Female Hair Thinning

Hello sir,
I am an Asian female and I am 24 years old.About 3 years ago, I noticed that my hair had started thinning. That was a period of time when I was under a lot of stress and used to hav a bad diet as well. So I thougt that was the reason for my hairloss and also thought it would come back in time. I have lost hair mostly from the front region of my head.But am not loosing much hair now.My hairloss kind of reduced on its own about few months ago and I also see few hair coming.

So does that mean that I am gonna get back my lost hair? Was the damage irreparable? Should I take treatement?

My mom had lost a lot of hair at a young age,my dad is 60 years old ,but still not bald. Could you please let me know more about my hairloss and whether it will come bacK or not.I would be extremely grateful sir.I am undergoing a lot of pain because of my hair.

You are not alone. Since I started this blog, I have gotten quite a few questions from women about their hair loss problems. Here is a link to the similar questions and answers. The first thing you need to do is to see a physician who can examine you and order tests to make sure that there are no underlying medical reasons for your hair loss. Some of the reasons for female hair loss are: anemia, thyroid disease, connective tissue disease, and various gynecological conditions. These laboratory tests may be useful if underlying medical problems are suspected: CBC, Chem Screen, ANA, T4, TSH, STS, Androstenedione, DHEA-Sulfate, Total and Free Testosterone.

Should my boyfriend go back on fin? Will he get sexual sides if he didn’t get them before?

Posting for my ‘off-the-grid’ boyfriend. He took fin in his mid twenties. It worked great, and he had no sexual sides. He stopped cause he was afraid of cancer. Now that the 2018 follow up study came out, he’s thinking about going back on. Do you think he has less risk of developing sexual sides cause he didn’t before? If he goes on it and has sides, will they disappear when he goes off? Should he go on it?
If he didn’t get sexual side effects before, he will not now.

Female Started Losing Her Hair at 13

i am a 17 year old (almost 18) female and have been experiencing hair loss since i was about 13. i used to have thick curly hair and now its very thin, i have to wear it half up in a clip to keep the thinning spots hidden (even though my whole head is thinning). my father is going bald and his brother and father are completely bald. i do not have any thyroid or hormone problems nor do i have any iron problems. i have been to dermitologists and they perscribed me monoxidil which i used when i was approx. 14 and stopped after about a half a year to a year because i hated using it and my hair loss was not completely noticble. now at 17 its pretty bad and i began using the monoxidil again, i started about a month ago. no one can explain my hair thinning and why a lot of it falls out after i shower and brush it. at first when i was 13-14 i didnt care because it was not noticable, but now i cant take it, im in high school almost uniiveristy and i dont know what to do! its been happening for 5 years without slowing or stopping..is there anything you can offer that will help me? pleasee im desperate, all my friends have thick hair and i hate the fact that i dont and mine falls out and is noticibly thin.

You have done your research concerning female hair loss. Have the dermatologist biopsy your scalp to see if you have an inflammatory process occuring which cause your hair loss. Find out if there are there any miniaturized hairs in the donor area, which is in the back of your head, and how much miniaturization you have everwhere else on your scalp. Are there any noticeble spots on your head? Has your hair loss been stabilized or has it become more progressive? I am limited to what I can do over the internet. Be sure to get a good, caring doctor to help guide you through what you are now experiencing.

Signs of DUPA?

Hi Dr Rassman,

Ive been reading your blog daily for a short while now, and im curious, if you were to look at someone how would you know if they had dupa, what are the symptoms that you would be able to diagnose that with?

Diffuse unpatterned alopecia (DUPA) is a condition where miniaturization is present all over the head, even in the areas that hair transplant surgeons think is sacred (the back and sides of the head). Thinning in the donor area where there was no thinning before, would make me suspicious of DUPA. You should get your hair mapped out for miniaturization and that would clearly give you the diagnosis.

If you read my blog, you know my answer is buyer beware. The website you point to is linked to a sales website. It is operated out of Panama and hosted in Amsterdam.

I highly doubt the article give the viewer a genuine interview. Dr. “A Chan” probably does not exist either. If she does, she probably didn’t give that interview. Thus the initials on the name to give plausible deniability. I’m sure they’ll make their quick buck and disappear into the sea of similar products or possibly re-branded the product under a different name once this sales cycle burns out. If I am wrong, then I would like to see the actual clinical study or have Dr. Chan give me a call and refer to me the “patent” who was the focus of the ‘cure’.

Smoking, Hair Loss and Attractiveness

Hello, I am smoker of 24 years here. I am 37, and I have quit smoking for one month now. I have noticed that my hair is falling out far less and it is thicker and shiny. My skin is full of color as well. When I go out now, lots of ladies check me out and approach me even though I have a receding hair line. The ladies never approached me when I was smoking, probably because having a fag hanging out of your mouth isn’t very becoming. Anyways, smoking is a waste of time and money, and we don’t have a lot of either these days. Quit smoking and free yourself! Be your best self!

Finasteride and hair transplants, is it important to take it?

I get side effects from fin so I can’t take it. I’m 23 and thinking at 25 I’ll get a hair transplant. I was wondering if I’m required to take fin for it to work.

Finasteride protects young men (under 30) from shock loss after a hair transplant. When a young man doesn’t take it, they run a risk if significant shock loss of the native hair. Many surgeons don’t use finasteride with surgery in young men, and these men are writing or calling me all of the time about their shock loss.

SMP vs FUE for Donor Area Scars?

Questions: I haven’t quite yet determined what plan I will do yet. In your honest opinion, to best resolve the wide scar issue, is it better to go with SMP, or perhaps a FUE over the scar, or perhaps a combination of both?

Scars treated with FUE or in fact with any form of hair transplant, does not completely cover the scar area because the density needed is too high to achieve in one session or possibly even two sessions. The scars tend to be white, and the whitish color of the scar seems to always dominate whatever transplant was done. It is easy to do FUE from just above and below the scar, but easy does not mean good. I have done many of these FUE scar procedure, and even after a couple of such procedures, they just don’t really hide the scar. When we started doing Scalpmicropigmentation into the scar, it was clear that this is a better way of dealing with the problem.

Scars themselves, have other problems related to them including hypertrophic scarring (elevated scars) or depressed scars that form a gully (like a lengthy divot) which is never addressed with either SMP or FUE alone, so when this occurs we take still another step by treating the hypertrophic scars appropriately and we use dermal fillers to deal with the gulleys (divots) in the scar which gives us great power in dealing with all of the scar issues. Those who offer SMP and are not doctors, or doctors who are not experts in the treatment of hypertrophic scars or dermal fillers, can not address these other problems.
