Antiandrogens may protect against covid

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32977363/

“Anti-androgens commonly used in the treatment of AGA such as finasteride, dutasteride, spironolactone, and bicalutamide could improve outcomes among men infected by SARS?CoV?2.”

We have known that men do worse than women when contracting Covid, with higher death rates. So this may help us understand the role of androgens in Covid

Man follows his hair transplant progress over a year (video) from Reddit

It is wonderful when someone allows us to watch the progress of

their hair transplant and take the time to do it with such intention to detail.

The hair transplant changed his look!

I took a picture every day after my Hair Transplant last year, I compiled the footage in a time lapse video. If someone wishes to see how my transplanted hair grew in a year. Here’s my head 🙂 from tressless

Any Point in Taking 5mg Finasteride to Treat Hair Loss?

Dear Doctor,

I just wanted to know if there is any point of taking 5mg proscar for hairloss? From my research I think the answer is no but I have taken 5mg for last 6 weeks. I have noticed a lack of motivation and being a bit down but I am not exactly sure if they are related to taking the 5mg or due to other things in my life. Could there be any side effects for taking for the 5mg for the past 6 weeks? If I just cut down to the quarter Proscar tablet (1.25mg) will my body take long to readjust after having taking 5mg dosage?

Thanks you for your time,

Kind regards

There is no point in taking finasteride 5mg (Proscar) for treating hair loss. Aside from the increased side effect possibility, it will not work any better for hair loss. I really cannot comment on your lack of motivation and its relation to the medication. Maybe you have the holiday blues? Side effects from medications should generally reverse in about a week or two.

How many grafts do I need? (photo)

I just met with a doctor who recommended 3500 grafts. Do you think that this is appropriate?

No, doctors who recommend that number of grafts have an eye on your wallet not your hair. This should take no more than 1500-1800 grafts depending upon the thickness of your hair. This is half of the number you were recommended.

Appreciation

Yesterday I had a visitor from Saudi Arabia, a well known woman who is actively involved in the womens’ rights movement. She was sent to see me for thinning hair by a former patient I did some 10 years earlier. She came with a message for me, “Tell Dr. Rassman that for the past 10 years, I have been enjoying the hair that he gave me more than I would have ever expected”.

This message epitomizes what I experience every day, a sense of worth communicated by heartfelt patient appreciation.

Massive infection from a hair transplant performed in Turkey (photo)

I suspect that this man may have had this surgery performed in a less than clean clinic with unskilled people who may not have been doctors and didn’t understand sterility as a concept. I don’t know the outcome but as a doctor in Europe sent on this photo, I suspect that this man will be treated properly now. This photo should be a warning to those in my readership who shop for bargain hair transplants in Turkey (there are good doctors in Turkey but they don’t charge $1/graft or less). This, regardless of the price this man paid for his bargain hair transplant, it will be a most expensive hair transplant to get him back to where he needs to be. His looks and his health are on the line.

The red you see is blood draining from green and yellow pus pockets. This man has many ‘boils’ or infected cysts possibly starting from a hair graft. Each one of these need to have a surgeon drain them. Once they are all drained and the bacteria cultured, the patient will be put on antibiotics and as new infected cysts appear, they will be drained again. Eventually good surgical draining and antibiotics will calm this down. He will have some scarring left and most of the hair grafts will probably die. Once he is recovered, a good surgeon will reassess his donor supply and hopefully he might have enough donor hair to redo the transplant. This process from infection to a new hair transplant could take up to a year.

Mature Hairline, Is That What I Have?

I followed your advice, “The way you find out if you have hairline recession or have a mature hairline is lift your eyebrows high so that the forehead creases. The mature hairline is found one finger breadth above the highest crease.”

When I did this, my hairline touched the highest crease. What does that mean?

That means that you still have your juvenile hair line, and you are not receding. That is good news for this point in time. The hair line in most Caucasian men becomes mature somewhere between 18-29 years of age.

Are there immoral doctors who do terrible hair transplant work out there? What to do about it!

Dr. Rassman, I implore you to avoid making slanderous comments about another physician’s character online. Go ahead and criticize the result – but calling a physician ‘immoral’ is unprofessional, at best.

I have been outspoken for many years, at meetings and in written comments, even in published materials. Many years ago, I was heavily criticized when I told hundreds of doctor at a meeting about a surgery that was commonly done that I though was inappropriate and deforming. The result of those comments resulted in almost all of the doctors in litigious countries, to stop doing this particular surgery. Donald Trump was a victim of that surgery and from what I heard through medical channels, he was very, very angry with his results and lives with those results today (as everyone can see).

Some doctors must be held accountable and when a person comes to see me and they tell me their ‘horror story’ I do my best to make sure others are aware of their story so that the few rotten applies in our profession will learn that they can be held accountable. I called this doctor immoral because he lied to the patient, promised something he didn’t deliver (a partly failed transplant) and significantly overcharged him. Like any other trade or profession, not everyone behaves morally. When they cause harm, there is always the court system to protect the innocent. I have occasionally volunteered as an expert witness in such cases. As you should note, I did not name the doctor involved.

Medical Causes of Miniaturized Hair?

in regards to low testosterone and low lh question that was answered…..

Are other medical causes that would contribute to hair miniaturization other than DHT/aga?

Male pattern baldness is not the only cause of miniaturization, which could be seen in many other conditions, such as Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA). Most of the cases of miniaturization are chronic conditions with gradual thinning of the hair. In more acute balding conditions, such as stress related hair loss, fungal infections, or alopecia areata, you may not see any miniaturization.
