Common, Yet Sad Story

i am 32 years old/ my hair has been receeding slowly for 10 years. my entire life has taken a different course then what i would ever would have imagined. my life is one of boring structure and panic, this disease has ruined my youth and the saddest part/ nobody knows but me.

Many balding men suffer in silence. I remember a psychologist that I transplanted in two sessions with about 4500 grafts in total. He told me that he had been in analysis for his balding problem for over 15 years. It made no sense to him that he was so devastated over his hair loss, but it nevertheless made him suffer. He had taken some medications as well to deal with his depression.

After the transplants were finished, he said that he could not understand why he had not done it sooner. He thought, in hindsight, that had he transplanted his hair 20 years ago, he would not have had to suffer with the problem for all of those years. But the reality was really something different, because only the newer technologies would have given him a normal head of hair. Had he chosen surgery 20 years earlier, the results would not have been a walk in the park.

Aside from that anecdote, it is still important to find out why you feel that your hair loss has ruined your life. It might be worth talking to a good therapist and explore how hair loss has affected your life. You are in control of your life, so take charge and do something about getting it together and stop suffering in silence. Look for help.

Here’s two more eyebrow transplant-related emails I’ve received…

In 2002 I cut my eye brows off. But they grew back very thin some parts did even grow back, like the ends. Only the inner part would grow but not so thick. Anyway to date they are not growing at all. My hair line has also thinned out about an inch. I do not know what is going on but I am tired of drawing it on. Please help.

Eyebrows can be successfully transplanted, if the eyebrows you had have not returned after a couple of years. The eyebrow hair is taken from the scalp hair, and as such will have to be trimmed about three times a week and cut on an angle for hair shape. I posted a blog entry recently about this: Eyebrow Transplants. You need to be evaluated for the hairline loss. Read my responses addressing female hair loss, as they do apply to you.

I am considering eyebrow hair transplantation and I have many questions. Does having permanent makeup interfere with the procedure? Should it be removed first or will it cause scarring to the follicle? Also, does the transplant have to follow the original eyebrow hairline or will it grow in any follicle (if I wanted it slightly raised for a more youthful appearance for instance)? Do eyebrow transplants yield a high success rate? I noticed you listed some special summer prices but they were specified for the strip method. What is the cost for the FOX method. Finally, I live near Riverside Ca, zip code 92313, is there an office near me?

Permanent makeup is cosmetic tattooing and is permanent by its nature. It will not impact an eyebrow hair transplant. You should be evaluated first, before any surgery is considered. Eyebrows can be angled for more lift, but it is difficult to angle them for less lift. The success of eyebrow transplants are high. NHI’s summer fees have been reduced by 10% but the FUE approach has not been discounted and still is priced at about twice the price per hair/graft as a traditional strip method of transplantation. Our closest office to you would be in the Beverly Hills area.

Confused About Dr Strick’s Alopecia Areata Treatment

hi dr.,
i have a question about dr. richard strick. i went to see him because of your very positive comments about him on this site regarding his treatments of alopecia areata using his dncb treatment.

1. He claims its successful 90% of the time, if it is that successful, i would imagine the fda would approve it & other doctors would use it to treat patients because that would be a huge deal for those who have alopecia areata.

2. After speaking with him and his staff, I have heard about 2-3 contradictions (or at least apparent). For example one of his staff said “it does not work on body hair” & he said no it definitely does work on body hair. (different conversations at different times)

Basically my question to you is, do you think or would you put it past dr. strick to outright lie or maybe exaggerate about the effectiveness of this treatment for whatever reasons he may have? Im not sure what to make of this, i want to have confidence in this treatment but my confidence is shaken.

Are you sure you heard him right? What you experienced sounds like confusing signals and you should go back to him to get clarification. To my knowledge, he does not use this dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) treatment for body hair alopecia areata.

I provided photos of a patient that I met with who had a great result from the treatment, so the effectiveness was clear to me. I can’t vouch for success rates, but I’d be honest with him and ask Dr. Strick to clarify some of the issues you had from your previous visit.

Hair Loss InformationFemale Genetic Hair Loss – Hair Loss Information – Balding Blog

Hello,

I am a 25 year old woman and I have been losing my hair since the age of 12. All of the women in my family have been affected, but I am the first to lose it as such a young age and actually have it the worst. I am generally bald in the front and have thin hair everywhere else, but it’s not bald. I currently am using a weave, but I’ve noticed that is has actually become worse and I’d really like to lose the weave and have a natural hair line. Is New Hair catered for men only, and if not, can I be helped?

First of all, you should see a good doctor who knows about hair loss in women. Since you are in New York, I would recommend you set up an appointment with Dr. Robert Bernstein at (201) 585-1115. He has offices in Manhattan and New Jersey and can address your unique problem. It sounds like you do have genetic female hair loss, but first let’s get an expert to determine it. You must have a full check-up to determine if you have any metabolic diseases as well. For more questions and answers about female hair loss, please click here for previous blog entries.

Consumer Driven Website Appears on Internet ‘attacking’ Doctors Who are Unethical

The ethics of plumbers, contractors, auto-mechanics, and many other have always been questioned. Because there are a few rotten apples in every bucket of apples, that does not mean that all apples in the bucket are rotten. This metaphor applies to plastic surgeons, all professionals including cosmetic dentists and hair restoration surgeons, as well of which I am one of them. So here is the site I just mentioned: https://www.angelfire.com/indie/hairtransplant/

Some of my quotes have been used to validate doctors who have been targeted by this website. I will not make any reference to particular doctors or groups of doctors nor endorse this website as a quality source of information. I do, however, hope that everyone researches the doctors that they choose and their research should include: industry bulletin boards, consumer driven websites, and the state medical boards which have records of doctors who have infractions on their medical license. As a consumer, it is a ‘BUYER BEWARE” problem for everyone wanting to get cosmetic surgery of any type. I see, too often, patients who did not use their common sense when selecting doctors. I always tell patients to ask the doctor to introduce you to a few of his/her patients so that you can see the quality of the work they do and also to understand something about their humanity.

Does Propecia or Finasteride Cause Pain on Ejaculation?

I have been taking Finasteride for over 6 years. (I am 32 now) Over the last year or two I have been getting an intense pain when I ejaculate. The pain feels like it radiates from the base of my penis, then it dies down. It feels a bit like a burning sensation.

The pain doesn’t occur every time I ejaculate, but quite often it does. I wonder if this may be caused by Finasteride in some way – such as the drug’s effect on the prostate. The only other side effect I have noticed is watery semen.

std

Painful ejaculation may be a sign of serious medical issue such as sexually transmitted disease (especially the burning sensation), prostatitis, prostate cancer, etc. I doubt it is related to a drug side effect especially after 6 years but such reports of pain with ejaculation are appearing over forums on the internet. As their appears to be legal actions taken against Merck (manufacturer of Propecia), the motivation for such reporting may be questionable and I do realize it is a very sensitive topic for many readers. In any event, you need to see your primary care provider or a urologist to see if there are medical issues associated with this complaint.

I realize we answer many questions about side effects on Propecia here on Baldingblog. However, not all sexual or penis related symptoms are related to Propecia.

Pantogar and Female Hair Loss

I am a 22 year old woman living in essex i have a problem with hair loss wich worries me alot i have long hair but now my hair has gone weak and unhealthy and i would like to know ways in which i can do to prevent the hair loss because i know its not normal in women of this age. im takin ‘pantogar’ which is a hair loss treatment but i dont know if its good enough. if theres another solution other than transplantation please let me know. thankyou i will be waiting for your reply

Pantogar is a homeopathic, nutritional supplement which is promoted for hair and nail problems. It is claimed to be used in the treatment of early hair loss, but there is no proven science for this supplement to show how it may work, or that it is worthwhile and valuable.

The diagnosis of female hair loss requires a close examination, something that can not be done over this distance. Unlike men, a woman’s hair loss situation is not easy to diagnose and treat. You need to see a doctor who specializes in female hair loss near your home. Try using the physician search at ISHRS.org and HairTransplantNetwork.com. Sorry, but there is not much else I can offer you over the internet.

Could Fasting 2 Days a Week Slow Down the Pace of Hair Loss?

Dear Dr

There has been a lot of interest in the UK about intermittent fasting where an individual eats normally for 5 days a week and then fasts for two (not on consecutive days). There was a BBC horizon programme where it was shown to reduce IGH-1 (growth hormone) and improve insulin sensitivity. It is claimed that when a body goes into fasting mode the body starts to repair itself better by repairing cells rather than producing more cells. It was suggested that this may be beneficial to age related diseases, cancer etc.

Do you think this would slow down the pace of hairloss if insulin sensitivity improved and/or IGH-1 was reduced? Has research been done on this approach? Your thoughts would be appreciated

Genetic hair loss is not a disease. Balding is a genetic trait, like your height, body build, hair color, the way you look, etc. Even if this ‘fasting’ has value (which I would doubt), it will not change your genetics. Significant fasting can actually accelerate hair loss. You are what you are and although your patterned balding can be modified with drugs or transplants, your balding pattern is fixed in your genetics.
