Results After a Single Session (with Photos)

This patient was thrilled with the results of a single procedure of 1427 grafts done just over two years ago. His hair is lush and he can now show it off the way he wanted to. Click the photos to enlarge.

Does Rogaine Lower Sperm Quality?

My fiance and I are planning on trying to start a family in a few months (after the wedding). I’ve read in some places that Rogaine can lower sperm quality or affect an unborn fetus somehow, but I can’t find it anywhere that looks official. Is there any truth to this? If I do stop using it, will a large portion of my hair fall out within weeks? I’ve never gone more than a day without using it.

I’ve been on Rogaine for about three years now and it appears to have slowed my hair loss. If the choice is between keeping my hair and the health of my unborn child, obviously I’ll pick the latter. But I’d rather not have to choose. Thank you!

Rogaine (minoxidil) should have no effect on your sperm, nor have I have read anything supporting what you read about it affecting the fetus. Of course, if you’re concerned you should talk to your doctor.

Perhaps you’re confusing it with Propecia (finasteride), which has rare side effects related to ejaculate and fertility (but not change sperm count).

Does the ‘Cold Cap’ prevent hair loss in chemotherapy?

I have prescribed it for a number of family members. It is a cooling head system that keeps the blood circulation to the scalp low during chemotherapy. On the three family member I recommended using it, none of them lost all of their hair although there was some thinning on one woman with Breast Cancer Chemo, but unlike many of her friends, she kept almost all of her hair for the entire chemotherapy period. (see: https://baldingblog.com/cold-cap-is-now-fda-cleared-to-hold-on-to-ones-hair-during-chemotherapy/ and see other links: https://baldingblog.com/?s=cold+cap ). Psychologically it is a Godsend for women with breast cancer not to be reminded of their disease every time they look in the mirror and see a bald woman.

Ringworm and Hair Loss

Do I have Ringworm, that is scarry? Where are the worms? I looked very carefully for them and did not see them. Are they like earthworms? Here is a picture of what my doctor called Ringworms as the cause of my hair loss.

Ringworm is a terrible term and I apologize for the medical profession’s use of it. A better term is tinea capitis and it is not a worm at all, but rather it is a fungal infection of the skin. For more info on this, please read:

This is one cause of localized hair loss that is relatively easy to treat and diagnosis is easy in the hands of a good family practice doctor or dermatologist.

Here’s a photo of what tinea capitis (better known as ringworm) infection looks like on the scalp:

Doesn’t 0.25mg of Finasteride Reduce DHT at the Same Rate as 1mg?

i have read the finasteride studies for alopecia. in the pre-clinical study, 0.25mg of finasteride was shown to reduce DHT at the same rate as 1mg. when the clinical studies were done, the dosage used was 1mg. less than that was never looked at with regard to actual clinical outcome. what is your opinion on extrapolating this info to clinically use 0.25mg per day? the purpose of this would be to get efficacy and reduce potential longer term complications. thanks.

I spoke with Dr. David Whiting, an expert on Propecia, some time ago and he informed me that finasteride 1mg and greater has equal value. A dose of 0.5mg is 80 percent as effective and a dose of 0.25 is less effective again. There is value at the lower dose, but if there are no side effects, taking less than the best optimal dose has no basis.

I’ve answered a similar question here — 0.2mg of Finasteride is Almost As Effective as 1mg?

Rogaine Foam on the Temples Has Caused Shedding All Over My Scalp

I am a 21 year old male who has recently (6 weeks ago) started using Rogaine foam. I had noticed the hair at my temples thinning but the hair elsewhere on my head I was happy with- it has been the same thickness (I THINK) since I was 16.

I have a couple quick questions which I would be extremely grateful that you answered to put my mind at ease!

Firstly, will 5% minoxidil foam help this type of balding? I have only been applying the foam to my temple area. Secondly, since starting the treatment, my hair has been shedding more ALL OVER. This has lasted the whole 6 weeks (getting slightly better now). I have noticed this is said to be a good sign but should the shedding last this long and is it normal for the minoxidil to affect the hair I haven’t applied it too? Finally, the texture of my hair has changed all over since beginning treatment, feeling more dry and lifeless. Is this normal or should I be worried?

Thank You!

Rogaine FoamRogaine Foam is meant for use on the top, crown, or vertex area of the scalp. It is not likely to work on the front temples. I realize many people apply the foam to the front areas, but it will have minimal effect (if any).

Rogaine should not cause hair loss or shedding of hair all over the scalp, though it may cause some initial shedding in the first month, as I have heard some people mention this phenomenon. With continued use it should grow back.

I am not aware of changes in texture of hair being a common side effect, though I suppose the alcohol in the treatment could be the culprit.

Why is my donor area red and without regrowth?

I would have to (1) know how many grafts you had taken and (2) see your same picture in another 3 months with the same hair cut. That will tell me if it is an over-harvested donor area. I would hope that the redness would be gone in a week or two.

Rubber Bands Caused Scalp Bumps?

Hi doctor,
I am a 19 year old male who had really long hair a year ago. I use to tie my hair in a bun with lots of rubber bands. The rubber bands were pushed really hard against my scalp and my scalped from a bruise/bump. The bruise was red, painful, itchy, and bumpy. I pushed down on the bump with my thumb to make it flat and applied Neosporin. The swelling went away but the hair loss remains till this day. My dermatologist recommended rogaine foam but i have seen little progress(5 months in.)My doctor does not recommend cortisone injections.

Rubber bandYou were not doing yourself justice with making tight rubber bands pull on your scalp. This can cause traction alopecia. In your case though, I can’t tell you what is going on with your scalp without seeing you directly.

Are you balding all elsewhere or just one hairless spot? Are there local areas that are missing hair? I can keep asking questions, but without even a picture, I am helpless.

You may wish to see another dermatologist if you don’t feel you were given adequate time or treatment. Or go back and ask your dermatologist for a follow-up.

Dosing oral minoxidil

Is there a known correlation between patient size, weight, height and appropriate oral min dosage or does it vary regardless you think?

I am not familiar with weight or height considerations for oral minoxidil. A dosage between 1.25 and 2.5 mgs daily is the correct dose with the least potential cardiovascular side effects
