It’s pretty ridiculous that anyone could label this man with a disorder just because of his truly awful hair. That being said, his helmet of hair really does look bad. I won’t dispute that. It looks like he’s got something to hide…

20 Years Old and Thinking About a Hair Transplant.

I’m basically at Norwood 3 and I don’t want to lose my f***ing youth. Going isn’t an option like for many here since I have moles on my head and can’t grow a beard anyway. I also got depression because of my hairloss, and it’s literally the only thing that bothers me in terms of my body.

However, most information online says you have to be at least 25 to do one. I can’t really wait 25 years and suffer like this. Is it really a bad idea to do it now, and is it even possible? I’ve got around 14k€ saved up, so money shouldn’t be an issue.

It is never a good idea to do a hair transplant at 20 years of age because you don’t know where your balding pattern will end up, and you can use up all of your donor hair before you get to the final pattern. Some bad doctors are unfortunately motivated to make a lot of money by doing more and more grafts on each patient, and that leaves you with possibly nothing left for future hair loss. In the News – Former Hair Model Now Has Alopecia Areata

Like 5 million others in the U.S., Van Cuylenburg suffers from alopecia areata. The disease results in sudden and often unpredictable hair loss on the scalp and often across the rest of the body. It is cyclical in nature and has no known cause or cure.

For the effervescent Van Cuylenburg, it is particularly ironic because she used to be hair model.

Note: The annual meeting of hair surgeons was in held in Alaska this past week. The following review is very selective and is biased by the things that were interesting to me and what I (Dr. Rassman) thought could be interesting to the readers.

What is the role of immunity in the development of androgenic alopecia in women?

    In men and women, it was suggested that there is an immune response in genetic hair loss that could either trigger the process or be an early sign that hair loss is about to start. Dr. Neil Sadick of New York has been following female hair loss for years. He showed his results from scalp biopsies of the scalp in women with hair loss. What he saw were findings that were similar to the conditions found in diseases like lupus (an autoimmune disease). He believes that female pattern hair loss is attributable to immune driven inflammation and he believes that this interferes with hair stem cell activity as they enter into the growth phase of the hair cycle.

    The earliest symptoms of many women and some men start with pain and itching of the scalp, a set of symptoms that reflect the inflammatory response that he believes is always present, but often ignored. He raises the issue that if the connection is correct, the scalp may respond to the use of steroids in the earliest phases of the hair loss process.


 
Double trichophytic closures

    Double trichophytic closures were demonstrated in a poster presentation, suggesting that this procedure can “wipe out” scars from FUE in 99% of patients. I personally doubt this claim. This reflects first time surgery patients only, as these patients are at a lower risk for significant scarring.

In the News – Hair Loss Gene Found?

Researchers in Japan have identified a gene that appears to determine cyclical hair loss in mice and believe it may also be responsible for hair loss, or alopecia, in people.

In a report published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the scientists described how they generated a line of mice that were lacking in the Sox21 gene.

I’m sure there will be much more information announced about this, as hair loss is a billion dollar industry and companies will be trying to figure out ways to use this new find to their advantage. So far though, this has only been shown to be valid in mice and “could” be the case for humans, as well.

I am a 21 year old Asian, can I transplant my hair now? (photo)

What you need is to find a doctor who understands the progressive nature of genetic balding in men. With this much balding at 21, you may be heading for a Class 7 pattern but typically Asians do not have the donor supply to treat such a large area of balding if you should evolve into a Class 7 pattern. What you need is a Master Plan for your hair loss, not a hair transplant at this time. I have just received two emails from different doctors who reported that they had patients your age who reversed their hair loss completely with Minoxidil and Finasteride alone and no hair transplant. One of these two enails reported that his patinet had this reversal last since he was 21 years old, which is 15 years ago. Too many doctor will rush to transplant you because they make a lot of money doing it but they would be leaving you with an incomplete end result, so be careful. Try a combination of medications with the help of a good doctor.

In the News – L’Oreal Invents Liquid To Reawaken Dormant Hair Cells

Scientists at cosmetic company L’Oreal claim to have invented the first product which can actually “reawaken” dormant hair cells and allow them to grow back. It could offer hope to millions affected by male pattern baldness or just the thinning of hair through old age or for medical reasons.

Already demand for the new treatment has seen salons taking thousands of pre-orders even though the recommended three month treatment costs nearly £300.

After 90 days researchers claim that the liquid “Kérastase Densifique”, when applied to the roots, can promote the growth of more than 1500 new hairs.

The real question is whether I should buy stock in L’Oreal. The study they cite saw 101 people over 3 months with some regrowth, but I have no idea how many people were actually in the study or why it lasted only 3 months. As more news becomes available we’ll look into it further.

22 year old received 3500 FUE grafts in the frontal one inch of his hairline (photo)

In the US, this type of surgery would be considered malpractice. You have almost certainly used more than half of your donor hair for the recipient area that was transplanted, so if you lose more hair behind this, you may not have enough hair left to follow the hair loss behind the transplanted area. You must recognize that hair loss is generally a progressive process and you need to have a Master Plan to account for the progressive nature of your hairloss. I hope that you don’t bald further but if you do, find an honorable doctor who understands such situations and will work with you with a high standard of care and management. Most young men are limited to between 5000-7000 FUE grafts during their lifetime unless their donor density is very high.

In the News – Pain Relievers Linked to Erectile Dysfunction

Of those who took painkillers regularly, 64 percent said they could never get an erection, compared with 36 percent who did not routinely take NSAIDs.

After accounting for factors like age, weight, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease, the researchers still found a 38-percent higher risk of ED among men taking painkillers.

The study, published in Journal of Urology, looked at nearly 81,000 men aged 45-69 and found that of those that took aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and similar NSAIDs, there was significant risk of developing erectile dysfunction.

24 year man old wants a hair transplant at all costs (social and $$)

The hair loss behind what is still a strong hairline. In some Indian men, these strong hairlines can persist for many years even if the hair behind it goes. His pattern from other photos not shown here, is almost certainly going to develop into a Class 6 pattern so I told him to postpone surgery at this time. He should try the drug Finpecia (available in India) as this drug might reverse the hair loss especially when used in conjunction with minoxidil.

Too many young men want to rush hair transplants and too many doctors are happy to take their money and do it; however, hair transplants done too early, may leave the man with a balding pattern that the doctor and the patient never planned for (and that would be bad for the patient but the doctor has already pocked the money and I am sure it cleared his bank account)
