Erectile dysfunction might well be the “canary in a coal mine” of men’s health, indicating that men need to “metaphorically evacuate” before they develop life-threatening disorders, said Arie Parnham, MD, from the Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester, United Kingdom.

More than half of all men 40 to 70 years of age have experienced erectile dysfunction — defined in EAU guidelines as “an inability to attain or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual performance” — according to the Massachusetts Male Aging Study.

Many of these men have multiple comorbidities, the most prevalent of which is coronary artery disease, Parnham explained during his presentation at the European Association of Urology 2020 Congress.

The link between erectile dysfunction and coronary artery disease was first made by Italian researchers in a 2003 study of 300 men with acute chest pain and angiographically documented coronary artery disease. The prevalence of erectile dysfunction in the study cohort was 49%, and in 70% of those men, the onset occurred in the 40 months preceding their diagnosis of coronary artery disease.

Then, a 44% increase in the risk for cardiovascular events, a 62% increase in the risk for myocardial infraction, and a 25% increase in the risk for all-cause mortality were seen in a 2013 systemic review of 14 studies — a pool of 92,757 men with erectile dysfunction — with a mean follow-up of 6.1 years.

“Younger people were at higher risk” the systemic review showed, said Parnham, which “highlights the importance of screening in this group.”

I am not impressed with the dermaroller. If you have hair loss, treat it properly with minoxidil and/or finasteride for a male and you know you are giving it your best shot

You may be brushing or combing to roughly. Use a wide tooth comb or brush and see if that changes things.

I want to start going to the gym but I heard that doing exercice can accelerate my hair loss and therefore making the finasteride useless.. Is that true or can I start going to the gym?

Exercise all you want while on finasteride. No problem

 

First of all, many thanks for this great blog. I’m a regular reader.

My question is about mild shampoos. I often read contradictory comments about whether or not washing your hair on a daily basis could cause hair loss particularly when these extra mild shampoos contain ingredients like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate and all parabens, that may cause skin irritation, drying, and hair loss due to follicle damage. So if someone has to wash his hair every day, is using a shampoo without those ingredients is better for the scalp and the follicule ?

Shampoos and washing your hair does not cause hair loss in general. In men genetic traits (androgenic alopecia – male pattern balding) causes hair loss. In women hair loss can also be genetic or hormonal (example: menopause).

Shampoos have ingredients that can irritate the skin/ scalp in some people and that can be an issue, but it is not the main cause in terms of hair loss. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and its likes are just detergents that wash way dirt in the most basic sense. Some believe these chemicals may be too harsh and there are other alternative (more expensive) shampoos that do not contain such chemicals. If you believe your shampoo has something to do with hair loss then it is rather easy to change your shampoo over reading through blog posts and conflicting Internet information.

In general, if you have the genes for hair loss (male pattern hair loss) washing your hair with or without the Sodium Lauryl Sulfate as it’s ingredient will likely not be a factor. There is, however, a multi-billion dollar industry that will try to convince you otherwise.
