Hair Loss InformationIn the News – A Year After Wayne Rooney’s Transplant, His Hair Looks Very Thin – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Snippet from the article:

He could be tempted to scratch his head over why he spent the money – but on this evidence that might not be the best of plans.

Exactly a year after Wayne Rooney paid £30,000 for a hair transplant, his new thatch is showing signs of thinning.

I wrote about his transplant looking thin months ago. As to why his hair looks so much thinner now, I couldn’t say. To really comment on the actual results, I would have to run a comb through his hair.

Hair Loss Information2 Months After My Hair Transplant, Should I Be Doing Anything? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I had a hair transplant 2 months ago. Should I be taking any medication to encourage growth or retain native hair? My surgeon said it was not necessary, but I an concerned about losing transplanted and native hair thanks

Block Quote

I do not think I can impart any more wisdom that what your surgeon has already told you. If the surgery went well, it should grow in 6 to 8 months. The native hairs may fall out as it depends on your genetic fate and if you were taking Propecia, you might be protected from the shock loss that occurs after a transplant. Just be patient and take good care of yourself.

A Thank You Goes a Long Way for Doctors – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

This patient flew halfway around the world to come to us for a hair transplant in Los Angeles. He sent me this nice email after his surgery, and I wanted to share.

Thank youI am doing really well. The back of my head as well as the region where the grafts were placed is virtually pain free and surprisingly I feel really good. I did make it home ok, although the flight home was terrible due to the lack of consideration by the person who was sitting next to me (he was a New Yorker).

I wanted to say a big thanks to all you guys at NHI. I couldn’t believe how little pain there was and how easy the entire process was. You helped with every aspect of the process which was very much appreciated. Hopefully the hair grows well and I get great result. A big thanks again and i will be sure to visit the next time i am in town in late December early January.

Failed Hair Transplant with No Trace of Recipient Sites – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Last week, I saw a patient with a failed hair transplant done by a hair transplant clinic located not too far from my office in Los Angeles. This patient received 4000 grafts (his report) and there was not one hair that I could find in the recipient area that reflected a surgery. I do not believe that I have ever seen such a complete wipeout of a hair transplant without even a trace of recipient site wounds. He did have a donor area scar, so I do not doubt his report of receiving a procedure that removed donor hair… but I couldn’t seem to find where those grafts went. He was undecided about what he wants to do next, so we just discussed options and his reduced donor supply.

I would be at a loss to ascertain the cause of the failure. I felt bad for him being victimized in his quest for hair. Over and over again, I tell prospective patients to do their research, and challenge the doctors you are considering with questions and observations that are covered in our selecting a hair transplant doctor guide. Our monthly Open House events show that our practice is an open book — no secrets, no bad press on the internet, happy patients who are proud to talk about their transformations. That is what you should demand of any doctor you are considering to be your hair restoration surgeon.

In the News – Dr Farjo Transplanted a Patient Live on the Internet – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Snippet from the article:

Sports pundit and former-England footballer Michael Gray has undergone the first UK hair transplant to be streamed live on the internet. Some 22,000 people with strong stomachs watched Dr Bessam Farjo perform the surgery, which began at 10am yesterday morning and finished at 6.50pm.

Dr Farjo took more than 5,000 healthy hair follicles from the back of Mr Gray’s head and implanted them at the front of the scalp after making hundreds of incisions.

I must admit that I had no idea who Michael Gray was, but I am familiar with Dr. Farjo’s work (and he is a contributor to BaldingBlog). With this webcast, Dr. Farjo was able to show off surgery to thousands of curious viewers, and in a year or so, Michael Gray will be able to see the full results of this procedure.

Can You Transplant Into a Lot of Miniaturized Hair? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

I realize that every patient is different and requires a different assessment. But I was wondering if you could give me your general approach in my case.

I’m 25 and have been on Propecia for 5 years. I have hair all over my head, but I’m balding in a Class VI pattern. The Propecia definitely slowed the balding, but it’s gotten to the point where my hair is very thin and you can see my entire scalp through it.

I’d like to do a hair transplant – but can you do transparent into a sea of miniaturized hair? How would it usually work?

This is what Prince William seems to have as well. He might make a good transplant patient, but maybe he does not want one.

You, on the other hand, can send me photos of your scalp with good views showing the problem (hair wet and dry when groomed). I can then specifically answer your question during a telephone consultation, which I do often. You can email the photos here (and reference this blog post).

Any Miraculous Results from Unusual Hair Loss Cases? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi Dr.

What is the most unusual case you have come across during your time dealing with hair loss patients.

Has there been any miraculous results or otherwise unusual results that may give some of us extra hope?

Block Quote

The usual hair loss cause in men the vast majority of the time is genetics. There’s not much you can do to change what your mom and dad gave you. At times the hair loss is not uniform or symmetrical and this leads to some interesting patterns. In many patients, I have seen one side balding much faster than the other. Unusual hair loss patterns in men include a completely Norwood class 7 pattern except for the first 1/2inch of the hairline, which is completely intact. Many of these men grow out the frontal hair and use it as a strange looking comb-back hair style, and it works.

For men, we can postpone the inevitable with drugs such as Propecia (finasteride 1mg) or Rogaine (minoxidil 5% topical). I suspect in the coming years, there may be new drugs or other medical breakthroughs such as cloning, but that may take years just to get FDA clearance.

The hair transplantation methods of the past have created many interesting problems today. In the old days, plugs were put into the crown before the hair was lost, and then as the balding progressed, an island of plugs remained in the middle of a bald crown — a very weird look. Hair transplant surgery today provides awesome results. Not to toot our horn, but our patients seem to think they get miraculous results… which is a prejudice induced because of the life changing nature of the process! Can My First Hair Transplant Be a Megasession? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hi, I’ve got a “virgin” scalp, ie. no previous hair transplants.

Although, I’m not there yet, my hairloss looks like it will eventually end up in a Norwood 5-6 pattern.

Taking that info for face value I have the following question. Assuming a patient will need at least two to three procedures, is it better for someone with a virgin scalp to have their initial transplant be a large “mega-session?”

In other words, is it harder to have a larger subsequent done down the road because of laxity issues caused by a previous smaller surgery?

Basically, is it better to knock-out a mega-session first while the scalp has its best scalp laxity?

Thanks

Block Quote

Generally, we do not preemptively transplant hair to non-balding areas and prefer to treat the impending balding area with medications like Propecia. How do you know you will end up as a Norwood 5 or 6?

We pioneered the “megasession”, but just because we can do it does not mean we recommend it to everyone. Every case is different, and both the long term and short term goals must be discussed with each patient. For example, one patient may choose to have several smaller sessions over their lifetime as they are balding. Or another patient may wait until they are bald and have one big megasession.

Having a good scalp laxity works at making a megasession on the first surgery easier to do. Scar laxity usually returns to preoperative status after a surgery. If you have an FUE procedure instead of a strip surgery, the surgeon will take out what you need… and take out more and more of what you need as your balding progresses. No recurrent scars with FUE is clearly an advantage, but without seeing you, I am not sure how what I said applies to you.

Hair Loss InformationStrip Scar Length and Graft Numbers – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

If I don’t require to have a lot of grafts placed on my scalp, and I want a strip surgery, can the doctor cut a small strip of hair, lets say, 3-4 inches in length so the linear scar is not big and doesn’t go from ear to ear?

My other question, if a person doesn’t require to many grafts placed on the scalp, why do the surgeons still cut a long strip that is from ear to ear?

Thank you

Block Quote

This is one of the things the doctor should go over with you during a consultation. There are many patients who do this! Requiring a small number of grafts will give you a shorter scar. Some patients wait a year after their first small surgery for another small surgery, and they end up with a single short scar (replaced from the old). Many patients are not informed about this opportunity prior to coming to see me, but learn of the option during the first consultation. This is a part of the Master Plan we create with every patient.

On the flip side… if you want to have as many grafts as possible in one surgery, a larger scar is necessary to obtain the grafts needed.

Hair Loss InformationReCell Spray-On Skin in Hair Transplant Surgery? – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Dr.Rassman/Dr.Pak,
Thought you might be interested in the following – ReCell Spray-On Skin

This technology was recently used to great effect here in the UK on a young child suffering from second-degree burns – Second Degree Burns Are Healed With ReCell Skin Spray

Do you think ReCell could be adapted for use in hair transplant surgery?

Interesting find, but scarring from hair transplant surgery has more to do with the tension created by the cut on the scalp (not a burn on the tissue or tissue damage). So I don’t think the product would have a great effect on hair transplant scars.
