Weightlifting = Accelerated Balding?

Hi Sir,

I have been doing weight lifting exercises for the last one year, I heard that weight lifting exercises increase the testosterone levels by 40%; it will in turn produce 40% more DHT, there by baldness accelerate. I like to be a body builder, please suggest me.

I also heard that finasteride helps to decelerate bald ness by 30% only,as it inhibit 5AR-2 by 70%, but, how can I stop, the baldness aggression, more than 90%,

I would like to ask you two options, which one is better to supress baldness as much as possible

  1. Taking finasteride two tabs (morning & night)
  2. Taking Dutasteride

The data on dutasteride for treating hair loss is not available although many doctors feel it is more effective than finasteride. The dose response relationship between finasteride and hair growth shows that the maximum impact occurs at the 1mg level. There is no evidence to show that the higher dose is better, but other than sexual side effects, there is no problem doubling the dose.

I did have a patient come into my office today who was on Propecia for a year with no sexual side effects and then switched to Dutasteride (Avodart) about a year ago with significant libido and Erectile dysfunction reported. This is not an unusual report, but he personally did not care about his sex drive, while most of my patients do express sex as one of their priorities and would not accept the decreased libido.

With regard to weightlifting, I am unaware of any direct connection to normal increases in testosterone from physical activity and hair loss. Many of the hair loss related complaints tend to come from men who take supplements that have some steroid type substance in it.

Just be patient. By the 8th month you can expect to see 90 percent of the growth from your hair transplant. Some people don’t start growing until the 4th or 5th month. When it starts, it grows out at a rate of about 1/2 inch per month. You are hopefully, one of these later bloomers.

Haven’t taken finasteride for a week

I haven’t taken my fin for a week, i’m getting a new script tomorrow. Is 1 week enough time for noticable hair loss? Kinda worried. thanks

One week of no finasteride will have no impact as it stays in your hair follicles for at least a couple of weeks.

What Causes a Maturing Hairline?

Hairlines changing to mature hairlines are still hairloss caused by DHT right? Would propecia help slow or stop the hairline moving back to a mature hairline? I see some people with no recession at all. I want to be one of those people. If propecia doesnt stop a mature hairline, then what besides DHT causes this hairloss?

When baby seals (harp seals) are born, they have a beautiful white insulative coat. As they mature, they lose this coat. It’s in their genes. Likewise, for Caucasians, a maturing hairline in present in 95% of men nd it is in their genes (in part due to DHT). Thus theoretically, a DHT inhibitor like Propecia may halt the maturing hair line. You should note, however, I used the term ‘in part’ which means that there are other factors that may be responsible for the change, not just DHT.

There are few points to consider:

  1. Male pattern baldness is not a maturing hair line. Otherwise it would be called a maturing bald line.
  2. Propecia’s effect is best seen to work on the crown of the head and not the corners or the frontal hairline.

Healthcare Service Stinks Says Stossel – Nothing Like NHI Routine Services Says Dr. Rassman

I could’t help but think about what we do in our practice vs what Stossel talked about in this article. “the hospital’s customer service stinks. Doctors keep me waiting for hours, and no one bothers to call or email to say, “I’m running late.” Few doctors give out their email address. Patients can’t communicate using modern technology”.

Help with Craniotomy Scar?

Hi there,

I’m hoping I can get some guidance on craniotomy scar issue I am having. I am a 27 year old male, and about 6 months ago I had a craniotomy for the removal of a benign tumor which was discovered shortly before the procedure. The surgery went well and all is good now health wise. However, I now have a 6″ long scar that is about 5/16″ wide in the back of my head.

I would now like to address how I can improve the aesthetics of the scar, as I prefer to keep my hair short. The good news is with longer hair (shown in the photo), I am able to cover the scar, but I’d really like to wear my hair shorter. I have visited 2 cranial plastic surgeons and one hair doc in the Bay Area, California. Here is summary of their recommendations on how to improve the scar:

– UCSF plastic suregon: Scar Revision and change scar to a zig zag shape.
– Stanford plastic surgeon: Standard Scar Revision. Advised against doing a zig zag as it would change hair growth directions and “make it look weird”.
– Hair Doc: Standard Scar revision and possibly hair transplant on scar if scar needs additional improvement.

Is it true that changing the scar to a zig zag shape would change the hair directional growth? If that is the case, why would the UCSF surgeon recommend that? Do any of you have any recommendations on the best way to improve aesthetics of the scar? My end goal is to not get rid of the scar completely, but to at least improve the aesthetics of it. I’d appreciate some feedback!

I really cannot give you good, personal medical advice via the internet, so I’d suggest if you’re interested you can see us at our office in San Jose or Los Angeles (the consultation is free). We have transplanted hair into craniotomy scars with very good success. Many of these patients have had scar revisions that failed to resolve the cosmetic issues. You may need more than one transplant depending on the case, the size of the scar, and the location of the scar. Dr. Pak recently performed a FUE/FOX transplant into a craniotomy scar where a zig zag attempt was made. Sometimes a zig zag revision can make the scar worse.

Ask your surgeons for examples with before and after photos. Maybe it will help disguise the scar, but it’s still a scar nevertheless. Hair transplants to the scar does not mean the scar will be removed, but at least there is hair growing “ON” the scar and if there is enough hair in the proper direction, the scar will not easily be seen.

High Hairline in 22 Year Old Man

Dear Doctor Rassman,
I am a healthy 22 year old man. I was born with a naturally receding hairline. It has been with me since I was a kid. I am experiencing no hair loss and I use Revivogen to shampoo. My receding hairline has always bothered me since I can remember and I wanted to know of some remedies to get rid of this hairline that is natural to me. I have been recommended a hair transplant and would like some recomendations from a professional such as yourself.

At only age 22, you can not be sure if the hair loss may come on in the future. By age 30, you can tell by mapping out the hair for miniaturization. For this reason, we generally do not treat high hairlines, but that is a generality and is something that should be worked out with your doctor. I have transplanted the frontal hairlines in actors and male models your age, and would only do so after I had made a diagnosis and developed a Master Plan with them for a worst case scenario. I would consider this non-therapeutic and might consider doing it.
