2 months finasteride, minoxidil & microneedling

In just two months, this young man stimulated early hair growth that can only get better over time. It is always amazing how quickly microneedling accelerates the growth process. Of course, we never would know if it would have grow without the microneedling, but with the huge number of men who presented these results, one has to believe that the three approaches (finasteride, minoxidil and microneedling) are intertwined.

In the News – Bald Chimp Looks Human, Still Throws Feces

This is the 2nd bald chimp in the news this month. You may recall we mentioned Jambo the chimpanzee from the UK with alopecia… and now here’s Guru from India!

The article points out that Guru still gets down to business by throwing his poo at visitors to the zoo, so at least his alopecia hasn’t left him feeling depressed.

From the photos, it looks like the drug may have stabilized the loss. It is possibly slightly better but most important it is not worse. If you were to stop the medication, I’l bet you will lose a lot of hair.

In the News – Controversy About Actors with Hair Playing Bald Roles?

Clearly, some people know how to exploit balding in the Hollywood setting. The San Francisco Chronicle looks into actors that are shaving their heads for movie roles, instead of going with the naturally bald actors. From the article:

Timothy Olyphant plays Agent 47, the bald assassin in the new action movie “Hitman.” The controversy? Why have the well-coiffed Olyphant shave his head when there are so many bald actors who are perfect for the role?

20 Year Plan for Hair Loss in a 20 Year Old Male

You really can’t predict your hair loss, especially if you treat it with a drug like Finasteride, which can, in some men, stop the process. A NW Class 2 should not be transplanted, and I would recommend that you don’t rush to do a hair transplant unless you see real balding. Build a good Master Plan with a great doctor, and then follow it.

In the News – FDA Rejects Proscar and Avodart for Prevention of Prostate Cancer

An FDA advisory committee has voted against approval of two drugs for the prevention of prostate cancer because of a link to increased risk of high-grade, aggressive forms of the disease.

GlaxoSmithKline’s Avodart and Merck’s Proscar are approved to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate, which is common among men over the age of 50. In studies, both drugs showed a nearly 25% reduction in the risk of developing low-grade forms of prostate cancer compared to participants taking a placebo.

FDA medical officer Yang-Min Ning, MD, PhD, says such forms of cancer “propose very little threat to men during their lifetime.”

FDAThere is a great deal of politics going on that I really do not understand, but even with this panel rejection, I would not advise my own son to stop taking 1mg finasteride to treat his hair loss.

It is clear that finasteride at the 5mg dose seems to prevent prostate cancer to some degree, but it wasn’t enough for the FDA to label it as a preventive medication for prostate cancer. People will ultimately need to make their own decisions in regards to this medication, but keep in mind that at the 1mg finasteride dose that is prescribed to treat hair loss, there is really no evidence one way or the other that it could be a problem or even if it will prevent prostate cancer. More will be written by other societies and I will fill in the readers of this site once we know where it all “falls out”.

I’ve ignored all polls up until now and will rely on the statistics from the past US Presidential elections to call this one for Barack Obama (and a day before the election, no less). Some may say, “But Dr Rassman, clearly the polls are showing Obama has a gigantic lead anyway!” … and to those people, I can only point out that it’s entirely because of his beautiful hairline. Ignore tax policy, ignore social programs, ignore foreign policy — this election is 100% hair related. People always vote for the hairiest, right?

In the News – Gray Hair Protects Us from Cancer?

GREY hair may be unwelcome, but the processes that produce it are now better understood and could be protecting us from cancer.

Cells called melanocytes produce the pigments that colour hair and their numbers are kept topped up by stem cells. Hair goes grey when the number of stem cells in hair follicles declines. Now Emi Nishimura of Tokyo Medical and Dental University in Japan and colleagues have found what causes this decline in mice.

21 and thinking about a hair transplant

i’m only 21 so i can’t really get a hair transplant until down the line. i got put on 2.5 mg minoxidil earlier this year and i passed on using fin. i’m fine with using this pill for the future because it hasn’t really affected my day to day life in any way and my health is fine, but i was just wondering if it’d even be worth getting a hair transplant down the line if my balding is genetic and it will keep slowly spreading, wouldn’t i have to get like several transplants over time?

I make my living doing hair transplants, but I almost never have done it on someone of your age. I wait until 25-6 before even considering it. Maybe the oral minoxidil will work and you will not bald. Give the drug a chance and stay on it.

In the News – Is Latisse a Cure for Baldness?

Allergan believes it may have a cure for baldness in the form of Latisse/Lumigan, its glaucoma drug-cum-eyelash enhancer. EVP R&D Scott Whitcup told investors on Allergan’s Q2 2009 conference call:

“We’re in the midst of looking at a number of [selections] by Bimatoprost [the chemical name for Latisse and Lumigan] for hair growth on the scalp.

Unlike Lumigan for glaucoma, we don’t have the eight years plus of clinical trials data so we’re sort of starting from scratch.

It’s a little too early to give you the final timeline but we are working as quickly as we can to get a formulation, get the pre-clinical work done and into the clinic and we’ll update you as soon as we have more from timeline.”

The enthusiasm is high for this approach to hair loss, but we really don’t know if it will work on the bald skin. We are all waiting to see what the research tells us, but the conclusions may be years away.
