Probably no, is the answer. Some people use topical minoxidil, which might increase the value or value in producing hair, but that is just an educated guess on my part.

Hi Dr. Rassman,
I was wondering if it would be possible for you to write me a prescription for Proscar which I can cut into 4 pieces. If not, do you know a physician who will? Also, is there a good method for cutting it evenly? Thank you.
Yes, I can write a Proscar precription for you, but you will have to come into the office for a check-up and diagnosis. Since you indicated you are in the Orange County area, you’re not too far from my Los Angeles office. You can use a pill cutter to cut the pill into 4 or 5 parts. These are sold in every pharmacy for a dollar or two.
Hello Dr. Rassman, I was just curious if you’ve ever come upon this web site: mypropeciasideeffects.com. This guy doesn’t seem real pleased with his Propecia experience. I’m not sure if he’s got an agenda or if he’s just a worst case scenerio. Any legitimacy to his claims?
Thank-you for your time
Not everyone will be happy with every choice they make. Propecia is an elective medication to treat a cosmetic issue. If someone is concerned about the possible risks from the medication, simply don’t take it. The fact is, I’ve yet to see a good clinical study that shows any side effect is permanent and studies have shown the side effects are seen in less than 2% of men. I have no idea if he’s got an agenda, but I’ve written about this issue many times before:
I know honest doctors who use PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma injections). Many of these doctors are unimpressed, so they may be doing it because patients want it. There is considerable hype on the internet that this procedure does wonder for hair loss. We’ve heard “universally good results” and “very effective in my hands” comments from doctors doing PRP. However, PRP has no standardization, and it has been around for more than 25 years without any absolute proof such as a clinically valid ‘Double-Blind Study’ with objective measurements of the results. What we hear among many of the doctors offering it are glowing comments, and some even say “I’ve seen a tiny handful of impressive visual results,” but is this really true? Most good results occur when PRP is used in combination with Finasteride, Minoxidil, etc., which is an important variable, scientifically, and something to keep in mind if you are considering PRP.

Hi,
I’ve written before and have another question. Do you think within the next ten years there will be a new hair loss drug that supplants Propecia as the go-to non-surgical option, or is FDA approved Dutasteride (for hair loss) the only new, clinically proven product you see on the horizon?
Thanks
Dutasteride (marketed as Avodart) is being used by many men, prescribed by some doctors to treat hair loss despite the absence of FDA clearance. In the phase 3 dutasteride study done in Korea, there was no mention of sperm or sterility. This is a concern to me, and I do not believe that this drug will be approved for treating hair loss until issues like that are studied further. That’s my opinion, and I’m sure I’ll get plenty of emails from people telling me how I’m wrong or I’m narrow minded about this medication. Ultimately, going to market is in the hands of the drug company that manufactures it. I am reluctant to prescribe dutasteride, because without clinical clearance from the FDA, I do not know the risk of sterility for those taking the drug for their MPB treatment.
As for other new hair loss drugs… I am not familiar with anything in the short term pipeline of 5 years, so it seems 10 years may be enough for us to hope and short enough for us to wait. Propecia should be off patent in the 1mg finasteride dosage in the US in a few years, so once generics are available in local pharmacies I’d imagine it would cut into their profits. I’m sure the drug companies will want to have a newer product out before then to keep their shareholders happy.
This is a very impressive study on 76 men which took place over 24 weeks and got substantial growth. Mean hair count increases of 40% were observed in PSO-treated men at ‘just’ 24 weeks, whereas increases of 10% were observed in placebo-treated men (P < 0.001). Adverse effects were not different in the two groups. I think that this is worth a try for many men thinking about doing something simple and inexpensive for treating their hair loss.

I read this article, and it only addressed mouse studies. It is a long way from here to human use.
I have a questions about finasteride. Is it something I could add to help with my balding? I already take 100mg of spironolactone daily. I have gone on/off spiro afew times d/t having kids but now haver had a hysterectomy so do not have to worry about any teratogenic concerns.
Finasteride has been shown to work on some women but because of its unpredictable action, most doctors don’t prescribe it for women. It works better when women have gone through menopause. For women who can have children, as you seem to understand, the impact on the baby in pregnancy can produce abnormal sex differentiation.
Hello, I have alopecia and i lose my hair and eyebrows. Also I am losing my body hair. My dermatologist told me to try protopic once a day. Some scattered white hair in my head is growing. Also told me to take rogaine pills. I didn’t start this yet. What do you suggest for me. I really need your advice.
Protopic is a prescription medication which you can read about at Drugs.com. This medication can be dangerous and must be prescribed by doctors who are experienced in its use. Some cancers can be induced at the skin level by this drug. For our readers, you should know that this is not a medication to get for treating hair loss.
I believe you’re describing alopecia totalis (see NAAF), but it is not really clear where you are in the disease progression. Also, your doctor likely mentioned Rogaine (minoxidil) topical — not pills. Do not take minoxidil pills to treat hair loss.
Greetings,
I just learned that my husband had been diagnosed as a child with cancer in one of his testicles. He underwent radiation and had lost hair on his head. Could this radiation have caused some permanent hair loss on his head? He is bald at the crown.
Thank you for you time
It is not clear if he received radiation to the head. Assuming that his radiation was more in the groin, then I doubt that it is producing hair loss. He needs to get a working diagnosis with mapping of his scalp for miniaturization. Treating the balding crown has some good solutions for him but first he needs to get a working diagnosis.
