide (NO) or L-arginine. L-arginine is an amino acid you get by just having a normal diet. No one has yet to find the cure for hair loss and everyone is trying to make a fast buck. Of course, since you’re trying it for yourself, if it grows hair where you were once thinning, let me know.

I wrote about this a few months back — Nitric Oxide and Hair Loss.

Nitric Oxide and Hair Loss

Will taking Nitric Oxide have adverse reaction on my thinning hair or the opposite?

We do know that nitric oxide is a vasodilator. Many of the claims that relate to increased blood flow that are reported from the low level laser therapy (LLLT) suggest that it is the nitric oxide that is causing the increased blood supply. Simply, LLLT has been claimed to increase blood flow to the hair follicles through nitric oxide production and release, thereby increasing hair growth. The evidence for this is scant and conjectural. Some people feel that if you take L-arginine supplements, this will help facilitate the process, but be careful as L-arginine is known in high doses to be a dangerous agent.

I hope I didn’t lose anyone. To sum all of that up — no, I do not believe it will have any effect on thinning hair.

Nicotine Patch and Finasteride?

I have a few questions. I started taking propecia in July 2010 and a few months ago switched to the generic 5mg finasteride (cut in 1/4s).

1. Is it ok to use a nicotine patch while I’m taking finasteride?
2. My doctor recently suggested I start using rogaine 5% in addition to finasteride. I would like to keep what hair I have and regrow some if possible, but I have read alot about shedding which makes me nervous. I know the shed hair should regrow but it still gets me worried. How prevalent is shedding in your experience with patients you’ve recommended rogaine to?
3. Also, out of curiousity, what NW pattern are you?

1. A nicotine patch can be worn while you take finasteride. I don’t know of any contraindication.

2. Hair shedding after starting Rogaine happens, but not very frequently in the patients who I have seen that use it. The good news is that the shedding doesn’t last forever and rarely, if ever, produces permanent hair loss.

3. I was a Norwood Class 3 Vertex (3V) without the frontal component, making my hair loss purely in the crown.
