Hi,

I’m not sure if my crown is thinning or not…. but its a strange shape…around 2inches circle in diameter with a bit of hair in the middle. The hair around it is quite dense, especially when wet, although when dry because it parts in all different directions it looks thinner.

Is this a normal crown pattern (to have hair in the middle and a circular thinner area around it)? I’ve had it for at least the last 5 years and i dont think its changed. But i also do have a slightly thinned hairline…maybe nw2-3.

I have seen this type of “donuting” in men who have had transplants in the crown years ago, and then had to face balding around the transplanted hair. The progression of their hair loss causes the crown to continue thinning, besides the permanently transplanted hair in the middle.

I do not recall seeing it in a natural balding pattern, though.

Although this caricature is funny, it is pointing out the problems that many clinics are experiencing with surgical masks. Fortunately, we have adequate supply, but unless more supply is going to be available, we may do some improvising.

Hello, just a question from yet another freaked out 20 year old.

Ok, so neither side of my family has a history of balding. The only stand-out is my brother. He’s going bald, but he had a different father than me. Could his father’s genetics have played a role in his unfortunate fate?

Also, I’ve read that a “mature” hairline is a euphemism for receding hairline. What would you say about this? Thanks for your time.

Hair loss in most men is genetic, and it can come from either the mother’s side or the father’s side (or both).

As for the mature hairline, we have extensively written about what that is ( see here). It is not balding in the traditional sense and it is not a progressive recession of the hairline. Some men see their hairline mature and don’t see any patterned loss beyond that.

My boyfriend is 25 years old and has already started to go bald, he won’t leave the house without a hat. I can tell that it is really effecting his self-esteem. What can he do?

Your boyfriend has what appears to be early hair loss, an indication of male pattern hair loss. He should see a doctor who specializes in hair. He should meet with a doctor experienced in this field, get a HAIRCHECK test (invested capital for me ) to find out just how much hair loss he had and where it is, both what he can see and what he don’t see. Then with proper treatment, maybe he can stop the loss, possibly reverse it before he becomes bald

My boyfriend is 22 and is quite noticeably balding on the top of his head. I’ve never said anything about it because I figured he was probably already aware and bringing it up would just come off as rude and hurtful. I really don’t care — sure, I like his hair, but that’s a very minuscule part of what makes him attractive to me.

Recently, though, he mentioned to me that he took creatine briefly while trying to bulk up for a role in a play where he had a shirtless scene. He said he stopped taking it pretty quickly after his doctor advised him to avoid that stuff. He said “I heard it can make you lose your hair and my hairline is already going a bit.”

Many men practice denial all the way from early thinning to complete balding as suggested here. Some eventually with the help of a wife or child, find out. I, for example, didn’t know my crown was bald until my oldest son (about 18 at the time) commented on my bald spot in the back of my head. When I became a hair transplant surgeon, my wife told me that it would be bad for business if I had a bald spot, so I fixed it. Some men just don’t pay attention while other deny it.

Hi doc, i am 17 years old now and i know this sounds completely crazy but years ago i dyed my hair and now its gone thin and flat and lighter, but before i dyed my hair i used to have very thick body hair as well around my legs, chest and face.

But now my body hair has become so much finer like my head hair is. I am just wondering if there is any correlation between this, because i dyed my head hair and my body hair has become finer to match my head hair? i cannot even grow a full beard anymore like i used to be able to it is really weird.

You had a full beard at 17 years old? What you’re seeing is probably more of a coincidence rather than a correlation. Dyeing the hair does not usually cause thinning, particularly if it was done on the scalp and the loss is seen on your body.

If you are concerned about hair loss and changes to your body hair, you need to see a doctor for an examination. Maybe it is hormone related. Maybe you have an diagnosed medical condition. Anything is a possibility, but the hair dye is not likely the issue.

My best friend has a literally perfect juvenile hairline, not a single out of place or thinned hair, complete thickness, length, literally perfect as if he was 10 years old.

My grandfather (mother’s father) had a perfect juvenile hairline and no hair loss when he died at 102. It happens and not everyone loses their hair or their juvenile hairline. Most of his sons had perfect hairlines as well and the children of these men might inherit the same hairline qualities.
