Creatine and Body Hair Loss

I recently read your entry about monohydrate creatine…I did a little reading & it seems that quite a few doctors think it causes hair loss. I take ce2 ethel ester creatine (28yr old male,caucasian), are you aware if this product can cause body hair loss? or would this most likely be restricted to head hair?

“A little reading” can be dangerous, because you will always find conflicting facts or opinions.

The good news is that you have a choice! If you believe it causes hair loss, you have a choice not to take it. If you are taking creatine for bodybuilding and you are also worried about hair loss, you have to make the choice.

It is my opinion that creatine does not cause hair loss. It is also my opinion that creatine does not have much effect in bodybuilding. I have personally taken it for a year and I have always found harder workouts made me stonger/bulkier (without creatine).

Photos – Day After Hair Transplants

I have thin hair in front. I am in the public eye and can not take off more than a day or two. What will I look like after a hair transplant?

To answer your question, I took some pictures of a person who is 50, who had a hair transplant (1,046 grafts) and came in for a hair wash by us the next day. He has enough hair to cover the transplants. Good washing will guarantee, as much as possible, that any scabbing is removed. With the use of medications, we can keep swelling on most people to undetectable levels. He can go out in public the day after surgery without any real detection.

The photo on the left was taken before his procedure — the photo in the middle and the photo on the right are 1 day after.

Crusting on recipient grafts and orderly placement of hair grafts (photo)

This patient is one week after surgery and did not aggressively wash his hair so that crusts form around each graft. Crusting comes about because of leakage of serum from the recipient site. This can be washed off as it occurs with a good washing technique that we deploy for all of our patients?. It will take a few weeks for these crusts to shed with good shampooing. The grafts are secure provided that the crusts are not plucked of the grafts could come out. The grafts are placed like soldiers, all aligned in an orderly pattern. This is not how hair grows as growth is randomly distributed

I have pimples 6 weeks after my hair transplant (photo)

Pimples may or may not reflect an infection but a doctor should make that call. Sometimes the hair spicules react that have been left behind and they cause pimples which usually spontaneously drain on their own, but it can also be an infection so your surgoun should evaluate it.

Dad bald, 3 brothers bald 1 brother not bald, what are my chances?

Question

Dad is bald at 68 but I he had most of his hair at 30 I think

Eldest brother at 31 is balding at the back but barely any hair loss, don’t think his temples are bad but would never notice

Next brother at 28 shaved his head

Next one at 25 shaved his head

Next one at 22 has significant hair loss noticeable when he puts his hair up

What are my chances? It is supposed to be a 50/50 on the mom’s chromosomes yeah?

Please god help me as this is ruining me

If you are 16, you won’t know yet. As you get closer to 21, you might see some balding changes. By the time you are 26, you will know. If you want to know in advance of what you see, connect with a doctor who has a HARICHECK instrument (https://baldingblog.com/haircheck-test-how-it-is-done-video/) and have your hair measured yearly which will pick up early balding before you can see it.

Dealing with Unhappy Patients

Dr. Rassman, how do you deal with patients that are not happy with their results, or suffer complications, such as shock loss, grafts not growing, and incorrectly misplaced hair. How often do you encounter this? Thanks.

My philosophy on patient care is that a doctor and patient relationship should be a partnership. Both parties should understand one another and treat one another with respect. I found that through the years from my days as a surgeon, mutual respect and partnership have always kept my patients happy. Setting realistic expectations are much of it, and listening to what people are telling you helps work through the partnership. We have had monthly open house events for the past 14 years where patients who have had surgery show off their results and prospective patients can talk to them and see what they got. Prospective patients can also see a live surgery (just imagine that we were doing this for 14 years on monthly basis in every office we had). Of course there have been unhappy patients along the way, but the partnership and respect goes a long way in resolving any unforeseen issues and a good dialogue usually does not pit one side against the other.

Possible DUPA

This man wanted a hair transplant and came to a colleague asking for one. If his donor area was examined under a hand microscope, it would show either very low density or DUPA. In either case, he would be an unlikely candidate for a hair transplant.

Can Dandruff affect growth from a hair transplant?

No, Dandruff is common and more pronounced after a hair transplant because skin turns over more frequently (skin shedding). If you are concerned about the growth and you are at least eight months since the surgery, then go back and speak with your doctor comparing your expectations to your doctor’s expectations.

Post-Operative Care and Scalp Flaking

Dr. Rassman, I think you are running a brilliant blog. After reading several posts, I am encouraged to share my own views and ask a question. I recently got a FUE megasession done in Europe and am pleased with the results, atleast till now (just 2 weeks post-op). While going through this website, I personally felt that it would be a great idea to start a new category called ‘Post-Operative Care’ since I am going through this phase myself and can feel the need to interact with others out there on the topic. Don’t worry, I don’t think it will scare away any prospective patients. It will only lend credibility to the transplant procedure.

On that note, I also have a question. I am using Minoxidil 5% to help with the growth of new hair. But my scalp in the recipient area shows considerable dryness / development of flakes when the scalp is dry. I was recommended to apply a hydrating lotion on the scalp. Would you agree with this advice and can you recommned a good hydrating cream /lotion meant for hair?

The results of the FUE will take 5-8 months to show, so then and only then, will you know the value of what you had done. Minoxidil does cause dryness and flaking. Any non-alcoholic creams will work. Also, try a variety of hair conditioners as well. Take risks until you find the right one. Ask your hair dresser, as they may know the best that is available in your country.
