Is this a reliable LLLT research study?

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24078483/ It demonstrates “A 39% percent hair increase was demonstrated”

Photography has lots of problems with it mostly because it is subjective, depends upon views and lighting, length of hair where small increases in length make a big difference. Defined hair counts with tattoo placement to guarantee that the same field would be examined to have value. Also objective studies like the HAIRCHECK would convince me but it doesn’t seem to be a driving force for investigators.

Is this a new breakthrough for Cloning hair?

https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20240206170882/en/Stemson-Therapeutics-Announces-Technological-Breakthrough-in-New-Hair-Growth

Hair has been cloned before. I was told that the problem encountered was when they put the cloned hairs into mice, they all died of infected hair follicles. This was because the hairs grew in all directions and didn’t orient themselves properly; hair grew out of skin. Think of hair as a complex organ that knows up from down and develops groups of hairs that work together in this hair organ with appropriate supportive vasculature and nerves. If it all doesn’t go up uniformly and grows down instead (relating to the scalp surface), an infection may occur as this foreign body (the actual hair shaft is a foreign body to everyone’s scalp) causes problems. The game isn’t over in a basketball game until the last pass is made and the clock runs out. Let’s see what they come up with. I wish them good luck!

Is this a hair system? (photos)

The photo on the left: Some good laced systems have some fiber/plastic leading edge that create a good frontal hairline that looks completely natural. These system are generally very expensive but still must be changed every couple of weeks as the patient’s own hair grows out from under them. From a close up view, you almost always can detect the laced element of a hair system. I can’t see close enough to determine if this is a very good laced system as this man claims it is. If this is a laced hair system, then this is what I believe that Donald Trump uses.
The photo on the right, is a more typical hair system. Most men never show the hairline of a hair system because of the obvious lack of a good transition zone between the bare forehead and the hair. With the hair combed over the hairline, this hair system on the right can look good. All hair systems need to be adjusted for hair growth every few weeks which makes the user dependent upon the hair system folks who sold it to them.
Both of these hair systems are glued to the scalp.

Is Thinner Hair in the Crown Normal?

I’m a 29-year-old male with an extremely thick head of hair…may not sound like a problem but I’ve noticed that it is somewhat (not much, but noticeable to the feel) thinner in the crown area. I still have full coverage however, but I’m just wondering if this is something to keep an eye on or if it is natural of most people’s heads and nothing to worry about.

Some people develop crown thinning leading to crown hair loss (which is what I had). Get your scalp mapped out for miniaturization to determine if you have genetic thinning of the crown and if you do, drugs like Propecia (in its early stages) can completely reverse the process and maintain a reversal for years and years in some people.

Is There Professional Jealousy of Dr Gho’s Technique?

Comment received in response to the recent post about Dr Gho’s technique:

Sorry doc, but the difference between his procedure and yours is that his does not deplete the donor. He has proven this over and over again both with patients and peer reviewed journal articles. He uses a smaller, wave tipped needle and a special storage solution to make this possible. I would suggest that you look into his procedure further before making blanket assumptions and accusations out of what appears to be professional jealousy? With respect.

I have no professional jealousy here. When I watched his video at one of the medical meetings where he presented his technique, what I clearly saw was FUE. I polled the doctors that viewed it (unofficially) and most people agreed that what they saw, looked like FUE to them. On my next trip to Amsterdam, I will call and ask him to allow me to view his technique up close.

Is There More DUPA Today or Are People Just More Aware of It?

Is there an influx in people with diffuse unpatterned alopecia nowadays or is the internet just making people more aware of this sort of hair loss?

I’ve been using the internet for the past 7 years and initially information about DUPA was scarce, in fact your website was the first place I ever saw a mention of it. and now you can find hundreds of topics from all over the web talking about DUPA.

when did you personally start noticing this type of hair loss?

When we wrote about DUPA in the medical literature back in 1995 (PDF here), the diagnosis required that the physician look at the donor area with high power magnification.

With my invention of the hair densitometer with patent issued in 1994 (U.S. Patent 5,331,472 – Method and Apparatus for Measuring Hair Density July, 1994) the ability to look at the donor area was made feasible. It took quite a few years and constant physician education by myself and Dr. Bernstein to show the importance of this diagnosis. Doctors who had hair transplant failures discovered DUPA and then began to be a big fan of doing the high powered examination to avoid tackling such patients with surgical procedures.

To answer your question, education takes time and the doctors slowly began including the diagnosis in the range of possibilities in patients. As a result, more and more emphasis of this technology was brought to the public. The internet and this site also probably helped get the word out.

Is There Anything a Woman Can Do for Alopecia Universalis?

i am a 62year old african american and i have universal alopecia. I am a female i was wondering if there is anything out there that could grow my hair back or could i get a hair transplant. I haven’t tried anything for it, i only wear wigs.

For men, I might recommend scalp micro-pigmentation (SMP), as this can give the appearance of a closely cropped traditionally male hairstyle… but for women, unless this type of style is an option for you, I wouldn’t recommend it. There is unfortunately nothing available (aside from wigs) today. You couldn’t get a hair transplant, as you have no hair to move.

Is There Any Way to Scrape the DHT off of Your Scalp?

I really don’t want to go on fin because of the sides, but I need another way of getting the DHT off of my scalp. Has anyone ever been successful at scraping it off? Any help is appreciated.

The DHT is in your blood and hair follicles, so it can’t be taken off of your scalp.

Is There ANY Way to Restore Hair Non-Surgically?!

Dr. Rassman,

I have been impressed by your credentials and history as a leader in hair loss treatment and restoration. I’m a 22-year old who recently graduated from college. I’m engaged to be married on December 30th and, sadly, already experiencing initial stages of receding and thinning. I’m not currently financially able to have surgery and don’t really ever want to, but I’m just wondering if there is ANY possible way to restore hair non-surgically. I know Propecia and Rogaine can prevent/slow hair loss, but I’m interested in more than that – gaining old hair back.

You probably laugh at my ignorance – I’ve just started researching this and don’t know a lot about such things, but I’m curious and thought I’d try to ask around. Thanks for your help!

I like to be scientific and establish solid baselines for planning purposes. Throughout this blog I say over and over (and over) again to get you hair mapped out for miniaturization so that you can help predict what may happen to you. You are correct in your assumption that hair transplants (particularly in the front) is the only way to put hair back. In the back, if the hair loss is recent I would hope that someone of your age may see reversal of some or all of the process. You are educated by schooling, now get yourself educated with regard to your health and your looks and take charge of it once you know it all. My website newhair.com and my book (available by download or free by mail) are places to go to get educated.
