This patient is not going bald. He may be classified as a Norwood 2 or as having a mature hair line. He had the surgery because he did not like his raised corner hair line. He wanted a lower, relatively straight juvenile hair line (he once had). He was old enough (over 30 years old) where chances of him losing more hair or shock hair loss was minimal. He understood this is a cosmetic procedure and was made aware he may need more than one surgery to achieve the density he was looking for.

He chose the FUE method of graft harvesting since he wanted the flexibility to keep his hair buzzed or kept short.

The total number of grafts he received was 1600 grafts. He had two separate FUE procedures of 800 grafts with each surgery spaced out about 1 year apart. The final result you see is after 2 years. If you click on the photos for a close up ZOOM you can see that the density achieved was close to normal (non-balding) hair density. The reason he needed TWO (2) separate surgeries was because you cannot fit 1600 grafts in such a tight space. Each graft can be about the size of a rice grain. After the hairs have grown out, you can fit another graft in between the spaces.

He occasionally attends our monthly Open House events if anyone would like to meet him in person.

Fue White Scars in the Donor Area

In reference to this question about donor healing after FUE: https://baldingblog.com/2007/05/09/1-year-post-op-photo-of-fue-donor-area/

How often do you see patients who don’t have white spots from the FUE? I recently got a procedure done by a doctor that promised me no white scar formation, but all I’ve read online since then is that its inevitable to get white scars. Seeing this picture of your patient gave me hope. I have fair skin and coarse hair (I’m Asian). I’m hoping to hear good news.

Scarring is the result of two things: (1) the size of the instrument used and (2) the healing properties of your scalp. Clearly, the surgeon only has control of #1.

Taking Rogaine for 9 Years and Want to Switch to Propecia Now

I’m 30 and have been taking rogaine for the past 8 or 9 years. I recently got a prescription for propecia. Should I gradually get off of the rogaine?

Assuming that you have benefits from the Rogaine, you should assume that your hair is minoxidil dependent. That means that if you stop the minoxidil, the hair may fall out. Propecia will not prevent this phenemonon. I would suggest that you stay on the Rogaine and get your hair mapped out for miniaturization before starting the Propecia so you know what you are doing.

Gabapentin and hair loss

I started taking Gabapentin at 600mg a day seven months ago and noticed my hair has been coming out bad. At first I thought it was Keppra I was on but I stopped that in November and it just continued. It never occurred to me that it might be the Gabapentin because I was assured this was an incredibly safe drug. Used to have gorgeous hair. Now it’s thin where the bangs would be and all over really. Can see my scalp in areas. I have no male pattern baldness in my family. If anything we all have too much hair!

Gabapentin is an anti-seizure medication. Hair loss is a rare side effect.

Teen Dyed Hair 6 Times in 8 Months

hi, I’m 17, and about 8 months ago i started dying my hair. I am naturally ginger and have dyed it around 6 times in the last 8 months. I have noticed alot recently that my hair is falling out around the crown, but the hair that falls out appears to have a root on but does not have ginger half to it. whereas if i tug a hair out it is half guinger half black. This is causing me alot of concern and im frequently being bullied about my thing hair at the back. I am growing the colour out back to my natural colour hoping that the dying is causing my hair to fall out. But I dont think it is this because the roots are falling out, plaese advise me and help me. It will be appreciated so much

Thankyou.

Leave your hair alone and wait until it replaces itself. Your frequent dying may have damaged some of the hair. Use a good quality shampoo and conditioner, no dyes. Hair grows out at a rate of 1/2 inch per month, so it will take you 6 months to grow out 3 inch long new hair.

Telogen Effluvium from Depakote, now 2 years later my hair is miniaturized.

I had drug induced TE from Depakote. I stopped the medication almost 2 years ago. My hair has grown back and I don’t have MPB. But my hair is miniaturized all over. Is it normal and permanent? Thanks.

If you are saying that the hair, when it came back, was of a smaller caliber, then this may be a permanent effect. I would have to see you and examine you with a trichoscope to understand the problem you pose

Gho Clinic Says Their FUE Allows the Donor Hair to Regrow?!

Dr. Rassman
i have stumbled upon a hair transplant clinic in Prague called the “GHO clinic” which offer a proprietary FUE in which apparently the donor hair will regrow (page here)

i don’t know how well the human body would repair a partially punched out hair follicle, i just want to ask if this procedure is actually hair multiplication available today or just someone trying to make his FUE look better than everyone else’s?

I just chaired the session at the annual ISHRS meeting in Amsterdam and had Dr. Coen Gho as one of the speakers. I had lost my voice, so I could not comment as the chair of that session, but considering that you asked me about him, I will use this as a forum to speak my opinion on what I heard.

Dr. Gho reported that he did 1500 patients with his “cloning” procedure. If I had to give a score to the material he presented using a 1-10 scale for scientific credibility, I’d score it a 1, with 1 being the lowest possible. His science was pathetic, with slides that were blurred and blackened out so that there was really nothing to see. He claimed that his FUE technique cut the follicular units in half longitudinally, and that the part that remained regrew hair, but there was no proof of this in any of the material he showed. He did not show any patient results and certainly was never reviewed by any credible agency or physician.

Partially divided follicles have been well studied by many prominent researchers. Despite their attempts, none succeed to create even an equal amount of hair (equal to the original divided follicular units). Dr. Kim (Korean researcher) had done some wonderful research on this very subject and failed to do what Dr. Gho claims. I believe that what I heard from Dr. Gho is marketing hype without any evidence of any hairs regrowing.

terrible hair transplant

This young man had a hair transplant by someone that didn’t understand the art and science of hair transplantation. There is no hairline design and large 2-5 hair grafts in the front of the hairline which looks pluggy. The repair for this should be relatively easy for me, but first I would have to see him and then make a plan with him.
