Bald Man Thrilled With His New Hair And New Look
After 5 years, this patient came to see me to show me the transition of his new look. Considering the degree of balding he had when he came in, his results were spectacular. He did comment that no one ever noticed the change from a bald look to this hairy look. That is what surprised him most. The two pictures tell the story without words.
Miniaturization, What Actually Happens?
Is hair thickness dependent on which phase it is in right now? The hair I shed is much different than the hair I can cut off. It is less pigmented, much thinner, and less robust. I mean MUCH thinner and not just some but all of them. Is this normal? Are hairs in telogen thinner than in the anagen phase?
When a hair miniaturizes, it becomes less thick, losing its mass. It also loses its pigment, becoming white, and it often stops growing. This hair may just hang there for a long time, not contributing to your overall hair mass.

Bald Spots Behind the Ears
I am a 37 year old black male. I have recently been getting bald spots on the back of my head, right behind my ears only. My hair is very coarse and for this reson I have been relaxing my hair for over 15 years but never received any bald spots. Right before the balding occurred there was intense itching

Balding in the US Congress
I just wanted to share with you our latest infographic: Bald Power
Feel free to give me a shout if you need an alternative sized version for you blog. Hope you like it!
Feedback appreciated.
I meant to post this a little while ago, but it slipped through the cracks. The graphic is quite large, so click the image at right to see the full size.
I haven’t looked at photos of Congress members for myself, but does your graphic account for thinning hair or strictly those that are bald? The infographic is nice if your numbers are right, but you spelled “United” wrong twice.
The presence of balding in the 5-8% range amongst members of the legislators (more men than women) is much less than the general population. In men, the balding rate (some degree of hair loss) is about 50% in men over 45, the age of most of our legislators. Except for Eisenhower, there has not been a bald president since before World War II.
I have written before that men with hair on the head have a better chance at getting elected than balding men. There is considerable prejudice against balding men in the population, and I’ve written about that here and here.
Minoxidil and Propecia Together
hey doc,
im 22 yrs old, experiencing receding hair line, and thinning of hair. i have been using propecia for the past few wks, and will continue using it for a while. should i also use rogaine? i wanted to know if it would benefit to use both or not. also, if i use rogaine, can i use a monoxydil subsititute, found at local grocery stores instead? will the cheaper generic product give the same intended effect as rogaine? please let me know.
thanks for your help.
Minoxidil is the generic form of Rogaine. Both are over the counter medications, sold at many places, you do not need a doctor’s prescription, like you do for Propecia.
I generally tell my patients to just take Propecia alone for at least 8 months to a year to be able to gauge its effectiveness. When you combine both Propecia and Rogaine from the beginning, you will not be able to tell if any effect is due to just one of the drugs or the combination, and you will be incurring the cost of both drugs for as long as you want the hair loss stopped or slowed down. If you find that Propecia by itself is effective and you are happy with the results, you have saved the cost of Rogaine for that period. If you are one of the few patients who do not get the desired results with Propecia, then you can stop taking the drug.
The two medications work differently. Minoxidil must be applied twice a day and it is messy. Propecia is a pill that should be taken every morning. Propecia attacks the hormone DHT that causes hair loss. Minoxidil was developed as an oral medication to treat high blood pressure and was found to have a side effect, which is the ability to grow hair in a small percentage of the population who took the drug. Minoxidil was then approved as a hair loss treatment in a topical solution called Rogaine. The topical Minoxidil can cause blood pressure drops and skin reactions, so you need to be careful taking it, and it does not work very well in the front of your head. Although Propecia does not impact regrowth in the frontal area most of the time, it will slow down or stop the loss in the front, particularly in young men.

Be open with your doctor, never be embarrassed
Thanks. I did have a checkup with my dermatologist but I was too embarrassed to mention the mild testicular ache. Should I be more open in the future? I thought it wasn’t much to worry about and its gone now. If it was persist I would have mentioned it.
Never be shy about talking about anything to your doctor. Always speak from the heart, even if you feel that the doctor might not understand you well enough. We hear it all and we don’t make judgments, just diagnosis and treatment recommendations, when indicated. I thought I would share a story about an HIV patient who didn’t know until I tested him and everything that surrounded this particular patient and what I did, what happened to me and a follow-up as well: https://baldingblog.com/hiv-and-hair-transplants/

I started using minoxidil to stimulate my beard. Will it harm my existing beard hairs?
The drug minoxidil will not harm existing hairs on your head or face

Bell’s Palsy and Hair Loss?
Hi doc, i have had a case of Bells Palsy due to extreme stress 1 year ago. After that experience i have had my hairline on the RIGHT recede. Is this due to Bells Palsy? does it have any connection with hairloss? Or is it because im constantly stressing about my condition of Bells Palsys? i have yet to recover 100%. I am about 85% and this is as far as will ever recover. Also the Bells Palsys affected my right side of my face. Please, any help would be great help as i am only 23 living day to day to try and hide my hairline. thank you doc.
Bell’s palsy is probably a viral condition. Extreme stress can cause acceleration of genetic hair loss, so that is how these two conditions are probably linked.
