Never ask for 8000 FUE grafts. Unfortunately, too many patients want more hair and forget that if they take it from the back and side of the head, what is removed to fix the balding front, top and crown will be gone forever. Now this man traded a bald look in the mirror (I am assuming that the transplant was successful) for a bald back and side of his head. Not Good!

I’ve had two procedures in two consecutive days. First day, they took 4,000 FUE grafts, then they made scratches in the recipient area. The doctor said I had too much bleeding from my scalp (because of Minoxidil). On the second day, they took 4,000 more FUE grafts, and then transplanted all 8,000 grafts. I am now one month after the surgery, and my hair looks worse than before the transplant. I have not used the Minoxidil since the surgery and my donor area has poor density now.
If you had the first 4,000 grafts taken out and stored, then the next 4,000 grafts taken out the following day with all of the grafts transplanted on the second day, I suspect that not all of the grafts survived, particularly those taken out the first day. Some of the grafts placed into the recipient area might have problems as well, unless very strict protocols were followed for graft preservation. If the grafts were all transplanted on the second day, then all of the grafts taken out on the first day would not survive. Studies show that after 8 hours, graft survival drop off at 1% per hour.
If your hair is worse now, maybe this will continue. Until the eighth month, you will not know the survival of the grafts or the preservation of the native hair that you had present. If you had 8,000 FUE grafts, I am almost certain that you will have significant donor site depletion (balding in the donor area) as few patients have the density in the donor area that can support that number of FUE grafts. This many FUE grafts will make the donor area see-through (appear balding) and will not tolerated well.

i am in a bit of a confusing state. i had a transplant with a reputable doctor in canada 9 months ago to restore the hairline and provide some coveredge on the top and not the crown (i was a norwood 5).
i had roughly 3600 grafts, mainly focusing on the hairline. 9 months have past and i can say honestly that im not impressed. whilst i see an improvement on the top of the scalp, the main area which is the hairline is unexceptional. from temple to temple, it still looks like a receded hairline and the surprising thing is, its just the hairline area which is from temple to temple and approximately half an inch in lenght i.e. hairline lenght (temple to temple) x half inch which has shown no improvement. its extremely thin and whilst i can feel some stubble in various regions there, i honestly think that for 9 months, it is unexceptional. my head is visible through my hairline and anyone can say that i am balding.
i have been imforming my doctor on regular basis and he says i should wait a full 12 months before coming to a conclusion. i have not been satisfied with my hairline for the past 9 months, is there any hope that the next 3 months could make a difference?
At about 9 months you should have 90% of your results in. You might get a second opinion if your doctor is not being responsive. Some rare people have slow growth, but usually by 9 months, much if not most of the hair should be growing. An expert doctor will tell you how many grafts are growing. 3600 grafts is a lot of hair moved — you must have been fairly bald.
If you email me some before and after photos and point out the areas that were transplanted, I might be able to help you over the internet. Be sure they are good quality digital pictures (various angles will help) and please reference this post when sending.
Minoxidil does not impact the hairs that you are losing from miniaturization and genetic hair loss, it does grow new hair. So what you are seeing is the shedding of your native hair.

There are a great deal of claims that may accurately reflect the patient example, however, the documentation and balance of the presentation is poor and heavily biased. Read it accordingly.
It’s worth pointing out that this recent hysteria is just based on interviews with 54 men, where the participants reported their own issues after stopping the medication. Even more important is to note that these men were recruited from PropeciaHelp.com, an anonymous web forum where men post about problems (real or otherwise) they have from the medication.
The surprising 96% figure gives the media a good, scary headline to get people interested in watching or reading their report. For example, I just saw a quick 20 second segment on my local morning news that said “96% of men have persistent side effects”, but provided nothing else beyond that. It’s very alarmist and misleading.

I saw this patient in my office yesterday that was referred to me for assessment. This 38 year old fellow ( Class IV-V ), had a transplant 4 weeks ago in Ludhiana, India. He felt that the procedure didn’t go very well.
On examination the crown had been transplanted with 60 – 65 punch grafts that were 2-3 mm in diameter and the distance between grafts was 1 – 1.75 cm, very irregularly, across the crown. Peri-folliculitis was evident and residual crusting on some of the grafts. There was up to 7 hairs in some of the grafts. The grafts were removed via FUE from the occipital area. The procedure took 1 hour and he was told to return next month for a second session of the same. The cost – $500.00 for both sessions.
I have swabbed for C&S what I could, cleansed the scalp, started an antibiotic and suggested Propecia, with follow up in 1 week. He would like further sessions to the crown. He needed a proper consultation as to planning and the consequences of starting the crown in a 38 year old with certainly further thinning in the future. Further sessions at this point are unwise. I will be following up with him closely.
Dr. Cotterill has given me permission to repost these photos. It is unfortunate that people treat a hair transplant procedure as if they’re just getting a haircut. This is surgery! You want to do your research and know what you’re getting into. How could anyone recently get the old, ugly plugs of decades past? It’s disturbing on many levels. So he only spent $500 on 2 sessions to get this look. Now how much time and money will he have to spend to try to undo this foolish mistake? A bargain indeed.
