Will Nioxin Regrow Hair Lost from Medication?

(female) When hair loss is caused by a medication, in my case Abilify – an antipsychotic I’m using for bipolar disorder – does medication such as nioxin work to prevent the loss or promote growth? I’ve started to notice large amounts of hair loss which began soon after starting Abilify. One of the rare side effects mentioned in Abilify literature is unusual hair thinning, apparently I’m experiencing this rare side effect.

I do not believe that Nioxin will help regrow your hair. Minoxidil might be worth a try, but be sure to read the warnings on the packaging. At this time, minoxidil is the only FDA approved medication for treating female hair loss.

I Cut My Head and Had Stitches — Will Hair Regrow There?

Hi.

I cut the back of my head quite badly a few weeks back. I had stitches put in and now they have been removed. The cut is healing well but the problem is that there are 2 cuts with a gap in between. Currently I have a large-ish bald patch covering the whole area.

My questions are:

A) Will the area between the 2 scars ever grow back the hair

B) Is there anything I can do to encourage the hair to regrow.

Without seeing you, I can not tell you the answers to your question. The scalp frequently scars and the scar can widen. If that is the case, you may end up with a bald area where the scar forms.

Sometimes there is an area around the scar which has temporary hair loss. If that happens, it usually regrows in about 6 months. Best to see a doctor who knows about hair for an examination if you’re concerned.

I Don’t See Any Normal Daily Hair Loss After Taking Propecia

I know it’s normal to lose 100-150 hairs a day. I have MPB and been losing about this much maybe more but I don’t think so. I always saw those clumps in the shower and tons of hairs during styling. But in the end I think they were those 100-150 hairs. I been on Propecia for almost 5 months and for several weeks now I don’t see much hairs during styling and almost nothing at showering. So if it’s normal to lose hairs even without MPB how come I see very little shedding now?

Appreciate your circumstances. You are probably losing hair during the daytime without realizing it… perhaps when the wind blows, when you run your fingers through your hair, scratch your head, etc. It sounds like Propecia is working well to control your hair loss.

Woman Losing Hair Following Recent Move and Job Change

I am a 25 year old female experiencing hair loss. I can tell that my ponytail is about half the thickness it was about 2 months ago. I haven’t noticed any bald spots really, but at the front of my head and can definitely see my scalp and it is a lot thinner. I have had blood work done for thyroid and anemia. Everything came back normal. I attributed it to moving away and starting a new job and just being stressed out, but losing my hair is just making me stress even more.

There is even less hair on my arms, legs, and body. My skin is starting to become itchy, but no rash or dryness. And my hair is less oily. I have gained about 5-10 pounds, but I figure that’s because with my new office job I am less active. I have no history of hair loss in my family, but my dad does have thyriod problems, but that test came back normal. Any ideas on what could be going on?

Stress from your new job and the move could contribute to hair loss, and I realize losing hair in itself can also be stressful — so it seems like a never-ending cycle. That being said, there are many possible reasons for hair loss in women, so it would be difficult to solely place the cause on stress. You can find a partial list of causes here.

Did you just start notice your hair starting to thin during or following the move, or was there some loss going on prior to that when you were under less stressful situations?

I Found a Lump Under My Nipple After Taking Propecia

I was on Propecia for a year after about 9 months I got a lump under my left nipple. I also had to work really hard to get an erection. I stopped taking the drug and all sides went back to normal and I have just become a father so no damage done. I was taking 1 pill per day I would like to start taking the drug again as I was having good results. is it possible for me to lower the dosage and will this reduce the sides. I look forward to hearing from you thank you and keep up the good work

If you have or had breast lumps, this can be a serious issue and you need to have a physical exam. Your doctor needs to be aware of it. If you have erectile dysfunction you need to at least see a doctor to make sure there are no other medical issues such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or other medical conditions that may contribute to the issue. I realize this site is for discussing hair loss issues and Propecia is a medication that may cause the side effects you are describing, but nevertheless you still need to see your doctor about these issues.

I am glad to hear that your side effects all went away. If you want to restart Propecia, talk to your doctor regarding a possible dosage change that may diminish or ameliorate the side effects. Remember that 1/2 of a Propecia (0.5mg finasteride) is considered 70 to 80% as effective as the full 1mg dose in treating genetic MPB.

Woman With Thinning Hair After Family Tragedy

I am a 38 year old African American female. My hair started to thin after a tradgedy in the family. Now I am balding quickly. My hair has taken on a totally different texture. I’ve had the blood work down for my thyroids, which was normal. I have now noticed that I have dark spots on my scalp. What else can I do?

Stress can accelerate what your genes are destined to do. If thinning is in your future (genetically) then losing hair mass with stress can be expected. Reversing such changes is difficult, but Minoxidil has been shown to help in these situations. Learning to manage stress is more important that anyone wants to admit. I Had 3 Procedures — Did I Receive Optimal Care?

Thank you for sharing your time and expertise with the hair loss community. I’ve had three successful transplants with a prominent hair transplant surgeon between the years of 2003-2005. The graph count of all three sessions was approximately 5,200. Lately I’ve noticed hair transplant sites lauding the success of a few doctors who are able to surpass 5,000 graphs in one session. Surely I would have preferred to receive my 5,000 graphs in one session as compared to three. Did I receive optimal care by my physican or did he lack the skill, resources, and know-how to produce the results (5,000 graphs)in one session? Or, are there factors that make it necessary for a person to have three smaller sessions as compared to one larger one? I’m a 48 year old male. Thanks again!

Sometimes large sessions (5000+) may not be possible on some patients when the size of the bald area is small. If the size of the bald area is large, to get a large session you need three things:

  1. good laxity (looseness) of the donor scalp
  2. very good densities in the donor area
  3. a specialized surgical team capable of doing this work in less than 8 hours

You should always have a good, trusting relationship with your doctor. I cannot comment on optimal care and would not suggest that you received less than optimal care. Maybe your surgeon’s team is not capable of performing these large sessions in the ascribed time period. Maybe your scalp is too tight or your balding area is too small. If you describe your surgery to be a success and are pleased with the results, then that is the determinant for the quality you recieved and I would go by the results you obtained when compared to the expectations you had prior to starting the process.

Worried About My Hairline, And I Don’t Have Local Access to a Hair Doctor (with Photos)

Hi,
I would greatly appreciate some feedback regarding my frontal hairline. It appears that my corners have thinned/ receded during the last couple years. I am 23 years old male. I’m concerned about my hair line at the moment and questioning what would be an appropriate approach to take. Would Propecia and Rogaine be a smart idea? I currently live in an area which does not have local access to a physician regarding hair loss, although this is something I’m looking into. Thank you for your time and consideration.

It does appear that you are experiencing early hair loss with a Norwood class 3 pattern showing at this time. There is erosion of the corner hairline with thinning present. At your age, the best treatment would be finasteride (Propecia or the generic form of it) as it would be likely to stop the process. Your family doctor can prescribe finasteride 5mg to you and then you would cut them into quarters and take 1/4 per day.

You have a Norwood Class 3A pattern of balding reflecting significant frontal recession. There is no such thing as a minor hair transplant as you should have put the hair back where it belongs and tackle the transplant the right way so you don’t have to maintain your recession. Any doctor who did a minor hair transplant just made you into a hair transplant addicted person who will have to finish what was started sooner or later because if you lose hair behind the hair transplant you will have an island of transplanted hair, a bald area and then the hair behind it that is yours. Your call of course to finish what you started.
