Do I apply minoxidil twice a day, really!

I’m planning to start minoxidil but not sure if I can manage applying it twice a day. I can apply it in the morning but my schedule is random everyday. Most days I don’t get home till around midnight so if I have to apply it then I’d have to wait till 2-4 hrs before I can sleep.

Once a day at night is fine. I recommend that you take a hot shower and then apply it before bedtime. The heat will open the porse in the scalp and increase the circulation so that more of the minoxidil will be absorbed.

Does Massage Help Bring Back the Hair?

I’m 28, hair thinning. I notice my scalp is often really sore for no reason. It feels better if I rub it. Does this have anything to do with my bald spot? Does anyone actually know?

There are folks that sell massages for three times a week for hair loss. They often put on some oils under the guise that it works. I have seen young men pay as much as $500/month for such treatments. They actually may harm you because massages can pull out weak, miniaturized hairs. Even harsh hair brushing can do this.

Are Drug Companies Making a Better Finasteride?

Hey Dr Rassman
First of all I would just like to recognize all the the individuals who help make this site what it is. Its great. I love it! To be honest it distracts me at school a lot. I keep saying to myself, okay read one more post and thats it! But now for the serious part. I’m just wondering about the progress which is being made in the development of new drugs for male pattern baldness. I know you are probably getting sick of these questions, but are companies researching the working mechanisms of the approved drugs minoxidil and finasteride and building off what they already know?

Also, who is the youngest person that you have performed surgery on, not including young children with burns, but with male pattern balding and if so what do these results look like? I am also pleased to say that I will be scheduling a visit with you in May to meet with you….. I’m very excited as I am from Canada and have never been to LA before. I hope it lives up to the hype!

I don’t know much about new drugs in the drug pipeline of the pharmaceutical companies, but as I do find out anything I try to post it on this site quickly. Sometimes I get emails from people alerting me to medications in the pipeline that I hadn’t heard of before. Contrary to popular belief, I’m not a drug insider that knows timelines on when medications are coming to market. Treating hair loss is a billion dollar business, so while I don’t know this to be 100% the case, it would make sense that some drug companies are working on the next possible medication to regrow hair.

In the treatment of male pattern baldness, I made a mistake once by taking on a 17 year old patient with strictly frontal balding. He had a very fast moving hair loss progression and eventually went on to a Norwood class 7 pattern. This was around 1993, years before Propecia was on the market and it was early in my hair career. Today, I generally wait for:

  1. Advanced pattern progression that does not respond to Propecia
  2. Ages of 22 or higher
  3. Adequate or high densities of the donor hair
  4. Maturity… and many other characteristics tied to hair and skin color, hair density, coarseness of the hair, character of the hair, and family history

I look forward to meeting with you. Los Angeles is a great city and I am sure you will enjoy it if you gave yourself enough time for touring.

Does Masturbation Increase The Speed Of Hair Loss In Genetically Prone Men

Doctor Rassman I have a question. I apologize before hand if the question is inappropriate, but a lot of people online say sexual activity, and masturbation causes hairloss in those with the genes with hairloss. Im not sure if this is true, but I have read masturbation increases prolactin levels and prolactin tends to increase DHT. I know sex and masturbation doesn’t cause hairloss by itself or else every male out there would be bald, but can it cause the hairloss to speed up in those with the Genes for hairloss? I would really appreciate your input on the matter. I might be wrong.

I rephrased your question in the title of this post. With regard to any association between Masturbation and hair loss, which men would want to give up their sex lives to slow down a hair loss process that is going to happen anyway? We have talked in previous posts that the genetically impacted hairs for hair loss, just die out (apoptosis) when their time comes. It is clearly associated with age, modified by the drug finasteride. I can’t say one way or the other that sex (which ever way you have it), will increase the speed of the hair loss, as I believe that is the crux of your question.

You need want to stop masturbating and see if this helps with the hair. Let us know how that goes, or you can search your topic from our previous posts

Are Sideburn Transplants Done?

I have lived my whole life without sideburns as I have never been able to grow them. Are sideburn transplants an option? Are they at all common where a doctor would be comfortable doing one? I would also be interested to know if you’ve done any and if there were any problems.

Thanks.

Also, any photos you have of clients before and after a sideburn transplant would be appreciated.

Yes, sideburn transplants are commonly done by experienced hair transplant surgeons. We actually do this procedure on more women than men, because many women who have facelifts lose their sideburns and often have scars that need to be hidden with the transplants.

You can see some excellent photos in our hair restoration gallery.

(It should go without saying, but the photo at right of Elvis Presley is meant to show sideburns, not to suggest that he had transplants.)

This article certainly put the notion that finasteride may prevent prostate cancer into question. Worth reading from a famous medical institution.

Merck’s Propecia Patent Only Applies to the Process?

Hi from England.

It was mentioned on this blog that no reputable company would infringe on the patent Merck has for 1mg finasteride. However, this is irrelevant because if the drug is made abroad (e.g. by Cipla in India)the patent only applies to the process used to make the drug.

1mg Finasteride is 1mg Finasteride. Truth be told, Merck are ripping people off, and all for a brand name. I’m currently taking a reputable “generic” and my hair is improving after 5 months. Ah the wonders of the free global market.

Like I said, 1mg Finasteride is 1mg Finasteride.

I allowed the comments about Merck, because they reflect a view that may or may not be correct. Patents generally extend to the markets where the patented products are sold. I can not comment on the finasteride patent, for I don’t have an answer for you. As representatives from Merck do read this blog regularly, maybe someone from within the company would send me an email and I would either post it or reflect upon the content in it without posting the full communication.

I am not a lawyer and would have to review all of their documents in detail to render a layman’s opinion, something that will not add value to you or your question.
